The present invention relates to manifolding apparatus for typewriters, calculating machines and other such writing apparatus and. comprises carbon shifting means for employing the same sheets of carbon tissue several times, said carbon paper being interleaved between continuous strips of papen.
It is known in connectionwitn such apparatus to place: the copying material on a holder, which can be displaced up and down within a frame to and from the platen roll carriage of the writing machine. The carbon holder in such apparatus is; generally connected by ribbons to a spring actuated roll supported by theframe so that said roll is placed: under spring tension when the car bon holder is moved towards the: platen roll of the writing apparatus. During the writing operation the carbon tissues are interleaved with. the lengths of. paper and kept in place by rules, the ends of which protrude between the sides; of the paper strips. One object of the present invention is to provide a typewriter manifolding device. having a frame connected with the platen roller carriage: and a carbon tissue. holder slidablys mounted on said frame for movement: to and fromthe platen roller and a: power accumulating device con-- nected with said holder soas to accumulate power when the: holder is moved toward. the: platen roller and. deliver itagain during the oppositely directed movement of the holder in which thepull of the power accumulating device on the. holder will not tend to displace. the carbon sheets relative to the strips. of paper contacting; the platen roll.
A further object of. the invention is to provide: a typewriter'manifolding; device: of: the said kind; the manipulation. of which is: very simple. and requires aminimumof t'ediousmovements by the operator.

The roller 18- is rotatably mounted upon a shait fixed to the two sides 1 of the manifolding device which are again fixed to the frame 6. On the shaft 20 is also rotatably mounted one or two drums 2| having contact pins 22 engaging with a perforated ribbon 23 connected with the end II of the carbon tissue holder and with a weight 24 and passing over each of the drums. The ribbon 23, weight 24 and drums 2| form a power accumulating device in which power is accumulated when the holder|| is moved toward the platen roll and delivered again when the holder I I is moved in the opposite direction.
Between the drum or drums 2| and. the roller I8 there is a releasable clutch which can be constructed in any known way one of these being shown in section in Fig. 3.
Referring to Fig. 3, 20 is a shaft which is supported in the side plates 1 so that it can rotate therein. The shaft is in two pieces interconnected by a slot and pin so that they cannot move relative to each other except in a longitudinal direction. The two parts are separated by a spring 25. One of the drums 2| is fixed upon the shaft 20 whereas the other 2| is'placed so that it can slide along the shaft but cannot rotate relative to it. In the end of the roller l8 adjacent to the drum 2| there is a recess 26 closed by a plate 28. In the closed space thus produced there is placed upon the shaft 20 a nut 21. The
end of one of the parts constituting the shaft 20 protrudes through the side plate 1 and against the protruding part rests a hand lever 29. By pressing the lever 29 the two portions of the shaft 20 will be compressed against each other and the nut 21 will be moved away from the plate 28 so that the roller I 8 will not be pressed against the drum 2|. When the lever 29 is released, on the contrary, the two parts of the shaft 20 will be moved away from each other by the spring and the nut 21 will press against the plate 28 and thereby press the roller l8 against the drum 2| so that the roller must follow the drum.
The'manifolding device is used in the following manner:
When filling in aform the lever 29 is left untouched and when the typewriter pulls the paper strips forward the paper strip which is in contact with the platen roll will carry with it the roller l8 which is bound to rotate together with both of the drums 2| and 2|. then move the ribbons 23 and the weight 24, at the same time lowering the carbon holder so that the carbon paper will not be subject to any pulls from the weight 24. When the form has been filled in the paper is moved by turning the platen "roll of the typewriter and since the lever 29 has not yet been operated the drums 2| and 2| and ribbons 23 will follow and take with them the holder H and the carbon paper. The power accumulatedby lifting the weight 24 will now be liberated and will aid in keeping the paper stretched out during the backward movement. When the holder reaches the stop 30 placed in the upper part of the frame 3 it will be retained and the operator will know that this position is These drums will so adjusted that the lower ends of the carbon sheets are free from the platen roll. The lever 29 is then operated to compress the two portions of the shaft 20 and accordingly the paper can be moved forward without moving at the same time the holder 'II and the carbon sheets. The holder during the forward movement of the paper strips will be held tightly against the stop 30 by the weight 24. When a new form has come into position the completed form is torn oil, the

Referring now to Figs. 4 and 5,'|i is a frame with a guide I!) and one of the side plates 1 fastened thereto. 15 and it are two of the paper strips and [4 a carbon tissue carried by a rule l3 suspended on a pin |2 fastened to a holder II. In this case the holder II is, however, connected by a string or tape 3| to a roller 32 positioned in front of the paper on a shaft 2|! placed in a fixed position in the side plate 1. The roller 32 is rotatable on the shaft 20 but connected with it by means of a spring 33 so that the roller, spring and shaft constitute a power accumulating device in which power will be accumulated when the holder H is moved forward pulling the string or tape 3| and power will be given off when the holder is moved backward. 34 is a rod over which the paper strips are passing. The rod 34 is fixed into the side plate 1. Behind the roller 32 another roller 38 is rotatable on a shaft 3! (Fig. 5) mounted on the lever 33 fixed upon a pin 42 or a shaft reaching from one side plate 1 to the other and passing through journals in the side plates. On the pin or shaft 42 a hand lever 35 on the outside of the plate 7 is fixed. The lever 36 is connected with the side plate by a spring 43 tending to keep the shaft 31 and roller 38 against the roller 32. The pressure between the two rollers 32 and 38 can be released by depressing the lever 35. The two-armed lever 39 having on at least one end a stop 4| and mounted upon a pin 40 in the side {plate is connected by one of its arms with the lever 36 so that the stop 4| will protrude through an opening 42a in the frame 6 when the operating lever 35 is depressed.
The roller 32 has a milled surface or is covered by some friction giving material, e. g. rubber. When the roller 38 is pressed against the paper engaging the roller 32 the latter will be in frictional engagement with the paper strip I5, 1. e. the one in contact with the platen roll of the typewriter. When the pressure between the rollers 38 and 32 is released the roller 32 will not engage the paper strip I5 frictionally even if it may rest loosely against its surface.
On operating the embodiment of the invention illustrated in- Figs. 4 and 5 the lever 35 will normally not be depressed and the rollers 32 and 38 will press against each other with the paper strips between them. When the paper l5 and Hi during the filling in of the form is advanced through the typewriter the roller 32 will follow the paper strip [5 and the holder suspended on the string or tape 3| will descend at' the same rate as the paper. When the form has been completed the paper is rolled back, whereby the spring 33 will return and pull the paper so that it is kept stretched. By means of the string or tape 3| the holder II also will be raised as the paper is rolled backwards. At last the holder II will reach the stop 3|? placed in the upper part of the frame and then the carbon tissues must be free of the platen roll for which purpose the length of the carbon sheets must be adjusted in accordance with the position of th stop 3|). The lever 35 is then depressed, whereby the roller 38 moves away from the rol1er32 and the paper will be free. The paper is now advanced. If the carbon sheets show any tendency to follow the paper, which at the first moment may be the case, the stop 4| protruding through the hole 42a as long as the lever 35 is depressed will prevent the holder from any substantial movement and'the paper will then easily be capable of making itself free from the carbon tissues. When the new form has come into position and the completed form has been removed the lever 35 is released whereby the roller 32 and will once more be compressed and the stop t! will disappear behind the frame t through the opening did. When the paper is now advanced the roller 32 will follow it and so will the holder H and the carbon tissues.
While the invention has been illustrated and described in its preferred form it is to be understood that it is not to be limited to the particular constructions in which it is shown and that it may be carried out in other forms without departing from the scope of the claims.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is:
1. In a typewriter manifolding device having a frame for mounting on the platen roll carriage of a typewriter a transfer sheet holder slidably mounted on said frame for movement to and from the platen roll and a power accumulating device connected with said holder so as to accumulate power when the holder is moved toward the platen roll and deliver it again during the oppositely directed movement of the holder, a rotary member for engaging directly by friction that strip of the paper which in its further movement will directly contact the platen roll, means for transferring power from said rotary member to the power ac-- cumulating device during movement of the paper toward the platen roil, means for providing friction involving pressure for said strip with respect to said rotary member, and means for releasing the friction involving pressure between the strip and the rotary member.
2. In a typewriter manifolding device having a frame for mounting on the platen roll carriage of a typewriter, a transfer sheet holder slidably mounted on said frame for movement to and from the platen roll and a power accumulating device connected with said holder so as to accumulate power when the holder is moved toward the platen roll and deliver it again during the oppositely directed movement of the holder, a rotary member, a roller for pressing against said rotary member at least that strip of paper which in it further movement will directly contact the platen roll, and a shaft on which said roller is mounted, said shaft being movable to such a degree that the friction between said strip of paper and said 6 rotary member ceases, said rotary member being rigidly connected with said power accumulating device.
3. A manifolding apparatus for use with a type writer having a platen roll carriage, comprising a frame for mounting on said carriage, a transfer sheet carrier mounted upon said frame for reciprocatory motion thereon, means for storing energy connected to said carrier for accumulating energy during movement of the carrier toward said platen roll and for releasing the energy thus acquired during the car ier movement away from the platen roll, a first rotary member disposed on the end of said frame r mote from said platen roll for engaging directly by friction that one paper strip which in it further movement will directly contact the platen roll, means operatively linking said rotary member and said energy storing means, means including a second rotary mem ber disposed adjacent first rotary member for releasably pressing at l ast said one paper strip toward said first rotary member, normally inoperative means for releasing said last named means from its pressing position, and means responsive to said releasing means upon the operation thereof for limiting the movement of said carrier toward the platen roll.
4. Apparatus according to claim 3, wherein said releasing means comprises a first lever for moving said second rotary member, and said movement limiting means comprises a second lever having a movement limiting projection and a mechanical linkage to said first lever, said proiection being disposed in the path or movement of said carrier upon operation of said releasing means.
