SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 253,197, dated February 7, 1882. Application filed July1,1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, FREDERICK FOSHAY, a subject of Great Britain, residing at Beaver Falls, in the county of Beaver and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in File-Outting Machines; and 1 do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to an improvementin file-cutting machines; and itconsists, first, in the combination, with the hammer, cutter-box, and cutter, of the pivoted and yielding holder adapted to press against the frontside and long bevel of the cutter, thus holding it in position against the back of the cutter-box by frictional contact therewith; second, in combination with the cutter, holder, and presser havingthe lower and pivoted portion of the cutter-box provided with detachable cutter-supports having less area of surface than the rear face of the cutter,
whereby undue friction is overcome and the cutter held independent of the pivoted portion of the presser; third, in themanner and means for holding the cutter in the cutter-box, all of which will hereinafter more fully appear.
To enable others skilled in the art with which my invention is most nearly connected to make and use it, 1 will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In the accompanyingdrawings, which form part of my specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improvement in file-cutting machines. Fig.2 is a front elevation ot'the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical section at lineyg of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section at line y y of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is an enlarged view of the presser and cutter-box. Figs. 6,7,8, 9, and 10 are detail views.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the frame of the machine; B, the movingtable for the bed 0 of the file-blank. This bed is semicircular and susceptible of movement in the arc of a circle for adjusting the plane of the file-blank to the cutting-edge of the cutter.
D represents the hammer, which is of ordinary construction, and is operated through the medium of a three-pointed cam, 0. Above the helve of the hammer is placed a gum spring,f, the pressure of which is regulated through the medium of auadjusting-screw, g.
The presser h and cutter-box iare of similar construction to that described and shown in the English PatentNo. 2,990, granted to James Dodgein 1867, excepting that the forward edge of the pivoted partj ofthe presser his beveled backward, as shown in Figs. 3 and 10, so that the lower ends of the pieces l0, secured in the cutter-box c, for forming the rest or support for theback of the cutter, may come down close to the lower side ofthe pivoted partjofthe presser.
The presserh is furnished with an adjustingscrew, 0, ofthe ordinary construction, the point of which operates upon the upper side of the pivoted portion j of the presser, as indicated in Figs. 3 and 10. The parts in the cutterbox are constructed of steel and secured in it by means of screws, so that they may be detached for the purpose of repairs.
By the use of the pieces 70, secured in the cutter-box i, as herein described, the back-support for the cutter is not affected by changing the angle of the pivoted partj of the presser, it being independent of the pieces 7c, and therefore not liable to cant the cutter l and canseit to make imperfect teeth.
The cutter Z is provided with a long bevel on the front side and a short bevel on the rear side, and its hammer end is brought to a point, so that the hammer will exert its force on the center or axis of the cutter, thereby causing uniform depth of cut in the file-blank. The cutter is held in the cutter-box l by means of a pivoted holding device, 122, which is pivoted to the end of a spring, a, attached to a pivoted lever, 0, having an arm, 10, which is pressed against by a spring, g, which projects upward from the frame A. r The holding device on is provided with two holding-points, r s, the points pressing against the long bevel of the cutter l and the point r pressing against the cutter above said bevel.
The table B and cam e are operated by driving-gear such as is described in said English patent.
The operation of the machine is as follows: The file-blank is placed upon its bed 0 in the usual manner and the machine put in motion. The hammer, striking upon the upper end of the cutter, causes it to cut a tooth upon the file-blank, and upon the upward movement of the hammer the point 8 of the holding device m, pressing against the long bevel of the cutter I, causes it to rebound just enough to clear the tooth formed by the previous action of the cutter and hammer, and holds it in a fixed position for the next blow of the hammer, when, the blank moving forward, the cutter is in a position for cutting the next tooth; and thus the hammer, cutter, and holdercontinue to act until the cutting of the file-blank is completed.
In removing the cutter from the cutter-box the operator draws back the lever 0, thereby drawing back the pivoted holding device m from the forward face of the cutter, when it can be readily removed.
I wish it distinctly understood that the distinctive feature of my invention consists in having the cutter disconnected from the hammer and having the back-support for the cutter in the cutter-box independent of the pivoted partj of the presser, and in the peculiar mechanism employed for holding the cutterin the cutter-box i, so that the cutter will have a slight upward movement after each stroke of the hammer, whereby an action of the cutter is had similar to that of the cutter in the hand of the operator in cutting files.
Having thus described my improvement, what I claim as of my invention is- 1. In a file-cutting machine, the combination, with the hammer, cutter-box, and the cutters, of the pivoted and yielding holder adapted to engage with the front and long bevel of the cutter to hold it in position in the cutter-box by mere frictional contact, as herein described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a file-cutting machine, the combination, with the cutter, holder, and presser, having the pivoted part j, of the cutter-box provided with detachable cutter-supports having less area of surface than the rear face of the cutter, substantially in the manner herein shown and described.
3. In a file-cutting machine, the combination of the cutter-box i, cutter l, pivoted holder m, springs 10 q, and pivoted lever 0, substantially in the manner herein shown and described.
