My invention relates to improvements in upholstered chairs and covers therefor.
The primary object of the Vinvention is to provide an upholstered chair equipped with a sectional, quickly detachable, covering fastened in place in a manner such that the same is tensioned to lie smooth and `for taking up slack therein with the fasteners readily accessible for unfastening, but invisible from the front or sides of the chair.
Another object lis to provide an upholstered chair equipped as above set forth and in which the covering constitutes the original outer fabric which is removable and replaceable, at will, so that the same may be taken ofi, cleaned and then replaced, or .Stored away while replaced by a different covering.'
Still another object is to provide an upholstered chair equipped as above set forth without rendering the same expensive to manufacture.
Other and subordinate objects, also comprehended by my invention, together with the precise nature of my improvements, and the manifold advantages thereof, will be readily understood when the succeeding description and claims are read with reierence to the drawings accompanying and Vforming part o1 this specincation.
In said drawings:
Figure l is a view in .perspective viewed from the rear and one side of a chair embodying niy improvements and with the back and one arm covering section folded back for clearness of illustration of the chair structure, parts being shown in section,
Figure 2 is a fragmentary view in front elevation drawn 'to an enlarged scale and partly broken away and shown in section,
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view in perspective looking at one side and the front of the chair,
Figure 4 is a view in front elevation with the chair tilted upwardly and rearwardly to show the bottom panel thereof,
Figure 5 is a view in perspective of the back covering section removed,
Figure 6 is a view of the chair in rear elevation with the rear iiap portion of the back covering section folded up over the back and unfastened from the arm covering sections, and,
Figure 7 is a view in perspective of the seat covering section.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, my improvernents have been shown therein as embodied in an upholstered, or stuffed, chair including a back I, a seat 2, side arms 3, all of stuffed construction, and front and rear legs 4, 5, The rear legs 5 are formed by the lower end portions of a pair of rear side uprights one of which is shown at and which form part of the chair frame which further includes coplanar, base, horizontal frame rails, there being a iront base rail "i, a rear base rail 8, and side base rails one of which is shown at 9.V The lower edge ci the back: I is attached to a rear cross bar ii spaced above the rear base rail t. The lower edges of the arms 3 are similarly spaced from the side base rails 9. The purpose of these spaces, designated ii, l2 will presently appear. The back i, at its side edges is free from attachment to the uprights 5. The seat 2 -ts in between Vthe arms 3, and a bottom pane-l I3 is suitably attached to said frame rails i, 8,v 9, The entire chair, with the exception of the legs ll, 5, and the spaces li, I2, is covered with muslin indicated at Eli.
My improved covering will now be described. Covering the back i is the back covering section i5 which, substantially half-way down, that is to the tops of the arms 3, has the form of an envelope as Abest shown in Figure 5 adapted vto be slipped down on the back i and below which is a front ap portion it designed to extend below the seat 2, and a rear Aiap portion il designed to extend down to and slightly below the rear base rail 3. Elastic straps I3 are suitably iastened to the lower edge o1" the front flap portion i5 of said section i5. The elastic straps I8 are extended rearwardly into the space ii and secured by snap fasteners iii to a bar 'it suitably secured on top of the rear base rail t. The side edges of the front ap portion i@ are in-cut, as at 2i, and provided with extension wings i2 sewed on, as'at 23, and having side edge elastic straps 2li. The wings 22 are extended` rearwardly bef tween the side edges of the back E and the uprights t and the elastic straps 2li are secured by snap fasteners 25 to the inner sides of said uprights as best shown in Figure 6, The side edges of the rear flap portion li of the back section covering l5 are provided with snap fastener elements 2t for a purpose presentiy explained. The bottom edge of said rear nap portion il is provided with elastic straps 2l trained under the bottom panel i3 and secured by snap fasteners 2B t0 said panel as best shown in Figure 4.
A seat covering section 29 is provided, which is best shown ih Figure 7. The seat covering section 29 is of cap-like form and rectangular shaped to t down over the seat 2 with affront lower ilap portion 30 depending therefrom. Elastic straps 3l on the rear edge of said seat covering section 29 extend into the opening I I and are secured to the bar 20 by snap fasteners 32. Elastic straps 33 on the side edges of the seat covering section 23 extend into the spaces I2, as best shown in Figures 1 and 3, and are secured by snap fasteners 34 to bars 35 suitably fixed on top of the side base rails 9. The lower edge of thelower flap portion 30 -of the seat covering section 29 extends down over the front base rail I and is provided with elastic straps 36 trained under the bottom panel I3 and secured to said panel by snap fasteners 31.
Arm covering sections I3 are provided of envelope like form but open at the backs and bottoms thereof and which slip down over the arms 3. Elastic straps 39 are provided on the bottom edges of the arm covering sections 38 on the inner side of said sections and which extend into the spaces I2 and are fastened to the bars 35 by snap fasteners 4U. Elastic straps 4I are fastened to the bottom edges of said arm covering sections 38 on the outer sides thereof and which are trained under the bottom panel I3 and secured thereto by snap fasteners 42. The rear side edges of said arm covering sections 38 on the inner sides thereof are provided with elastic straps 43 which are extended between the side edges of the back I and the uprights 6 and secured to said uprights by snap fasteners 44. On the outer sides thereof, said arm covering sections 38 are provided with snap fastener elements 45 for co-action with the snap fastener elements 44 on the side edges of the rear ap portion of the back covering section I5, to fasten said outer edges to said side edges of the flap portion I'I.
The front lower ap portion 30 of the seat covering section 29 is fastened at its corners to the fronts of the arm covering sections 38 by snap fasteners 4B.
As will now be seen, my invention provides a complete covering for the chair of sectional form and in which each section is secured at one edge, at least, to the frame of the chair, in a manner such that the securing means or fasteners are hidden from view, but, may be rendered readily accessible by releasing the other fasteners of the sections. Also, each section is fastened to another section so that no gaps or wrinkles will appear at junctures of the sections. Any one or all sections may be removed for any purpose desired and the sections may be tailored inexpensively as will be manifest.
The foregoing will, it is believed, suice to impart a clear understanding of my invention Without further ex-planation.
Manifestly, the invention, as described, is susceptible of modification without departing from the inventive concept, and right is herein reserved to such modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
