Description

G. C. HARDIE PIPE AND NUT WRENCH PROVIDED WITH REVERSIBLE JAW FACES Filed Sept 29, 1947 INVEN TOR.
Attorneys Patented Nov. 21, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE PIPE AND NUT WRENCH PROVIDED -.ZVITH REVERSIBLE J FACES George'G. Hardie, Brooklyn, N. .Y.
Application September 29, 1.947, Serial No. 176,723
.1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to wrenches, and the primary object of the invention is to provide a wrench whose jaws comprise jaw members, each having pivotally :mounted thereon an angular reversable face plate which may be readily adjusted to adapt the wrench for use either as a pipe wrench or as a nut wrench.
A further object is to provide a wrench having a jaw composed -of a jaw member, and a face plate having angularly related flanges respectively provided with plain and toothed gripping faces, said face plate being pivoted on said jaw member for rocking adjustment about an axis parallel with said faces to bring either face into operative position.
Another object is to provide simple and efiicient means to mount the face plate on the jaw member, to limit rocking movement of said face plate, and to secure the face plate in adjusted positions.
The exact nature of the present invention, as well as other objects and features thereof, will become apparent from the following description when considered in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational View, partly broken away and in section, of a wrench embodying the present invention;
Figure 2 is an elevational view looking toward the left of Figure 1, partly broken away and in section;
Figure 3 is a view somewhat similar to Figure 2 showing the face plates of the jaws adjusted to adapt the wrench for use as a nut wrench;
Figure 4 is a fragmentary section taken on line 4-4 of Figure l; and
Figure 5 is a fragmentary perspective view of the upper portion of the wrench with the jaw faces removed.
In the drawing, the invention has been illustrated as embodied in a wrench of the type including a stationary outer jaw. a sliding adjustable inner jaw, and an adjusting screw for adjusting the inner jaw. This wrench comprises a shank '5 having its inner end formed to provide a handle 6, and provided at its outer end with a stationary jaw member I disposed at right angles to the shank. The shank is provided between its ends with a rigid arm 8 disposed at right angles to the shank and parallel with the jaw member 1, said arm being provided with an internally threaded tubular free end portion 9 whose axis is parallel with the shank and which threadedly receives the stem of an adjusting screw Ill.
The wrench further includes an adjustable inner jaw member ll slidably mounted on the inner jaw member ll.
shank 5 and provided at its inner end with a socketed member H having the outer end of the adjusting screw ll) swivelled therein. For the latter purpose, the outer end of the adjusting screw 'l'fl is provided with an annular groove 12 which receives the inner end of a screw l2" threaded through one side of thesocketed member II.
The inner jaw member H is mounted onthe shank'5 between the outerjaw member 1 and'the arm 8 by means of cheek-plates l 3 that'havecends projecting beyond an end of the jaw member H and terminating in flanges l'3 directed toward each other and slidably engaged in longitudinal grooves It provided in opposite sides of the shank 5. It will be noted that the outer jaw member I is of rounded cross section at its inner side, and that the inner jaw member II has an outer portion of rounded cross section at its outer side as respectively indicated at a and b in Figure 5. A face plate having angularly related flanges l5 and I6 is pivotally mounted on each of the jaw members I and II for rocking adjustment about an axis parallel with the faces of the flanges l5 and I6. Thus, the face plates may be disposed as shown in Figures 1 and 2 to adapt the wrench fOr use as a pipe wrench, or as in Figure 3 to adapt the wrench for use as a nut wrench. In accordance with this statement, it is pointed out that the flange l5 has a plain flat gripping face 0, and that the flange 16 has a toothed gripping face d.
Each face plate is provided at one end with a disk member I! that connects the flanges l5 and I6 and has a central aperture. A set screw l8 extends through this aperture of disk member I! and is threaded into the associated jaw member. At its other end, the face plate of the outer jaw member 1 is engaged in a notch I9 provided in the adjacent edge of shank 5. The inner jaw member H has an outward extension 20 which has a forwardly directed lug 2| under which is engaged the inner end of the face plate for said In this way, the face plates are mounted on the jaw members for free rocking movement, and they may be secured in either position of adjustment by tightening the associated set screws Is. It will be apparent that the face plate of the'outer jaw member is assembled to the latter by merely engaging the end of said face plate in the notch l9 and then passing the associated set screw I8 through the disk member I! of this face plate and threading it into said jaw member 1. In a like manner, the inner end of the face plate for jaw member H is simply engaged under lug 2| and then the associated set screw 18 is passed through the disk member I! of this face plate and threaded into the jaw member II. The inner end of the face plates are smooth and rounded concentric with the axes of screws l8 so that they may be readily turned r rocked about said axes. The jaw members 1 and II are provided with lateral flanges 22 which act to properl limit the rocking movement of the face plates. In other words, when the face plate is rocked in one direction, the free edge of flange [5 contacts one of the flanges 22, and when said face plate is rocked in the opposite direction, the free edge of the flange IE will engage the other flange 22 of the associated jaw member. As shown, the cheek plates [3 may be separate from the inner jaw member II and riveted to opposite sides of the inner portion of the latter as at 23.
From the foregoing description, it is believed that the construction, manner of use, and advantages of the present invention will be readily understood and appreciated by those skilled in the art. It will be seen that the wrench is simple and comparatively inexpensive in construction, and that it is adapted to be readily arranged for operation as a pipe wrench or as a nut wrench. Changes in the form, proportion andrminor details of construction may be resorted to, such as fairly fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
Having described the claimed as new is:
invention, what is A wrench including a shank having a stationary outer rounded jaw member and formed with a recess at the inner end of said jaw member, a face plate having two flanges disposed at a right angle to each other and respectively provided with plane and toothed gripping faces, a centrally apertured disk connecting the flanges at the outer end of the face plate, the inner end of the face plate being movable in said recess, said disk being disposed against the outer end of the jaw member, and a pivot element extending through the disk and into the jaw member to mount the face plate on the jaw member for rocking adjustment about an axis parallel with said faces to bring either face into operative position, said jaw member having stop flanges at pposite sides thereof engageable by edges of the respective flanges of the face plate to limit rocking movement of the latter in opposite directions.
