WHIFFLETREE HOOK.
Patented Jan. 31, 1882.
NHED STATES PATENT Ormca.
NATHAN HILL, OF CLYDE, ASSIGNOR OE THREE-FOURIHS TO JOHN K. DIVERS, OF BANGOR, MICHIGAN.
WHlFFL,ETREE-HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 253,048, dated January 31, 1882.
Application filed November 9, 1881.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, NATHAN HILL, of (Hyde, in the county of Allegan and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Whiffletree-Hooks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in whifliletree-hooks; and it consists in forming a solid hook connected directly to the whit'tlctree, with bars or ridges running longitudinally along the shank of the hook, for the purpose of preventing the tug-link from sliding back on the shank and being jammed or twisted.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved book.
A is a ferrule adapted to fit the end of the whiftletree. B is the shank, and 0 the hook, formed integral with the ferrule; and D is a barb or catch, extending at right angles to the hook, over which the tug-link is slipped.
0n the shank B of the hook are formed ribs or bars E, extending from the ferrule down to that portion of the hook opposite the base of the catch D. WVhen the tug-link is slipped over the catch and turned into position the greater diameter of the bars E prevent any backward movement of such link, which in whiffletrees as usually constructed often re- 0 sults in jamming the link against the whiffle- (No model.)
- tree in such a position that the pull is in a lateral direction, and the links are very frequently twisted and broken. By my device any such backward motion is entirely prevented. The use of these bars or ridges also increases the strength of the book without adding to its cost.
I am aware that a whiffletree-hook has been patented which is bentinto shape so as to leave a shoulder against which the link may hear if forced backward, and as my invention is confined to the formation of ridges or bars upon the shank itself, I desire to disclaim the invention alluded to.
What I claim is 5 1. In combination with the shank of a whiffletree-hook, the longitudinal ribs or bars E, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The described whiffletree-hook, consisting of the ferrule A, rigid hook B, catch or barb D, and the ribs or bars E, all constructed of a single piece'of metal.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
NATHAN HILL.
