This invention relates to an improvement in awnings, specifically the non-collapsible rigid type.
"An object: of this invention is the provision of an improved air convecting ventilating awning.
A further object of this invention is the provision of an improved system of air flow assisting louvers.
A still further object of this invention resides in the provision of a single piece element construction whereby cost of construction is materially reduced.
Another object of this invention is the provision of means for making a sturdy and rigid construction.
Other objects residing in the construction and structural details, shall become readily apparent to those skilled in the art. after a consideration of the following detailed description and the appended drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the preferred embodiment of the invention.
Figure 2 is a section taken on line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a sectional detail of the channel construction of a portion of the invention and is taken on the line 33 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on line 44 of Figure 1 taken in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 5 is sectional detail of Figure 1 taken on line 6-5 thereof.
Referring to the drawing in more specific detail and taking Figure 1 as most illustrative, i0 designates in a general way the preferred embodiment of the instant invention. A metallic cover piece I2 is provided with a pair of end members I4 substantially triangular in shape fixed thereto by means of any suitable connection such as rivets or screws or the like. A depending ledge I8 is secured to one end of cover piece I2 and a metallic strip l8 with apertures 20 therein is secured to the other end of the cover piece i2.
Referring now to the structural details of each element, it is seen that the cover piece I2 is formed from a single sheet of metallic stock. It is preferably pressed (see Figure 3) into a series of alternately reversed U channels, that is. the first channel 22 faces down and the second channel 24 faces up. During the manufacture of the channels 22 and 24 louvers 28 may be pressed into the legs of the channel facing toward the inner portion of each down facing channel 22. This construction is preferred in order to prohibit most rain water from going into the Also pressed in the down facing I single sheet stock and are preferably pressed into a continuous chain of modified V channels 28 one leg of which is longer than the other. Louvers 30 similar to those in the cover piece are provided in the shorter leg of the V channels.
A metallic member 32 is secured lengthwise of the cover piece l2 and acts as a stiffener for the entire device and forms a base for securingthe depending ledge IE to the cover member 12 to form a unitary structure by means of some conventional fastening means such as rivets 34.
Referring now to Figures 2 and 5, a stiffener rod 36, secured by conventional means indicated as rivets 34, is secured adjacent the bottom edge of member l4 for stiffening purposes. A small angle member 38 is provided at the two ends of member ii for auxiliary securing purposes connecting the end members I4 and the depending ledge I6.
In operation convection currents effect an air flow through the invention, the heated air rising through the upper louvers and flowing continually therethrough, thereby not only shading but actually increasing cooling effect.
What I claim as new is:
A substantially unitary and rigid awning comprising a pair of rigid side members and a rigid cover piece, said cover piece having each side member rigidly secured to opposite edges thereof, said side members formed as a continuous chain of modified V channels, having one leg longer than the other. said cover piece formed as a continuous chain of alternately reversed U channels and outwardly struck louvers in the said modified V channels and in the shorter leg thereof and inwardly struck longitudinally spaced louvers in each leg of the said U channels.
