2 Claims.

The invention relates to improvements in bathtubs, as described in the present specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings that form a part of the same.

The invention consists essentially of the novel features of construction as pointed out broadly and specificall in the claims for novelty following a description containing an explanation in detail of an acceptable form of the invention.

The objects of the invention are to provide a bathtub in which the overflow permits the draining of water from the rear thereof; to save hot Water in a bathtub by permitting same to be distributed therein before flowing out through the overflow; to furnish a bathtub which may be easily molded or cast; to permit a more even distribution of hot and cold waterin a bathtub; to make a bathtub which will be simple in construction and inexpensive to manufacture, to furnish a means whereby the person using the bath and desiring to remain therein for a thorough soaking may be assured of the water remaining at the desired temperature through causing the flow of hot water from the faucet to be directed to the rear of the bath before it comes in contact with the overflow pipe which is contrary to that which ordinarily occurs in the conventional type of bathtub; and generally to provide a bathtub which will be durable and efficient in its use.

Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the various figures.

Referring to the drawings, the bathtub is molded or cast and may be of any suitable material. The side Walls I and H, and the front wall l2 of the bathtub has the continuous trough or groove formation l3 in same towards the upper edge thereof. This trough l3 terminates towards the rear of the side walls Ill and II and the inner wall of same has the cutouts l4 and MA, respectively, at each end thereof. These cutouts in the inner wall of the trough extend to the bottom thereof permitting water to enter the same when this level is reached. The bottom of the trough i3 is located at a suitable level with respect to the overflow drain or overflow outlet it so as to enable the water entering this trough to flow therefrom. In this instance, the bottom of the trough i3 is of an arcuate shape thus facilitating cleaning of the same. However it Will be seen that the bottom of this trough may be any other suitable shape without affecting the advantages of the invention.

The bathtub is equipped with the conventional hot and cold water faucets or water inlets l6 and l! which extend over the front wall l2 of same. The bottom of the bathtub is also provided with a drain or Water outlet 18 at the forward end thereof.

In the use of the invention, the bathtub may be filled with hot water, cold water or a combination of the two. A person wishing to remain in the bathtub for a considerable length of time will find that the water therein becomes cold and accordingl the hot water faucet is opened. As the hot water flows into the bathtub the water at the rear thereof is drained off by means of the trough l3 and the overflow drain [5. In this manner the water entering the bathtub is not lost as in the case of the ordinary type of bathtub. Furthermore by adding additional hot water at the front of this bathtub and discharging cooler water at the rear thereof, a constant temperature may be maintained thus rendering the invention extremely valuable for certain types of illnesses.

What I claim is:

1. In bathtubs, a bathtub comprising a front wall, side walls and a rear wall, water inlet means located over said front wall, a water outlet in the bottom of said bathtub, a formed trough extending part way around the inside of said bathtub adjacent to the top thereof, said trough ex tending across said front wall and continuing along each of said side walls in continuous unbroken formation and terminating short of said rear Wall, said trough having a cut-out at each end thereof providing access to said trough of the water in said bathtub when same reaches the level of the cut-out, an overflow drain in said front wall and leading into said trough at that point and adapted to drain off the Water flowing along said trough.

In bathtubs, a bathtub comprising a bottom, front and rear walls and side walls, Water inlet means, a Water outlet in said bottom for emptying said bathtub, a groove formation on the inside of said bathtub and extending across said front wall to continue along each of said side walls terminating short of said rear wall and having a cut-out at the rear thereof on each of said side walls, said groove formation being located at predetermined distance from the top of said bathtub, an overflow drain connecting with said groove formation where same extends across said front wall, said groove formation re- 3 ceiving water in the tub through the aforesaid cut-outs when said bathtub fills to the level thereof and directing the same forward to said overflow drain thus permitting a continuous flow of fresh Water into said bathtub at the front thereof and the draining ofi of surplus water from the rear of the bathtub, the incoming water thus being permitted to flow throughout the said bathtub before same can drain ofi.
