Be it known that I, THOMAS W. CARTER, a Y
citizen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ad justableBeam-Trusses; and Ido hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figurel represents my improved beam t1 ass or brace as viewed from the upper side. Fig. 2 is a side elevation; and Fig. 3 is a vertical section thereof, taken through the line 00 x of Fig. 2.
The purpose of this invention is to provide a convenient and efficient means for leveling 0r straightening sprung or camber-ed beams; and it consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.
1n carrying out my invention I employ two stout iron braces or rods, A A, the upper or outer ends having bolts a passing through them.
Upon the bolts 'a and each side of the braces A are placedwashers and plates b, each bent so as to fit against the corners of the beams, to which they may be bolted or fastened. These plates and washers hold the braces intact with and centrally between the beams.
The lower or inner end of the braces A are articulated by means of headed and nutted bolts 0 to or between parallel plates or links D, provided with semicircular shoulders or projections d at their centers on their upper sides, which bear in concaved shoulders d upon the pillar-screw E, which is connected by a pivotal bolt, (1 to the links, to allow the links to readily accommodate themselves to slight variations of movement between the braces, according as a difference of pressure or strain is brought upon either of the outer ends of the braces.

To apply the device, connect the free ends of the rods by their belts to and between the ends of the beams, the plates 1) having been slipped on the s lid 'bolts, so as to fit against and hold the rods centrally between the beams. Then screw up the nut, which will force the screw down and its bearing-block upward, transmitting upward pressure upon the center of the beams, an endwise pull simultaneously being exerted upon the ends of the beams. This operation is continued until the beams are leveled or straightened.
G is a lock-plate slipped around the nut, and resting upon the bearing, to prevent the accidental or possible unscrewing of the nut.
'It is obvious that shrinkage can be readily compensated by readjusting thetruss or braces. Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with the central bearing-block, nut, and pillar-screw, having the concaved shoulders, of the pivoted semicircularly-shouldered plates or levers and the articulated braces, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with the central bearing-block, nut, and pillar-screw, of the pivoted plates or levers and the articulated braces, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
