This invention relates to book holders and, more particularly, to improvements in book hold- 'ers of the character adapted to support bulky reference books, suchas telephone directories and the like.

It is an object of the present invention to provide a book holder adapted to support and contain telephone directories or other similarly bulky references, and which enables the contained book to be easily perused. It is another object of the present invention to provide book holders of the character mentioned which may be attached to a Wallor similar surface and which occupies a minimum of space when in operative and inoperative positions. A further object of the present invention is to provide a book holder of the character mentioned, comprising means to support adequately a relatively bulky reference while in operative or inoperative position.

A further and specific object of the present invention is to provide means to connect a refer ence book to a book holder and yet which enables easy visual access to all parts of the said book. A further object of the present invention is to provide a book holder comprising means to contain reference books of the character of telephone and city directories of varying thicknesses.

Further objects of the present invention are to J provide a book holder of the character mentioned, which is comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture and yet which is sturdy of construction and facile of installation.

Further objects of the present invention will become apparent upon reference to the specification and accompanying drawings in which similar characters of references represent corresponding parts in the several views.

The book retaining member 22 serves a dual function in that it acts as a hinge member to connect pivotally the cover and support member 5 together, as well as acting as a book securing member. Member 22 comprises a wire or rod bent at right angles adjacent opposite ends, as at 3!, and then re-bent in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the rod as at 32, to form offset terminal portions 33 and 3A which, in effect, op-

erate as hinge portions while the portion of the rod between the bends operates essentially as a book securing member.

As illustrated herein, the terminal 33 is threaded to receive a nut 35 while the opposite terminal E i is formed as a finger hold. It is obvious that directories of various thicknesses may be accommodated in the holder by raising and lowering the cover member 15 relative to the member 5 and selectively positioning the book retainin member 22 in position in appropriate apertures pro- K vided in the ear l2 and [8.

15 and 5, it is possible to ensure visual access to all parts of a bulky book, such as a metropolitan telephone directory, inasmuch as the portion 35 which is offset from the pivotal axis may move arcuately as the pages of the book are opened. a

Diagrammatic illustrations indicating the problem of visual access to portions of a large book of the order of a metropolitan directory is illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6. The difficulty of visual access to the relatively small print i particularly inherent when endeavoring to see telephone numbers and the like adjacent the back binding when the book has been opened to a page near a front or back cover.

Fig. 6 illustrates diagrammatically the present invention showing that the book securing means rotates in conformity with movement of the leaves of the book and enables an unrestricted view of the heretofore visually unaccessible marginal print adjacent the back binding cover of a directory.

I prefer to attach pivotally the holder to the wall bracket as at 4 in a position so that when the holder is moved upwardly into the broken line position of Fig. 2, it is inclined slightly toward the wall A in order to prevent effectively the holder from falling into the full line position which, obviously, would occupy a greater area.

I prefer to cut away a part of the support 8, as at 37, to allow a user manual access to a directory for purposes of thumbing through the pages thereof.

The invention, though simple, is effective to support and contain in a minimum of space directories or the like of varying thicknesses and which allows the user complete and unrestricted access to all parts of a directory contained therein.

While certain features and parts of the present invention have been set forth in detail for purposes of clarity of example and illustration, it is understood that various changes and variations may be practiced within the spirit of the invention and scope of the appended claims.

I claim:

1. A book support comprising a book support member provided with a pair of projected cars, a cover member provided with a pair of projected ears, apertures in said ears, a book retaining member having portions thereof inserted through registered apertures in said ears to connect said cover member and support member pivotally, said book retaining member comprising a book securing portion disposed parallel to and offset from the pivotal axis of said cover member and support member.

2. A book support comprising a firstbook support member provided with a pair of ears,a cover member provided with a pair of ears,apertures in said ears, means comprising a book retaining member and said ears to connect said cover and support member pivotally, a bracket support connected pivotally to said support member and means to limit the pivotal movement of said support member relative to said support bracket comprising an extension of said support mem ber and a stop formed in said wall bracket.

3. A book holder according to claim 2 having an operative and an inoperative position and means comprising another book support member carried by said first book support member to support a book when said holder is in inoperative position.

4. A book holder comprising a first book upport member connected pivotally to a wall bracket, an extension formed integrally with'said sup port member, means comprising a stop member formed in said wall bracket to coact with said extension to limit pivotal movement of said support member relative to said bracket, a cover member, complementary ears carried by said support member and cover member, apertures in said ears, and. a book retaining member comprising terminal portions and a book securing portion, said terminal portions secured removably and rotatably in apertures provided in said ears to connect pivotally said cover member and support member, said hook securing portion disposed parallel to the pivotal axis of said cover and support members and spaced inwardly from said pivotal axis.

5. A book holder according to claim 4 and wherein said first book support member is provided with a right angularly disposed second book support member arranged and constructed to support a book contained in said holder when said first support is tilted vertically relative to said wall bracket.

6. A book holder comprising a first book support member connected pivotally to a wall bracket, an extension formed integrally with said support member, means comprising a stop member formed in said wall bracket to coact with said extension to limit pivotal movement of said support member relative to said bracket, a cover member, complementary pairs of ears carried by said support member and cover member, apertures in said ears, at least one ear of each said pair of cars provided with a plurality of apertures, and a book retaining member comprising terminal portions and a book 'securing portion, said terminal portions securdjremovably and rotatably in apertures provide'di'in said ears to connect pivotally said cover iiiember and support member," said book securing portion disposed parallel to the pivotal axis of r said cover and support members and spaced inwardly from said pivotal axis, an aperture in one said ear registrable with a plurality of apertures in a complementary ear whereby the book support member and said cover member may be positioned adjustably withrespect to one another and secured in adjusted position by said terminal portions.
