JOHN WALL, OF AMSTERDAM, NEW YORK.
CARDING-MACHINE.
SPCIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 252,821, dated January 24, 1882. Application filed August 1, 18781. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN VALL, of Amslerdam, in the county ofll/Iontgomery and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oarding-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference heilig had to the accom pnnying drawings, which form a part of this specilication, and in which- Figure l is a sectional view of a cardingmachine with my improvement applied thereto for cleaning cotton, and Fig. 2 is a similar View of machine with my improvement as applied Vfor cleaning wool.
,This invention has relation to earding-machilies, its object being to effect the cleaning' ofthe main cylinderI automatically, to produce better work and more of it without waste; and it consists in applying to acarding-machine of any ot' the forms now in use a toothed cylinder having a closely-fitted case, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In carrying out my invention I employ, as will be observed by referring to the accompanying drawings, in connection with the larger or main cylinder A of any ofthe carding-ma chines now in use, a cylinder, B, covered with needle-pointed or other wire, so as to provide the cylinder with teeth tt. lt is driven so as to run at a greater speed than the main cylinder, which latteris provided with a larger bandwheel, I, connected by band or strap J with the large band-wheel K on the main cylinder A, from which mechanism it will be readily seen that 4the cylinder B will revolve more rapidly than cylinder A. The toothed cylinder B is arranged preferably somewhat below the central horizontal plane of the doft'er C and under the main cylinder A. The cylinder or stripper B is also inclosed in a case or jacket, D, which receives and holds the extraneous or refuse matter removed from the cotton by the said cylinder or stripper. This enables the carded cotton to issue in a cleaner and better condition and in greater quantities, without the waste heretofore experienced.
For treating wool the arrangement of the parts is such as pointed out in Fig. 2.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. As an improvementin carding-machines, the combination ofthe main cylinder A, cylinder or stripper B, arranged under the main cylinder and provided with metallic teeth a, and the case orjacket D, inclosing said cylinder B and forming a receptacle for the refuse mattei', substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. As an improvementin eenling-machines, the combination, with the main cylinder A, of the toothed cylinder B, arranged underneath the main cylinder, and suitable mechanism by which the latter is driven at a greater speed than the former, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as myown I have hereto affixed my signature i-n presence of two witnesses.
JOHN WALL.
