Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED JEAN, HUET, OF PARIS, FRANCE.
MANUFACTURE OF GELATINE AND GLUE FROM ANIMAL REFUSE 0R OFFAL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 252,771, dated January 24, 1882,
' Application filed December 29, 1881. (No specimens.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED JEAN HUET, of Paris, in the Republic of France, have in vented a new and useful Jmprovement in the Manufacture of Gelatine and Glue from Animal Refuse or Offal, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification.
This invention has reference to the preservation of animal refuse or offal for the manufacture of glue and gelatine therefrom, and more particularly of the scraps of flesh and adipose tissue removed from hides or skins after depilation, the scrapings of the heads and legs, the nerves, tendons, and the like, which constitute the parts of the refuse or offal most rich in gelatine.
The invention has for its object not only to eflectin a better and more economical way than heretofore the preservation of these matters in condition for the manufacture of glue and gelatine therefrom, but also to make a saving of the grease or fat which is lost by the methods commonly employed. r
In the process of depilation or treatment of the hides and skins preparatory to pulling out the hair the grease or fat undergoes incipient saponification, so that in the subsequent treatment of the scraps or refuse it is lost.
It is well known that it is not possible to manufacture glue and gelatine from the refuse oroffal at all seasons of the year, and that even in the proper season operations must sometimes be stopped for a time. It is therefore necessary to adopt some means of preserving the said refuse or offal till it can be treated, and this means must be such as to entirely prevent fermentation and to leave the material in condition for subsequent treatment, since the slightest alteration in the scraps of refuse or offal has an injurious influence on the result, the brothsturn and will not gelatinize, the desiccation of the glue or gelatine is long and difiicult, and it is well nigh impossible to obtain a product with a good fracture.
Heretofore the method of preservation commonly employed has been to place'the refuse or offal in milk of lime, which is renewed as often as ammoniacal emanations begin to be given off. 4 This mode requires that the refuse or offal when it comes to be treated for glue and gelatine be subjected to an energetic washing. (which is long and expensive) in order to remove all the lime wherewith it is impregnated.
In studying the action of. chloride of aluminium upon animal tissues it has been found by me that those materials which by boiling in water yield glue and gelatine are not attacked by this agent, whereas the other elements are tanned more or less strongly, and that all the elements or materials without exception, even the liquids, are preserved from putrefaction.
The present invention consists in substitut-j ing chloride of aluminium for the lime in the ordinary process. The salt can be used pure or in the condition obtained by acting upon certain natural rocks with hydrochloric acid at ordinary temperatures.
By this invention the following important results are obtained: All cause of fermentation is avoided. Thechlorideofalumininm,having a sligh tly-acid reaction, acts upon the lime soap or emulsions formed in the depilatory process, neutralizing the lime and setting at liberty thefat or grease, so that the five to seven per cent. thereof contained in the refuse or offal may be recovered. The coloring-matters of the blood and flesh being tanned and made insoluble, the broths are less colored and the final products of a superior quality. The long and costly operation of washing the lime from the refuse is done away with. The small broths can be preserved without fear of fermentation, and profit can be derived from them.
I claim---- 7 The improvemeutin the manufacture of glue and 'gelatiue consisting in treating the gela= tine-yielding materials with chloride ofaluminium, as and for the purpose described;
In testimony whereofl have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing wit- 9o nesses.
ALFRED JEAN HUET.
