CLARA CARE AND GEORGE D. sootr'r, on NEW YORK, N. Y., EXEOUTRIX AND EXEoUToE OF WILLIAM s. CARR, DEoEAsED.
VALVE FOR WATER-CLOSET'CISTERNS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 252,735, dated January 24, 1882. Application filed October 22, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that WILLIAM S. CARR, late of the city and State of New York, now deceased, did invent an Improvement in Valves for Water-Closet Oisterns, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to dispense with the servicebox in water-closet cisterns, and at the same time prevent the waste of water. 1
This improvement is adapted to allow the water to flow gradually from the cistern after the valve thereof has been raised by a pull, or by an additional sleeve. The same valve is adapted to a hopper water-closet, in which the cistern-valve is lifted by the depression of the water-closet seat, and the water does not run until the seat is released.
In the drawings, Figure lis a vertical section of the valve and its appliances, and Fig.
2 is asectional plan at the line no a.
' The cylinder a is provided with a flange, 1, beneath the bottom I) of the cistern, and the upper end of said cylinder (0 passes through the cistern-bottom and forms a valve-seat. The nut and washer 2 serve to connect the cylinder firmly to the cistern. At one side of the cylinder to there is a. coupling, (7, and pipe leading to the water-closet. A cylinder, 6, is
0 screwed to the bottom of the cylinder 0, and its interior surface is larger than the tubef. The air and overflow tube f is finished 01f smooth at its lower end to slide in the contracted lower end of the cylinder to, and it has 5 a small valve, 1?, at the otherwise closed lower end opening outwardly, so that when the tube fis-raised water may flow into the cylinder 0, and such water-cylinder 6 will act as a dashpot or variable chamber to prevent the tubef 4o descending rapidly, because the valvct' closes and the water is sufficiently confined to prevent the tube fdesccnding rapidly, in order that the valve h that is cariied by the tubef may remain open the proper time before it closes upon the seat at the upper end of the cylinder a;
It is to be understood that the water in the cylinder 0 will pass gradually up through the small space left between the outside of the tubef and the contracted part of the cylinder (1 as the tube and valve descend.
Thetubefis slotted below the valve h for the passage of water from the cistern to the pipe leading to the closet, and this tubef is to be lifted either by the water-closet pull or by a connection to the seat of the hopper watercloset, such connections being the ordinary levers and wires or chains. Hence if a pull is used it will be lifted and then dropped, and the tubefand valve are raised and descend 6o gradually, allowing the water to run to the closet in the required quantity; but ifa hopper-closet and hinged seat are used the water would continue to run as long as the seat was depressed, The slotted portion of the tubefis thereforesurrounded with a sliding sleeve, a, to which the wire 0 is connected, and by which the tubefis lifted. Hence when the closetscatis depressed the sleeve a is moved up to the valve h and lifts the same, and the tube fand said sleeve a keepthe slots in the tube f covered, so that water cannot flow to the closet because the sleeve it also fills the opening of the valve-seat; but as soon as the pressure on the seat of the closet is removed the sleeve it falls by gravity and allows the water to run, as before set forth, until the tubefgradually descends and the valve h closes upon its seat, as aforesaid.
' What is claimed as theinvention of the said WILLIAM S. GARE is 1. The combination, in a cistern-valve for water-closets, of the cylinder a, pipe to the water-closet, water-cylinder e, tubef, valve IL around the same, and small valve 2' at the lower 'end, substantial'y as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The sleeve a, sliding'upon the slotted portion of the tubef, and to which sleeve the wire or connection to the water-closet is at- 9c tached, in combination with the valve h, (-ylinder a, water-cylinder c, and seat for the valve h, substantially as set forth.
Signed by us this 21st day of December, A.
