INTERCONVERTIBLE CRIB AND TABLE.-
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 252,730, dated January 24, 1882.
Application filed November 18, 1881. (N0 model.) i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SANFORD S. BURR, of Winnetka, in the State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Intercouvertible Cribs and Tables, of which the following is a specification.
My object is to provide a useful article of furniture that can be used as a crib or as a table, as desired. I am aware that such ,an ar-' ticle, broadly considered,is not new, but here tofore, so far as I am informed, the crib has usually been converted intoa table by folding or turning up its ends, as exemplified, for instance, in my Patent No. 60,684, of January 1, 1867. In a crib otthis kind, howevcr, the'legs are necessarily placed so near the center as to make the 'crib unsafe, while the article as a whole has been too complicated and expensive as well. These disadvantages have combined to prevent the use or sale 01 the articles to any extent.
I find that a simple and entirelyeffective article which can readily be converted from a crib into a table, or vice versa, may be obtained by providing for uscin connection with the crib ends a top and a shelf, which, when the crib sides are removed, can be fitted to the crib ends, so as to form a strong and durable Such an article is shown in detail in the drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the crib. Fig. 2 is a like view of the table. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are details, hereinafter referred to.
A are the crib ends; and B are the crib sides detachably fastened to the ends of the crib by the usual bed-irons, as indicated at al Fig. 3, or in any other customary way. That end A which is at the head of the crib may be provided with an ornamental head-piece, (J; but that piece, in case it is used, should be removably connected with the end A by dowels c, as indicated in Fig. 3, so that it may be taken off when the crib is to be converted into a table.
D is atable-top of any approved shape and material, and E is a shelf. These parts areso formed and constructed with reference to the crib ends A that they may, when the crib sides B are detached and removed, be fitted to and united with the said ends,as indicated in Fig.
2. Forthispurposethetable-topD,whichrcsts on top of the ends A, may be provided on the under side with dowels d, which will enter holes 0 in the corner-posts of the ends A, as'indicated in Fig. 4; or, in lieu thereof, the top may have on its under side cleats f, between ner the shelf E is supported by and attached to the crib ends at a point about midway of their height. This device E is a convenient shelf, and at the same time acts in conjunction with the top D to brace and uphold the ends and to stiffen the table. It is supported on cleats h, with which the ends A are provided on their interior opposite faces, and to which it may be fastened by dowels or screws, or it maybe detachably but securely fastened to the ends A in other appropriate ways. parts D E, which, as before said, are designed to be sold with the crib, are inexpensive, and do not appreciably increase the price of the article.
In order to convert the crib into a table, all that is needed is to remove the crib sides, and of course the slats, and then to fitto the crib ends A the top I) and shelf E, as above described and the reconversion ofthe table into a crib is accomplished with equal facility.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An interconvertible crib and table, comprising the crib ends A and the crib sides B and top and shelf D E, adapted to be connected to and interchangeably used with said crib ends in the manner and for the purposes herein specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 16th day of September, 1881.
SANFORD S. BURR.
