The circumferential pressure between the wheels i8 and 23 and the tension on the resilient strip 26 may be adjusted by merely inserting a screw-driver or the like, or even a coin, in slot 3| of screw head 32 and turning the screw accordingly till the proper adjustment is attained for the cutting of a certain material. Lever arm i5 is formed with an aperture 33 for the insertion of the operators thumb while the main body ID has a finger-hold 34 which is adapted to be gripped by the fingers of the hand of the said operator. Numeral 42 represents a lug extending from body portion H and'abutting body [0 adjacent lug 21.
In the modification depicted in Fig. 5, there is seen a rubber or like seal 35 and a spring-lock washer 36 enclosing a ball bearing 3'! in anvil or idler wheel 38; the said'ball bearing 31 providing effortless rotation of said wheel 38 about shaft 39.
The operation of the pinking shears is as follows:
The device is first gripped by the operators thumb which is inserted in aperture 33 and by the fingers which engage fingerhold 34. Following this, pressure exerted on the finger parts 33 and 34 by the operator will cause lever arm 15 to pivot at M, relative to said body If], to such an extent that teeth H5, at the end of lever arm l5 opposite aperture 33 thereof, will move in the direction of the arrow and impart a rotative movement to toothed or cutter wheel l8 by the inter-meshing of said teeth 16 with teeth ll of the associated gear I! of said wheel [8; The idler wheel 23 acting as a rotatable'anvil for the cutter wheel l8 will move in the direction of the arrow upon rotationof said cutter wheel [8; the said wheels thereby gripping, inwardly drawing, and then cutting the material (not shown in drawing) therebetween. Because of torsion spring 20, pinion and not cutter [8 will rotate in the opposite direction, when the lever arm is raised.
It is to be observed that the adjusting screw [2 is disposed intermediate the resilient strip'ZE (which may be made of natural or synthetic rubber, or any other suitable resilient or elastomeric material) and the contactin wheels I8, 23. The diameter of bore 13 above seat 29 is slightly larger than the diameters of screw portion [2' and screw head 32 to give the necessary play for the resilient adjustment purposes as h'ereinbefore stated. Thus, both resilient strip 23 and adjusting screw l2 coact or cooperate to bring about the adjustment and resiliency of the cutting pressure between the contacting wheels I8, 23.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A pinking instrument for cutting material,
comprising three separate parts, one of saidperts comprising a lever having a toothed end and two other of said parts each carrying a wheel, one being a cutter and the other an anvil, said wheels having their respective circumferences in contacting engagement, a pin adjustably securing together said two other of said parts, said pin being disposed in a bore having a spherical seat formed in one of said two other of said parts, said pin having a shoulder abuttin against said seat, said lever being pivotally secured to one of the two other of said parts carrying the cutter, means meshing with said toothed end of the lever for imparting rotation to saidwheels by actuation of said lever for the cutting of said material, and resilient means disposed between said two other of said parts comprising cushioning means for said wheels and cooperating with said pin and said seat to impart a slight degree of flexibility to said two other" of said parts.
2. A pinking shears according to claim 1 wherein said bore is of a diameter greater than that of said pin thereby providing a clearance for said shoulder for adjustment purposes and renderin said wheels relatively elastic to one another.
3. In a pinking instrument for cutting sheet material; the combination of two separate wheel supporting members disposed in side by side relationship, a wheel at one end of each of said supporting members in circumferential alignment with each other, one of said wheels constituting a cutter and the other of said wheels constituting an anvil, means engaging one of said supporting members intermediate its ends and rockably and adjustably mounting said one supporting member on the other of said supporting members, resilient means interposed between the other end of said one supporting member and said other supporting member so that the peripheries of said wheels eifect resilient contact with each other, and means carried by one of said supporting members for effecting rotation of said wheels.
4. In a pinking instrument for cutting sheet material; the combination according to claim 3, wherein said means rockably and adjustably mounting said one supporting member on the other of said supporting members includes a screw member tapped into said other supporting member, and a bore in said one supporting member intermediate its ends loosely receiving said screw member to permit rockin of said one supporting member.
5. In a pinking instrument for cutting sheet material, the combination according to claim 4, wherein said bore is formed with a portion of reduced diameter having a spherical seat thereon, and said screw member is formed with a shoulder engageable with said spherical seat to hold said one supporting member on said other supporting member.
6. A pinking instrument for cutting material, comprising two separate parts, a wheel on each of said partshaving their respective circumferences in contacting engagement, one of said wheels being an anvil and the other of said wheels being a cutter, a pin securing said separate parts together and adjustable longitudinally at right angles to the plane of separation between said parts, said pin being disposed in a bore of greater diameter having a. spherical seat formed in one of said parts, said pin having a shoulder abutting against said seat, resilient means disposed between said parts constituting cushioning means for said wheels and cooperating with said pin and said seat to impart a slight degree of flexibility to the connection of said parts, and means carried by one of said parts operatively connected to the wheel thereon for efiecting rotation of said wheels.
7. A pinking instrument for cutting material, comprising two separate parts having inner edges thereof in confronting relationship, each of said parts carrying a wheel adjacent one end with the circumferences of said wheels contacting each other and the axes of rotation thereof being disposed in planes parallel to the plane of separation between said confronting inner edges, a bore formed in one of said parts at right angles to said plane of separation and having a spherical seat formed at the end of the bore adjacent to said inner edge of said one part, a screw member loosely extending in said bore and tapped into the other of said parts to be longitudinally adjustable, a shoulder on said screw member abutting against said seat for holding said one part to said other part, a resilient member interposed between the other end of said one part and said other part to provide a cushioned contact between the circumferences of said wheels, one of said wheels constituting a cutter and the other of said wheels constitutin an anvil, and means carried by one of said parts operatively connected to one of said wheels for efiecting rotation of said wheels.
