ATTORNEYS.
WITNESSES UNITED STATES nus uv soor'r, or
PATENT OFFICE BREECH-LOADING FIRE-:ARMJ,
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 252,703, dated January 24, 182 2.
Application filed July 23, 1881. (X0 model.) Patented in England July 10, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY SCOTT, of Birmingha-m England, have invented certain new and use't'ul Improvements in Fire- Arms, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has reference to breech-loadi ng smal'l-arms of thekind commonly called .tdrop-down guns; 'and'the invention consists in the arrangements or combinations of parts, hereinafter dcscribed,f0r eockiugthe concealed or internal hammers of the said guns, and also the arrangen'ient ot' the parts, hereinafter described, of safety apparatus for preventing the accidental discharge of the guns.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a vertical longitudinal section of the breech portion of a drop-down gun containing cocking mechanism according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the body of the gun. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section of the same, taken beh nd the break-off, with the internal hammers omitted. Fi 4; represents a part of the cocking mechanism detached. Figs. 5 and 6 are-longitudinal sections of the gtnnsliowing the safety appliances. Fig. 7 is a detail. Fig. 8 isa detail view, showing the position of the. parts at the. moment the hammer arrives at full-co: h. Fig. 9 is adetail view of-th'c hannuer..
Similar letters of reference indicate corrisponding parts.
In the drawings, a (t are the internal hammers, carried by the lock plates 1) 11, let into the sides of theb'ody. cis the cross-axis turn- J ing in the said body. The axis 0 has at each end a cocking-arm, d, the ends of the arms being provided with shoulders d (1 for engaging with the shoulders a a on the internal hammers, a a.
0n the middle of cross-axis ca vertical arm, c, is fixed, the said arm extending upward to the under side of the tang of the break-oft. Under the said tang is a slide, f, worked by the thumb-plate g on the upper side of the tang, and capable of motion to and from the break-oil". The front end of the slide f. is jointed at h to the upper end of the vertical arm 0. When the slide f is in the normal or forward position represented in the drawings the cocking-arms d d lie in recesses in the side of the body and are out of contact with the cooked hammers (la, as represented, and the said hammers may fail to discharge the gun. After the gun ha been discharged the side shoulders, (I? (1. on the hammers a are in contact with the side shoulders, 11 11 on the ends of the cockiug arms d. (I.
In order to cock the gun at'ter tiring, the thumb-plate g of the slidefis moved back toward the butt-end ot' the gun. lhe said slide, acting through the vertical arm givesmotion to the cross-axis c, and the cocking-arms d d on the said axis are thereby made to throw back the hammers to full-cock by the shoulders (I d of the said arms beariugagainst the shoulders 0b a? of the hammers.
The hammers are etained in their cocked positions by the sear mechanism carried by the locleplates b b, as usual. ()n releasing the thumb-plate g of the slide it is returned by the locking-bolttothe normal position shown, and
tho cocking-arms d d are at the sametime removed from the cooked hammers, and the gun is ready to be dischai'ged. The lockingbolt iis worked by the middle vertic i1 ariu,e, which passesthrough it, so that the motion of the slidej'to cook the hannners at. the time withdraws the locking-b ilt'i to 'uut'asten the barrels. A spring gives the back or snapping action to the lock-bolt '2 and the back motion of the said bolt causes the return ot'slidefnud cocking-arms d (l to their normal positions. I have represented hamnu-rs having curved noses for striking directly on the cartridges, but fiat hammers acting upon strikers may be used with my improved cocking mechanism.
Instead of-operatiug the cocking-arms d d by means of a slide,f as described and illustrated, the said arms may b5 worked by a hand-lever on the side or under side of the gun. In this case .the middle arm, 0, is dispensed with, and the hand-lever is furnished with a square hole which takes upon a square part of the cross-axis c, carrying the eockingarms d d, or a hand-lever on the tang having a side or horizontal motion may be. usrd. In this modification the axis of the hand-lever is made to operate upon a short arm at the middle of the axis of the cocking-arms to move the said cocking-axis through the required angle, to cause the said cocking-aims to hit the hammers to full-cock.
Instead of cockinglthe gun by hand it may is the hand-leveron the tang, by which the be cocked'hy'tli' iisingofgthe breech ends of locking'bolt is withdrawn, the said hand-lever the barrelsforreloadingthegun. In this case having a side'or horizontal motion. In the 5 the-cocking mechanism-is modified so that the under side of the head oi'th -5 middle arm, 0, insteadvofbeing' situated above hemispherical hole or recess, 9:, and on the top thecross-axiscfls situatedbelow the said crossof the catch .9 and working in a hole in the axis,..as represented in Fig. 5, and works in a tangis a stud,s havinga roundedend. After recess in the middle of. the body. The-rear the gun has been loaded an'dthe barrels shut 60 mp, Z, on the nnder side'of the barrels is furdown the hand-lever takes the position repreio 'nished with a recess or curved seat, m,npon sented in Figs. 5 and 6that is, the hole 1; in whichthe extreme -end ef, ..tbe arm e bears. the headof the leveris brought opposite the whenlthe breech ends of the barrels rise from studs. on the catch s. n withdrawing the the break-off for charging the gun the seat 9]: satetyslide n to permit discharge of the gun 6 raises thearng e, and thercby'turns theiaxis c, t e risingof thecatch s to retain the slide in lgcariyingthe cocking-arms d through the 'reits withdrawn quired angle, and the arms effect the cooking enter the hole of the hammers a in the manner described with the gun has respect to the handworked arrangement. On shutting down thebarrels the arm e is carried own with them to the positionrepresented in the drawings, and the. cocking-arms d d are removed from the cocked hammers. y The improved safetyapparatus is repreward by the action of its compressed spring p 75 sented in'Fig. 5 as in action, andin Fig; 6 as withdrawn out of action. and its peg n bearing on the shoulders of the n isv the safety-slide, working in-the box 19 triggers prevents the accidental discharge of :fixed under the tang, the said slide being the gun. pressed outward, when at b rty to move, b Having thus .ully ic scribed my inventiomi 8o the coiled' spring 12 The outer end of the claim-as new and desire to secure by Letters 3 safety-slide n is provided with a peg, 11. the Patent a bottom of which is situated on alevel with the shoulders q q of'the triggers, so that when the internal hammers having side shoulders, a a said peg n bears upon the said shoulders, as the cross-axis 9, having at each end a side- 85 represented in Fig. 5,the latter cannot rise to shouldered cocking-arm, d, and a vertical arm, discharge the gun, and when the'said peg n e, and the slidefljointed to the'upper part of is withdrawn from 'olf the saidshoulders of the arm '0, as and or the purpose specified. the triggers, as represented in Fig. 6, the gun 2 hespring-actuated safety-slide 12, having may be discharged- Near the outer end ct. peg n, and the spring-catch s, in combination go the satetyslide n is a notch, r, and working with the triggers having shoulders q, substan-- 4 at-the't'ront face of the box p is a verticallytially as shown and described. sliding catch, 8, (shown separately'in front ele 3.
