To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, CHARLES' WILLIA lMUQHALL, of Wiesbaden, in the German Empire, have invented certain new and useful ImproveinentsinGas-Lamps,ot` which the l'ollowing is a sl'ieeitication.
This invention has reference toimprovenxents in gas-lamps otth'at class which are constructedon the so-called regenerative principle- Io that is to say, in which the air required for combustion is not conducted directly to the burner from below, as usual, but drawn in through a space formed between an interior and exterior chimney, and thence supplied in a heated-up state to the flame, so as to produce a more perfect and economical combustionvof the gas. .f
The invention consists in a gas-lamp having an interior cylinderin connection with an exte- 2o liorcylinder, which is supported on a separate closed cup belowthe burnerand held centrally to the interior cylinder by means of steadying springs applied to the gallery of the burner. The exterior cylinder is arranged with an outwardly-bulging reflector above the lower portion, which rcilector is made in one pieeewith the lower portion of the exterior cylinder and connected at the upper contracted part by la retaining-gallery with the interior chimney. 3o The switch is regulated bya lever extended below the supporting-cup of the outer chimney.

can be readily removed for cleaning from the 5o supporting-cupD. Theexterior cylinder,A`,is
retained in position centrally to the interiorcylinder, C, by means of steadying-springs a, which exten d down ward from the gallery of the burner D, as shown clearly in the drawings.
The upper part of the exterior cylinder, A, is bulged outwardly, forming :il-reflector, B, which is made integral with the cylinder A. This retlector B is contracted at its upper end and retained concentricallywith the inner cylinder, G, by a detachable gallery, b. The up- 6o per part ofthe reflector B maybe inade'either ofgroundor opaqueglass, so thattherays ofthe light coming from the flame are reflected downward without requiring a separate reflector or shade, as customary in the Argand lamps of this class.
The lower part of the cylinder A may be made either ot' plain cylindrical shape or with annularparallel horizontal grooves and ribs, as inFig.1; or it may be bulged out in the shape 7o` oa globe, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and in full lines in Fig. 2; or it may be ,made in any other form, as desired. The lowermost part, a', of the outer cylinder, A, is made of cylindrical shape and somewhat contracted, it being supported ou an annular shoulder, a?, of the cup D, and retained by an annular guide-rim, a3, ofthe same, as shown in Fig. l. rllhe centering-springs a, press from the inside upon the contracted lowermostpart, a', of the 8o cylinder A,so that the same is thereby rigidly held in position concentric to the inner cylinder, C.
For the purpose of regulating the switch E ofthe burner D', which in this case could Ilot 85 be taken hold of by the hand, a crank-lever, E', is connected at its upper end to the eye of the switch-arm and extended downward along the gas-supply tube, the lever being provided with a handle below the supporting-cup l). 9o The crank-lever Eis retained in tixed rings @of the gas-tube, so thatthe lever E', and thereby the'switch E, can be readily turned from the outside.
The air required for combustion is drawn iny from the outside through the annularspace between the interior cylinder,(), and the upper end ofthe exterior cylinder, A, and is trst warmed up in the bulged-out space at the interior of the reliector, being then drawn downward roo in the space between the lowei` part of the exterior cylinder, A,and the interior cylinder, C, and finally conducted to the burner,theairbe ing thus highly heated up .on its way to the burner. The illuminating-gas is also heated up to some extent in the shortJ piece of tubeinside ofthe supporting-cup D. The supply of highly-heated air to the flame ofthe burner produces the more perfect combustion of the gas, and increases, consequently, the illuminating;r power of' the flame.
Having thus described my invention, l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. `In agas'-lainp,the co1nbi1iaton,withan interior cylinder supported on the gallery of the burner, of an exterior cylinder provided with C, an exterior cylinder, A,having an enlarged conical reflector, B, at the Aupper part and a cylindrical contracted portion, a', at thelower part thereof, of' a fixed supporting-cup,D,hav ing an annular shoulder, a, and guideriin,a3, of centering-springs aa binding upon the lower contracted portion, a', oftheouter cylinder, and ofa detachable gallery', b, retaining the upper end of' the saine, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, in a gas-lamp, with the switch of the burner, of a crank-lever, E', applied to the switch and extended below the closed cup 1),so as to operate the switch from the outside, substantially as described.
