LAMP CONSTRUCTION.
Application filed October 12, 1923.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ZAOHARIAS OLSSON, a subject of the King of Sweden, and a resident of Westport, county of Fairfield, and State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Lamp Construction, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to lamp construction and with regard to its more specific features to construction for lamps of the lantern type.

Another object is to provide such a construction in which the parts are dependably assembled and yet readi- 'y accessible. Other objects will be in part obvious or in part pointed out hereinafter.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts as will be exem lified in the structure to be hereinafter escribed and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the following claims.
In the accompanying drawing there is shown a side elevation partly in section of a lamp illustrating one of the various possible embodiments of this invention.
Referring now to the drawing in detail there is shown a base member upon which the lamp is adapted to stand and which is hollow providing a reservoir for oil or other fuel adapted to supply the light. Supported upon the upper surface of the base member H) is a burner 11. which may comprise a wick passing downwardly therethrough into the oil reservoir in the usual manner and a regulating device 12 for adjustment of" the wick. The flame from the burner 11 is represented at 13.

The upper frame members 17 and 18 are joined to the lower frame members 15 and 16 by means of a suitable hinged connection as 19 at one side of the lamp and at the other side thereof are provided with a suitable detachable catch 20. To the upper ends of the frame met-diets 18 is secured as by means of rivets 21 a casing member 22 preferably-of substantially cylindrical shape and preferably forn'ied of sheet metal. The upper end of the casing member 22 is closed by a roof or cup member 23 formed of sheet metal and secured to the upper end of the casing 22 111 any de sired manner as by welding, The asing 22 adjacent its upper end is provided with a plurality of lateral openings 24 for the admission of air thereinto as will be later described and the edge portion 23 of the root 23 overhangs these openings to shield the same from the effects of wind.
Inside the casing 22, extending upwardly through the cap 23 and secured to the latter as by welding along theline 25 is a sheet metal member 26 of cylindrical form positioned above the burner 11 and thus providing a discharge passage or chimney for the heated gases or products of combustion from the burner. At the outer end of the chimney 26 is a sheet metal cap member 27 supported and spaced from the end of the chimney as by brackets 28, for example. The edge portion 2? of the cap 27 overhangs the end of the chimney and the products of combustion are directed by the cap 27 over the edge oi the chimney and downwardly so that the exhaust passage is shielded from wind and liz|.cl;tli 'at't down the chimney 26 is cli'celirw ly avoided.
Depending from the open lower end oi the casing 22 and substantially registering therewith is a globe 29 ct glass or other suitable translucent or transparent material. The globe is secured to the casing 22, for ex ample, by means of a clamping ring 30 engaging a flange 31 upon the lower end of the casing 22 and the upper flanged rim 32 ot the globe The casing 22 and the globe 29 are of such length relative to the length Cal - burner therein.

Depending from the lower end of the chimney 2G and substantially registering therewith is an inner globe member 34 extending about the burner 11. The globe 34-, is secured to the chimney 26, for example. by means of a clamping ring 35 engaging a flanged portion 36 of the chimney and the upper rim 3? of the globe. The open lower end of the globe Si is spaced from the upper surface of the base member 10 thus pro riding a passage thercbetween.
Considering now the operation of thisapparatus: airfor com'bustiona't theburner 11 is admitted at the openings 2%, passes down wardly through the passage provided between the casing 22 and the chimney 26 and between the globes 29 and ad andthence upwardly to the interior of the globe through its open lower end to supply the The products of combustion and heated gases from the burner 11 pass upwardly through the inner globe 3i and the chimney 26 and: are discharged beneath the overhanging edge of the cap 27. As the a' for combustion enters the openings 2 t it impinges against the surface of the chimney 26 which is heated by the products of combustion passing upwardly therethrough. The air then )asses downardly along the chimney 23 and t e globe 34 which are continually heated by products of combus tion passing upwardly therethrough and thus when the air for combustion reaches the burner 11 it is preheated to an extent which renders it exceedingly advantageous at the burner. This pro-heating of the air accordingly facilitates combustion at the burner and makes for a steady, even burn ing light. Furthermore, as has been described, the inlet openings for air and the outlet from the chimney are effectively shielded from wind so that a regular uniform draft. is supplied to the burner and back-- draft is avoided.
The lamp may be provided with. a suitable handle .38 secured, for example, to the cap member 23 as at 39. .l nthe construction shown in the drawing the two globes 29 and 3 -1: and the parts from which they are suspended are supported by the frame members 17 and 18. Therefore by releasing the catch 20 and swinging the upper portion of the lantern upwardly about the hinge 19 the globes are drawn away from the burner thus permitting immediate and convenient cess to the burner and its adjusting mecha- The frame members 15, 16, 17 and 18 serve to form a protection for the globes about the light. The entire construction is one which is strong and sturdy throughout,
capable of dependably standing up under rough usage.
As many possible embodin'ients may be made of the above invention and as many changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter hereinbefore set forth is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
I claim as my invention:
1. In lamp construction, in combination, a base, a burner mounted thereon, a chimney above said burner for discharging products of combustion, a globe secured to said chimney at its upper end and depending from said chimney above said burner, a casing. about said chimney secured. thereto and spaced therefrom and forming. a passage for air thereabout, said casing having. adjacent its top portion openings for the admission of air to said passage, a cover forsaid casing through which said. chimney projects, said cover overhanging the top of said casing to protect said air openings from the effects of winds, a globe secured to said casing at its upper end and depending from said casing exterior of said first globe meeting said base member at its lower end and forming a continuation of said air passage to the lower end of said inner globe, and frame members forming a hinged connection between said casing and said base, permitting swinging of said two globes as a unit upwardly from about said burner.
2. In lamp construction, in combination, a base, a burner mounted thereon, a chimney above said burner for discharging products of combustion, a globe secured to said chimney at its upper end and depending freely from said chimney about said burner and open at its lower end, a casing about said chimney secured thereto and spaced therefrom and forming a passage for air thereabout, said casing being adapted to admit air at its upper portion, a globe secured to said casing at its upper end and depending from said casing exterior of said first globe meeting said bascmember at; its lower end and forming a continuation of said air passage to the open lower end of said inner globe, a wire frame work extending upwardly from said base member exterior of said outer globe, a wire frame worl; extending downwardly from said casing resting upon said first frame work substantially midway between said casing and said base and supporting said casing, and a hinged connection between said two frame works whereby said two globes may be swung as a unit upwardly about said burner.
