10 Claims.
This invention relates to vented toilets, and in particular to jet type vented toilets.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a jet type vented toilet wherein a primary jet is employed to vent the toilet when the toilet seat is Down and in use coupled with a secondary jet which opens a normally closed vent closure valve disposed in the toilet, which vent closure valve closes automatically responsive to flushing the toilet when the toilet seat is Down and in use when the toilet is flushed, all permitting the use of standard toilet bowls and standard plumbing connections to and from the toilet bowl.
A further object of the invention is to provide a jet type vented toilet wherein primary and secondary jets operable responsive to a person sitting on the toilet seat and a normally closed vent closure valve are employed, the primary jet creating a negative pressure in the wash down ring of the toilet bowl whereby to withdraw vitiated air from the bowl to a vented sewer system, the secondary jet simultaneously opening the normally closed vent closure valve, all arranged to permit the flushing of the bowl to overcome the efiect of the secondary jet and permit the vent closure valve to close during the flushing of the toilet bowl.
Other objects of the invention will become apparent by reference to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:

Referring now to the drawings wherein like numerals refer to like and corresponding parts throughout the several views, the particular embodiment of the invention disclosed for the purpose of illustration is shown in connection with a standard tank type toilet bowl 20 connected to a drain 21 having the usual vent 22, a pressure water supply line 23 running to the toilet tank 24, and a hinged toilet seat 25, and comprises in general, a jet vent unit 26 having a pressure water line 230 running thereto from the pressure .water supply line 23 and including 24 and the wash down ring 202 of the said toilet bowl 20, a counter-weighted normally closed butterfly type vent closure valve 30 disposed between the flush passage 20! and the drain chamber 203 of the toilet bowl 20, which drain chamber 203 is separated from the receiving chamber 204 of the toilet bowl 20 by the usual water seal baflie 205 thereof, the said vent closure valve 30 being provided with a jet target flap 3| by means of which the said vent closure valve 30 is opened responsive to water from the secondary jet jetted thereagainst and closed responsive to water passing through the flush passage 20l to and through the wash down ring 202 of the toilet bowl 20, a linkage 32 between the hinged toilet seat 25 and the shut-off valve 21 of the jet vent unit 26 maintaining the said shut-off valve 21 closed except when the toilet seat 25 is fully down, and a spring loaded plunger'33 mounted on the toilet seat 25 preventing the said toilet seat 25 from assuming its fully down position unless the said toilet seat is occupied.
The toilet bowl 20 is of standard construction and, as best illustrated in Fig. 4, the said-toilet bowl 20 is provided with apertures 206, 201 and 208 to accommodate the jet vent unit 26, the watersupply line 230 and the vent closure valve 30 respectively.
.The jet vent unit 26 comprises a housing 34 preferably threaded into an interiorly threaded sleeve-35 cemented or otherwise secured in the aperture 206 provided in the bowl 20 above the flush passage 20| and drain chamber 203 thereof.
.The said housing 34 of the jet vent unit 26 is bored and counterbored axially to provide a formed in the said toilet seat 25.

The reciprocating valve member 2'! extends upwardly from the top of the housing 34 of the jet vent unit 26 through suitable guide nut 33, packing 39 and a gland nut .3. The said reciprocating valve member 2'! is spring loaded by a compression spring 41 engaging the reciprocating valve member at a shoulder 2100 provided just above the lower tapered end Eli] thereof and reacting against the bottom of the guide nut 38.
When the hinged toilet seat 25 is occupied and in its full Down position as shown in Fig. l, the spring loaded reciprocating valve member 2'? is engaged and lifted by an arm d2 rotatably mounted on the hinge rod 43 of the toilet seat 25 engaged by a pin it disposed through the said hinge rod 33 and through a slot 528 in the said arm 12, the said arm 42 being bifurcated at its outer end 5283 and positioned over a shouldered ferrule d5 threaded on the upper extending end of the said reciprocating valve member 21. The said ferrule 45 is fixed in its proper adjusted position by upper and lower lock nuts i5 and A l, the upper lock nut 46 serving as an abutment against which the bifurcated end 421 of the arm '42 reacts when lifting the valve member 21.
A suitable spring loaded plunger 33 mounted by screws 5:8 in the bottom of the forward end of the toilet seat 23 lifts the hinged toilet seat 25 about the hinge rod 53 when unoccupied to such an angle as will release the valve member 2'! of the jet vent unit 26 and shut off the primary jet 28 and the secondary jet 29 when the toilet is not in use, see Fig. 5. The toilet seat hinges 49 are of the usual construction, except that the toilet seat hinges 43 are rigidly pinned by pins 493 to the hinge rod 43, and the hinge rod 43 is rotatably mounted in the hinge rod support brackets 59. The toilet seat lid (not shown) is hinged to the hinge rod 43 by suitable hinge members 5! rotatably mounted thereon.
' The particular style of spring loaded plunger '33 shown in the drawings comprises an annular inwardly and outwardly flanged housing 52 secured by screws 48 to the bottom of the front of the toilet seat 25 over a circular recess 53 An inwardly and outwardly flanged annular reciprocating member 5 3 having an outwardly flanged plunger 33 reciprocatingly mounted therein is positioned in the inwardly and outwardly flanged annular housing 52, as best illustrated in Fig. 8, with a compression sprin 55 positioned within the plunger .33 reacting against the toilet seat at the bottom of the circular recess 53 therein. When the toilet seat 25 is occupied, the spring loaded plunger 83 assumes the position shown in Figs. 4 and 8. When the toilet seat 25 is un occupied, the spring loaded plunger 33 lifts the front end of the toilet seat 25 and causes it to assume a partially elevated position as indicated in Figs. 1 and 5.
The vent closure valve 30 comprises a tubular housing 56 having an external flange 565 therearound to position the said tubular housing in the aperture 298 formed in the horizontal floor 239 at the front of the flush passage 28! above the drain chamber 203 of the toilet bowl 213, the said aperture 258 being in alignment with and concentrically under the jet vent unit 26 whereby to cause the housing 53 of the vent closure valve 33 to serve as a jet eduction tube for the primary jet 28. When the shut-off valve 2? of the jet vent unit 26 is open, a spray of water from the primary jet 28 passes through the tubular housing 56 of the vent closure valve 39 which creates a negative pressure within the flush passage 2M of the toilet bowl 25, and, since the said flush passage 2M is connected by the aperture 209 to the flush down ring 202 which has flush holes 2E2!) therein, vitiated air is drawn from the receiving chamber 294 of the toilet bowl 2% when the toilet seat 25 is occupied due to the fact that occupancy of the toilet seat 25 opens the jet shut-off valve 27 of the vent unit 28 whereupon Water under pressure sprays forcibly from both the primary jet 28 and the secondary jet 29 of the said vent unit 23.
The said vent closure valve 30 is provided with a butterfly valve member 51 therein mounted on a turnable crank arm 53 journaled through the tubular housin 53. The said vent closure valve 3? is also provided with a jet target flap 31 mounted on the outside thereof on a turnable crank arm 59 journaled across one side of the tubular housing 56 parallel to the said crank arm 58. The outer ends of the crank arms 53 and 59 are linked together by means of a counterweight B3 journaled thereon, which counterweight 60 normally holds the butterfly valve member 5? of the vent closure valve 3!! closed by gravity action. However, when the toilet seat 25 is occupied, the shut-off valve 27 of the jet vent unit 26 is opened and water under pressure from the pressure water lines 23 and 23% passes through the jet vent unit 25 and out of the primary jet 28 and out of the secondary jet 29. The secondary jet 29 strikes the jet target flap 31 of the vent closure valve 39 and opens the butterfly valve member 57 which permits the primary jet 28 to discharge continuously through the tubular housing 56 of the said vent closure valve 33 serving as a jet eduction tube for withdrawing vitiated air from the receivin chamber 26% of the toilet bowl 223 as hereinbefore described.
If the toilet is flushed when occupied, the rush of flushing water from the toilet tank 2 3 strikes the jet target flap 3|, overcomes the pressure of the secondary jet 29 thereon, and closes the vent closure valve 38 during the flushing of the toilet, otherwise, the flushing water would pass down the vent closure valve 30, through the drain chamber 203 and into the drain 2! through the vent 22.
Thus, a jet type vented toilet embodying the invention is fully automatic and operates responsive to the occupation of the toilet seat. It employs standard plumbing and standard toilet bowl construction. It employs a combination dual jet vent unit wherein the primary jet functions to remove vitiated air from the occupied 'toilet and the secondary jet opens a normauy closed vent closure valve to permit the primary jet to function, and, if the toilet is flushed when occupied, the flushing water employed overcomes the effect of the secondary jet and closes the vent closure valve.
Although but one specific embodiment of the invention has been disclosed and described in detail, it is obvious that many changes may be made in the size, shape, arrangement and detail of the various elements of the invention without departin from the spirit and scope thereof as defined by the appended claims.
I claim: 1
1. A jet vent mechanism for toilets comprising, in combination, a jet vent unit and a vent closure valve disposed in spaced alignment with respect to the said jet vent unit, the said jet vent unit including a housing, a pressure water supply connected thereto, primary and secondary water jets and a valve normally shutting ofi the water supply from the said primary and secondary jets, and the vent closure valve including a tubular housing serving as a jet eduction tube, a pivoted gravity closed vent closure valve member disposed in the said jet eduction tube normally closing the same, a secondary jet target flap coupled with the said vent closure valve, the primary jet of the jet vent unit being directed through the said eduction tube causin a passage of air therethrough and the secondary jet being directed against the said secondary jet target flap of the vent closure valve whereby to open the said vent closure valve, and means for opening the said water supply valve to the said primary and secondary jets.
' 2. A jet vent mechanism for .toilets comprising, in combination, a jet vent unit and a vent closure valve disposed in spaced alignment with respect to the said jet vent unit, the said jet vent unit including a housing, a pressure water sup- ,ply connected thereto, primary and secondary water jets and a valve normally shutting ofi the water supply from the said primary and secondary jets, and the vent closure valve including a tubular-housing servin as a jet eduction tube, a pivoted vent closure valve member disposed in the said jet eduction tube, a counterweighted linkage connecting the said secondary jet target flap and the. pivoted vent closure valve member normally maintaining the vent closure valve closed, the primary jet of the jet vent unit being directed through the said eduction tube causing a passage of air therethrough and the secondary jet being directed against the said secondary jet target flap of the vent closure valve whereby to open the said vent closure valve, and means for opening the said water supply valve to the said primary and secondary jets.
3. In a toilet of the type having a toilet bowl including a receiving chamber and a drain chamber connected to a drain and the drain connected to a vent and wherein the toilet includes a flush passage connected to an apertured wash down ring disposed around the receiving chamber, jet vent mechanism comprising, in combination, a jet vent unit disposed in the flush passage and a vent closure valve disposed in spaced alignment with respect tothe said jet vent unit and connecting the flush passage and the drain chamber, the said jet vent unit including a housing, a
pressure water supply connected thereto, primary. and secondary water jets and a valve normally shuttin off the water supply from the said primary and secondaryjets, and the vent closure valve including atubular housing serving as a jet eduction tube, a pivoted gravity closed vent closure valve member disposed in .the said jet eduction tube normally closing the same, a secondary jet target flap coupled with the said vent closure valve, the primary jet of the jet vent unit being directed through the said eduction tube causing a passage of air therethrough and the secondary jet being directed against'the said secondary jet target flap of the vent closure valve whereby to open the said vent closure valve, and means for opening the said water suppy valve to the said primary and secondary jets.
4; In a toilet of the type having a toilet bowl including a receiving chamber and a drain chamber connected to a drain and the drain connected to a vent and wherein the toilet includes a flush tank and a flush passage connected from the flush tank to an apertured wash down ring disposed around the receiving chamber, jet vent mechanism comprising, in combination, a jet vent unit disposed in the flush passage and a vent closure valve disposedin spaced alignment with respect to the said jet vent unit and connecting the flush passage and the drain chamber, the said jet vent unit including a housing, a pressure water supply connected thereto, primary and secondary water jets and a valve normally shutting off the water supply from the said primary and secondary jets, and the vent closure valve including a tubular housing serving as a jet eduction tube, a pivoted gravity closed vent closure valve member disposed in thesaid jet eduction tube normally closing the same, a secondary jet target flap coupled with the said vent closure valve, the primary jet of the jet vent unit being directed through the said eduction tube causing a passage of air therethrough and the secondary jet being directed against the said secondary jet target flap of the vent closure valve whereby to open the said vent closure valve, the said secondary jet target flap being located to permit flush water from the flush tank passing through the flush passage to the Wash down ring to close the said vent closure valve during the flushing of the toilet, and means for opening the said water supply valve to the said primary'and secondary jets.
5. In a toilet of the type having a toilet bowl and a hinged toilet seat thereover, the said toilet including a receiving chamber and a drain chamber connected to a drain and the drain connected to a vent and wherein the toilet includes a flush tank and a flush passage connected fromthe flush tank to an apertured Wash down ring disposed around the receiving chamber, jet vent mechanism comprising, in combination, a jet vent unit disposed in the flush passage and a vent closure valve disposed in spaced alignment with respect to the said jet vent unit and connecting the flush passage and the drain chamber, the said jet vent including a housing, a pressure water supply con-' nected thereto, primary and secondary Water jets and a valve normally shutting ofi the water supply from the said primary-and secondary jets,
and the vent closurevalve including .a tubular housing serving as a jet eduction tube, a pivoted gravity closed vent closure valve member disposed in the said eduction tube normally closing the same, a secondary jet target flap coupled with the said vent closure valve, the primary jet of through and the, secondary jet being directed 7 against the said secondary jet target flap of the vent closure valve whereby to open the said vent closure valve, the said secondary jet target flap :being located to permit flush water from the flush tank passing through the flush passage to the wash down ring to close the said vent closure valve during the flushing of the toilet, spring loaded means preventing the toilet seat from assuming a horizontal position except when occupied, and a linkage between the hinged toilet seat and the said water supply valve for opening the said water supply valve to the said primary and secondary jets responsive to occupation of the toilet seat.

A jet vent mechanism for tank type flush toilets employing a hinged toilet seat comprising, in combination, a jet vent unit and a vent closure valve disposed in spaced alignment with respect to the said jet vent unit, the said jet vent unit including a housing, a pressure water supply connected thereto, primary and secondary Water jets and a valve normally Shutting off the water supply from the said primary and secondary jets, and the vent closure valve including a tubular housing serving as a jet eduction tube, a pivoted gravity closed vent closure valve member disposed in the said jet eduction tube normally closing the same, a secondary jet target flap located in the path of flush water through the toilet coupled with the said vent closure valve, the primary jet of the jet vent unit being directed through the said eduction tube causing a passage of air therethrough and the secondary jet being directed against the said secondary jet target flap of the vent closure valve whereby to open the said vent closure valve, and means operable responsive to occupying the toilet seat for opening the said water supply valve to the said primary and secondary jets, the flushing of the toilet when occupied causing fiush water passing through the toilet acting on the secondary jet target flap of the vent closure valve to overcome the secondary jet and close the said vent closure valve during flushing of the toilet when occupied.

In a toilet of the type having a toilet .bowl including a receiving chamber and a drain chamber connected to a drain and the drain connected to a vent and wherein the toilet includes a flush passage connected to an apertured wash down ring disposed around the receiving chamber, jet vent mechanism comprising, in combination, a jet vent unit disposed in the flush passage and a vent closure valve disposed in spaced alignment with respect to the said jet vent unit and connecting the flush passage and the drain chamber, the said jet vent unit including a housing, a pressure water supply connected thereto, primary and secondary water jets and a valve normally shutting ofi the water supply from the said primary and secondary jets, and the vent closure valve including a tubular housing serving as a jet eduction tube, a pivoted gravity closed vent closure valve member disposed in the said jet eduction tube normally closing the same, a secondary jet target flap pivotally mounted outside the said jet eduction tube, a counterweighted linkage connecting the said secondary jet target flap and the pivoted 4-- 8. In a toilet of the type having a toilet bowl including a receiving chamber and a drain chamber connected to a drainand the drain connected to a vent and wherein the toilet includes a flush tank and a flush passage connected from the flush tank to an apertured wash down ring disposed around the receiving chamber, .jet vent mechanism comprising, in combination, a jet vent unit disposed in the flush passage and a vent closure valve disposed in spaced alignment with respect to the said jet vent unit and connecting the flush passage and the drain chamber, the
said jet vent unit including a housing, a pressure water supply connected thereto, primary and secondary water jets and a valve normally shutting oiT the water supply from the said primary and secondary jets, and the ventclosure valve including a tubular housing serving as a jet eduction tube, a ivoted gravity closed vent closure valve member disposed in the said jet eduction tube normally closing the same, a secondary jet target iiap pivotally mounted outside the said jet eduction tube, a counterweighted linkage connecting the said secondary jet targetflap and the pivoted vent closure valve member normally maintaining the vent closure valve closed, the primary jet of the jet vent unit being directed through the said eduction tube causing a passage of air therethrough and the secondary jet being directed against the said secondary jet target flap of the vent closure valve whereby to open the said vent closure valve, the said secondary jet target flap being located to permitflush Water from the flush tank passing through the passage to the trash down ring to close the said vent closure valve during the flushingcf the toilet, and means for opening the said water supply valve to the said primary and secondar jets.
9. In a toilet of the type having a toilet bowl and a hinged toilet seat thereover, the said toilet including a receiving chamber and a drain chamber connected to a drain and the drain connected to a vent and wherein the toilet includes a flush tank and a flush passage connected from the flush tank to an apertured wash down ring disposed around the receiving chamber, jet vent mechanism comprising, in combination, a jet vent unit disposed in the flush passage and a vent closure valve disposed in spaced alignment with respect to the said jet vent unit and connecting the flush passage and the drain chamber, the said jet vent unit including a housing, a pressure water supply connected thereto, primary and secondary water jets and a valve normally shutting off the water supply from the said primary and secondar jets, and the vent closure valve including a tubular housing serving as a jet eduction tube, a pivoted gravity closed vent closure valve member disposed in the said eduction tube normally closing the same, a secondary jet target flap pivotally mounted outside the said jet eduction tube, a counterweighted linkage connecting the said secondary jet target fiap and the pivoted vent closure valve member normally maintaining the vent closure valve closed, the primary jet of the jet vent unit being directed through the said eduction tube causing a passage of air therethrough and the secondary jet being directed against the said secondary jet target flap of the vent closure valve whereb to open the said vent closure valve, the said secondary jet target flap being located to permit flush water from the flush tank passing through the flush passage to the Wash down ring to close the said vent closure valve during the flushing of the toilet, spring loaded means preventing the toilet nected thereto, primary and secondary water jets and a valve normally shutting ofi the water supply from the said primary and secondary jets, and the vent closure valve including a tubular housing serving as a jet eduction tube, a pivoted gravity closed vent closure valve member disposed in the said jet eduction tube normally closing the same, a secondary jet target flap located in the path of flush water through the toilet pivotally mounted outside the said jet eduction tube, a counterweighted linkage connecting the said secondary jet target flap and the pivoted vent closure valve member normally maintaining the vent closure valve closed, the primary jet of the jet vent unit being directed through the said eduction tube causing a passage of air therethrough and the secondary jet being directed against the said secondary jet target flap of the vent closure valve whereby to open the said vent closure valve, and means operable responsive to occupying the toilet seat for opening the said Water supply valve to the said primary and secondary jets, the flushing of the toilet when occupied causing flush water I passing through the toilet acting on the secondary jet target flap of the vent closure valve to overcome the secondary jet and close the said vent closure valve during flushing of the toilet when occupied.
