Description
E. P. GOODRIGH.
OAR- COUPLING.
(N0 Modem Patented Jan! 24, 18 8 2.
W'Z T .NESSMS' PATENT esters.
EDWARD P. GOODRIOH, OF YPSILANTI, MICHIGAN.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 252,602, dated January 24;, 1882.
Application filed August 17, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD I. Goonnron, of Ypsilanti, in the county of Washtenaw and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar-Couplings;
and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view, Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view, and Fig. 3 is a detail view, of the coupling-hook detached.
Corresponding parts in' the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to car-couplings; and itconsists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents the draw-head, which is provided in its upper side with a longitudinal slot, 13. The mouth or recess 0 of the draw-head, which is adapted to receive an ordinary coup'ing-link, D, is formed near its upper front end with a nearly triangular recess, E. At the rear end of the mouth 0 is formed achamber,F,the top of which has a downward-extending tongue or abutment, G, while at the front end of the bottom'of said chamber a shoulder, H, is formed.
I is the coupling-hook, which consists of a stem or shank, J, having the hook K, the front end of which is beveled, as at L, so as to fit in the recess E, above referred. to. end the stem J has an upward-projecting stud or hook, M, adapted tocnter the chamber F and bear against the abutment G, while the stem rests upon theshoulder H.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood. When the cars come together the link which has been previously adjusted in one draw-head enters that of the adjoining car. thus pushing the coupling-hook back until its front end is disengaged from the recess l l, when it may swing upward, so as to engage thelink. When the cars are in motion the coupling-hook is pulled forward in the draw-head until the point L and stud M bear respectively in the recess E and against the abutment G, thus dividing the strain evenly and preventing accidental uncoupling.
This device is simple, durable, inexpensive, effective. It couples automatically, and may be easily and convenientlymanipulated in the act of uncouplin Itis easily applied to care now in use, and may, when necessary, be used with the ordinary pin and link.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. The combination, with the draw-head A, having flaring mouth 0, recess E, and chamber F, of the g'avit-y coupling-hook I, having hooks K M and beveled nose or point L, as described, for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with the draw-head A, having flaring mouth 0, recesses E F, abutment G, and shoulder H, of the herein-described removable gravity coupling-hook I, as and for the purpose shown and specified.
3. In a car-coupling, the combination, with the draw-head, of a longitudinally-sliding detachable coupling-hook, as. herein described, for the purpose set forth. At its rear In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I hate hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
E DWVARD P. GOODRICH.
I Witnesses:
EDWARD P. ALLEN, WALTER BARLOW.
