This invention relates to a receptacle closure.
The general object of the invention is to provide an improved receptacle closure for use on receptacles such as bottles and jars and wherein the closure is of such a nature that it permits a fresh medicinal solution to be prepared by operation of parts of the closure;
A more specific object of the invention i to provide a receptacle closure including an inner and an outer member and wherein the inner member carries a distendable diaphragm which is adapted to be moved by pressure of the outer closure member to cause release of a tablet.
Another object of the invention is to provide a receptacle closure including a novel form of cap member wherein a flexible body has a stiff portion thereon which provides for quick preparation of a fresh solution.
Other objects and the advantages of my invention will be apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. l is a central, sectional view showin a receptacle closure embodying the features of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing the closure in another position, and
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary section taken on line 33, Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing by reference characters, I have shown my invention as embodied in a receptacle closure which is indicated generally at Ill. As shown the closure is arranged on a receptacle which includes a body having a neck II and having an outwardly directed groove 12 in the neck.
My closure, as shown, consists of an inner member, indicated generally at I3, and an outer member, indicated generally at l 4. The inner member includes a flanged sleeve l5 which rests upon the end of a flange l 6 on the container neck. A sealing band, which may be made of metal or plastic, is indicated at ll. The band ll engages the sleeve [5 and the flange IE to hold the inner member 13 in place.
The outer member includes a body 2|], having a downwardly directed skirt 2| and having an enlarged flange 22 at the lower end of the skirt. The flange 22 is removably received in the groove 12 previously described so that normally the parts occupy the position shown in Fig. 1. The body 20 is preferably made of a good grade of soft rubber and includes a depending, integral, tapering stem member 24 which is made of rubber which cures harder than the rubber of which the body 29 is 1 eel (01. 128-272) made so that themember 24 does notflex readily and therefore does not bend when the closure is operated as will be later described.
The inner member sleeve l5 includes a loose diaphragm 3B which is molded in corrugated form with the corrugations concentrically arranged as at 3|. The diaphragm normally assumes the position shown in Fig. 1, with the corrugations in their compact form and they are so vulcanized. The diaphragm is soft and may be distended to the position shown in Fig. 2 by pressure of the stem 24.
The inner member [3 is preferably made of a good grade of rubber and includes an axial cavity 32 which communicates with a reduced cavity 33, coaxial with the cavity 32. The diaphragm 3!] serves as the upper closure for the cavity 33 and in this cavity 33 I arrange a medicinal tablet 34. In the cavity 32 I arrange a displaceable sealing disc 35. The disc may be made of composition impervious to the contents of the receptacle H).
In use the parts are assembled as shown in Fig. 1, with a vehicle for the tablet 34 in the receptacle. To prepare and use the solution, the operator presses on the body 20 so that the stem member 24 distends the diaphragm by straightening out the corrugations thereof, and pressure of the diaphragm pushes the tablet 34 towards the disc seal 35 to dislodge the seal 35 and free the tablet, which may contain any suitable drug or preparation. Thus the tablet is discharged into the vehicle 36 and a fresh solution is prepared.
To use the solution the operator removes the cap I4 by stretching the flange 22 and thereafter a hypodermic needle is inserted through the diaphragm 30 and a sufiicient amount of the contents is removed to meet the needs of the operator.
The diaphragm 35 is inert in the solution.
In the present application, Ser. 4,193, filed J an-- uary 24, 1948, the claim is directed to the closure which includes a corrugated diaphragm engageable by a releasin stem carried .by an auxiliary closure.
In applicants copending application Ser. No. 791,429, filed December 12, 1947, the claims are directed to a main and an auxiliary closure, with a flanged piercing member extendin through a hole in the auxiliary closure and movable with the auxiliary closure to displace a sealing disc carried by the main closure.
In copending application Ser. No. 791,428, filed December 12, 1947, the claims are directed to a tubular disc displacing member wherein the tube.
3 is provided with a flange which is arranged within the auxiliary closure.
In copending application Ser. No. 4,089, filed January 24, 1948, the claim is directed to the main and outer closures, wherein the main closure includes a cupped diaphragm portion and the outer closure includes a stem which engages the cupped portion to cause release of a sealing disc.
From the foregoing description it will be apparent that I have invented a novel receptacle closure which is highly efficient for its intended purpose.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
A closure comprising a main body portion and a flexible auxiliary closure portion, said main body portion having a flange adapted to engage the neck of a bottle, said body portion having a sleeve portion adapted to fit Within a bottle neck. said sleeve portion having an axial recess, a sealing disc closing said recess, a medicinal tablet in said recess, and a diaphragm closing the inner end of the recess, said diaphragm having a cor- 4 rugation formed therein, said auxiliary closure including a body having a skirt thereon, said last mentioned skirt engaging the periphery of said body portion, said auxiliary closure having an inwardly directed integral seal releasing stem adapted to engage and push said diaphragm to disc releasing position.
