UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM B. WHITE, OF NEOGA, ILLINOIS.
SLIDING AND swmeme GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of" Letters Patent No. 252,343, dated. January 17,1852.
7 Application filed May 11, 1881 (Model) To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. WHITE, of Neoga, Cumberland county, Illinois, have invented an Improvement in Sliding and Swinging Gates, of which the following is the specification.
Myinvention is a gate constructed, as fully described hereinafter, so as to secure the requisite operations with little exertion by theoperator, and by the use of simple appliances.
In the accompanying drawings the figure is a side elevation of my improved gate.
A A are the gate-posts on either side of the D is a block of wood at the base of the post A. At the top of the post A is an arm,,e, the projecting end of which is perforated, to receive a trunnion, a, on the upper end of a turn-post, h, the other end of saidpost h having a similar trunnion fitting a bearing in the block D, so thatsaid post canbe easily revolved. The post h is di\'ided so as to receive between its sides a sliding gate, 13. Through the post h passes transversely a shaft, b, car- Tying a grooved pulley, K, and provided with a crank-handle; and a bar, H, is secured tothe turn-post h, constituting a rail on which rest rollers s s at the sides of the end bars of the gate, which gate may travel on the rail, as shown, a rope or chaimp, being fastened to the gate at a; w, and passing round the roller K. When the crank is turned the roller turns with it, and thus causes the gate to travel through the turn-post, the heaviest gates be ing thus moved readily and easily. then the gate is moved away from the post A the turnpost It and gate may be revolved to bring the gate at right angles to the position it tirstoc- 'cupied, leaving the roadway clear.
A roller, d, may be placed in a bracket beneath the gate to support it at any point of its length until it occupies a position central with the turn-post, when it will be away t'roun the roller.
I claim The combination of the divided turn-post h,
supported adjacentto a post, A, with a gate,
'irovidcd with rollers s s restin on a rail H secured to the turn-post, and a roller, K, on a crank-shaft, and cord 19, all as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM RICHARD WHITE.
