Filed Jun 7, 1947 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 /5' /5 7 Fiji1 7 /9 2/ H MN 25 INVENTOR ERNE8'T A. OYERSTEDT ATTORNEY Patented Sept. 12, 1950 UNITED s r The invention pertains to an adjustabletable and more particularlyto a portable tablewhich can be conveniently folded or set up andtilted at various angles for use by artists, draftsmen,
for display and other purposes, and-which is an improvement over that disclosed in my prior U. S. Patent No. 1,524,630 issued Janyz'l, 1925.
It is an object of my invention to provide a compact light weight table, of simple construction, which can be quickly and conveniently folded for transportation or. set up for use.
It is also an object of my invention to provide an adjustable tilting table which can be con-' veniently adjusted to tilt at any angular position, as desired, for use as a drafting table, an artist's desk, as a display device, or for like purposes, and which is'firmly or rigidly supported in any such tilted position. i
It is a further object of my invention to provide such an adjustable tilting table which provides convenient knee space for the artists, draftsmen or other users-of the table.
of alowerfcross-piece l5. extendinghorizontally between the lc sxat a lower position andan upper -horizontal cross-piece! 1 extending across and; securedon the tops, or upper ends, of the table legs.' The ends. of the; lower cross-piece may be, securedtothetwo legs I! and 13, as; by
Woodgscrew s lll, and these legs are preferablyprovidedswithshallowmortices 2| to facilitate assembly and,llOpDIQVidB-a/IHQIB rigid joint with the lower crossypiece. :The upper cross-piece l1 sssecured firmly upon-the-upPQrends fthelegs, asby counter sunlrwood'screws 23.
vThe two ,table; leg sections A and B, are Dive otall v secureidvtogether along the rear legs, as byibutthinges .25 secured across the rear sides of .thezrear legs, and the sectionscan be quickly foldedtogether-asshown dotted in Fig. 5,101 transport tion; or to or p n d to provide ,a rigid stand of a V-formation.
Further objects and advantages are within the scope of my invention, such as relate to the arrangement, operation and function of the related elements of the structure, to various details of construction and to combinations of parts, elements per se, and to economies of manufacture and numerous other features, as will be apparent from a consideration of the specification in conjunction with the'drawing disclosing specific embodiments of the invention, in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view showing the adjustable table set up and various tilted positions of the table top being shown dotted;
Fig. 2 is a plan View of the table set up and a portion of the top being broken away;
Fig. 3 is a front view of the table;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary rear view showing the tilting support means;
Fig. 5 is a plan view showing the table top and the support member turned adjacent one of the leg sections, and in dotted lines representing the other leg section folded adjacent thereto, as for transportation; and
Fig. 6 is an enlarged fragmentary rear view showin a different embodiment of tilting support means.
Referring more specifically to Figs. 1 through 5 of the drawing, it will be seen that two table leg sections A and B are provided to support my adjustable table and that each of these sections comprises a vertical front table leg H and a vertical rear table leg I3. These two legs are secured together, in a spaced relation, by means A ifront-i blesul port member .21 is provided which is-zpivotany securedat oneend on tOPxOf the, extended front endofthe-top cross-piece on. l g section A; as by a holttt pass ng. therethrou h to a wing nut 3| on the bottom. This table support member 2! is turned over the front end of the other section B and a bolt 33 carried by it passes into a slot 35 in the extended front end of the top cross-piece l1 on this other section B, where it is secured by a win nut 37 easily turned on the lower end of the bolt. This front table support member 21 is of substantial width and it is of a trough-like cross-section, as may be seen in Fig. 1, to provide a tray for pens, pencils, brushes, crayons or other tools or supplies for artists, draftsmen or like artisans. The table top 39 to be tiltably supported is pivotally attached along the rear edge of this front support member 21, as by hinges 4|, and this table top may be a suitable board provided with a conventional parallel moving straight edge 43 so that the table may be used as a drafting table, as well as for otherv purposes.
The table top 39 is adjustably supported by a tilting bar 45 which is pivotally connected to the underside of the rear portion of the top, as by a hinge 41, and it extends down along the rear side of the rear table legs. The two top crosspieces have extensions 49 projecting to the rear of the rear legs and so out as to provide a space or slot 5! through which the tilting bar passes. As may be seen more clearly in Fig. 4, these rear extensions 48 are provided with aligned holes 53 into which a pin 55 may be easily passed to secure the tilting bar in any selected position by utilizing any one of a plurality of pin receiving I 3 holes 51 provided in this bar. Fig. 6 shows an alternative arrangement which avoids the necessity of pulling out and reinserting a, pin in various holes. This is accomplished by providing the holes 5'! in the tilting bar with individual pins 59, permanently installed therein. The rear extensions 49 are then provided with open grooves 6| in the upper surfaces for receiving the ends of any selected one of the pins 59 seated therein. In this manner the table inclination may be quickly and conveniently adjusted to tilt at various angles to suit its utilization for various purposes such as for drafting, drawin painting or display purposes. The distance of the rear legs to the rear of the front legs remains constant in all tilted positions of the table, and it is sufficient to firmly and rigidly support the table in all such positions. The space under the table and between the two front table legs is commodious and ample for the knees of the user of the table who may be seated upon an ordinary chair pulled up to the front of the table.
' To fold the table, as for transportation or storage, it is only necessary to unlatch the rear tilting bar and loosen the wing nut 31 on the bolt 33 in the right hand end of the front table support member. The bolt 33 is then convenientlyremoved from the slot 35 in the front end ofthe right-hand top cross-piece. support member 21 is then turned counter-clock- Wise until it is over the top of and parallel to the upper cross-piece, of leg section A, as shown in Fig. 5, and the table top 39 is then dropped down along the side of the left hand leg section A. The right hand leg section B is then turned, to a position adjacent to and side-by-side with the left-hand leg section A, as represented by dotted lines in Fig. 5. In this compact folded condition, the'table may be very conveniently transported or stored.
It will be seen that I have provided an adjustable table of a simple light-weight structure which may be very conveniently folded or set up, which may be quickly and conveniently adjusted The front to tilt at various angular positions, which is firmly supported in any tilted position, which provides a convenient tray for pencils, pens, etc., and which affords ample knee space for the user.
It is apparent that within the scope of my invention modifications and different arrangements may be made other than herein disclosed, and the present disclosure is illustrative merely, the invention comprehending various thereof.
What is claimed as the invention is:
In an adjustable folding work table comprising a pair of supporting leg sections hinged together at the rear, each containing front and rear legs and forwardly-extending cross-pieces connecting the legs, the combination of a tablesupport member resting upon the two forwardlyextending cross-pieces at the front and detachably mounted at each end upon vertical pivots extending up from the two cross-pieces so as to turn upon either cross-piece, the table-support member being troughed, a table top being hinged along the rear side of the table-support member to swing in a half-circle back of its support, whereby the table-support member forms a horizontal receptacle in any position of the table top.
