4 Claims.
This invention relates to an advertising display structure or poster panel, commonly called a billboard, and has for its object the provision of an advertising display structure in which the display panel may be shifted about pivots on the poster panel frame for the purpose of replacing the poster thereon.
A further object of the invention is to provide a poster panel with a panel thereon which may be easily and simply constructed and which may, without the use of any special tools or equipment, be shifted into an accessible position substantially in the plane of the poster panel to facilitate the replacement of the poster upon the poster panel.
Another object of the invention is to provide a. poster panel uponwhich the removable display panel may be swung from display position into servicing position without requiring any substantial clearance about the poster paneL.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a poster panel in which the removable display panel cannot only be lowered from its display position to a servicing position convenient to the ground, but in which the display panel itself may be detached from the frame on which it is supported and carried away from the poster panel for servicing or for replacement.
The display panel mounted upon a poster panel is designed to display an advertisement or poster when in the display position adjacent the poster panel. The display material exposed upon the display panel is usually temporary in character andis replaced either by painting the desired display upon the display panel or securing to it, by means of adhesive or other means of attachment, printed or lithographed advertising material. are mounted upon the display panel.
In order to paint the display panel or to apply prepared posters or other displays thereto, some scaffolding or other means of access was necessary in order to reach the display panel while it remained in the display position as the display panel was conventionally an integral and sta-- tionary part of the poster panel structure and Occasionally three-dimensional displays which the poster panel was mounted or the lack poi license to approach the panel except in its display panel can be easily swung from its display position to its servicing position and the operator can then stand conveniently close to the display panel and reach its entire area for removal of the .:.discarded display and its replacement by means of a new poster. When the display panel is swung into the servicing position, practically all of its area is within reach of the attendant.
When the display panel is brought into its servicing position, not only is the work upon the display panel facilitated but the danger of splashing adhesive or paint upon the border of the poster panel is obviated. This enables the display panel to be repeatedly recovered with new ndlsplays without requiring the simultaneous renewal or refinishing of the border.
These and other features of the invention will be seen from. the following detailed specification read in connection with the accompanying drawwings forming part thereof and in which Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a poster panel with the display panel in display position and the operating mechanism disclosed in broken lines;
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the poster panel ..,shown in Fig. 1 with the poster panel swung into mounted at some height above the ground order to display the display panel most advantageously.
Both because of the size of the display panels and the large posters used thereon, the problem of applying the posters or other displays to the display panel while in display position was accompanied. with considerable difficulty. Even with the use of scaifolding and long handled brushes, the problem was one of some difficulty because of the lack of accessibility of the display panel.
Similarly, when either paint or adhesive was applied to the display panel, the splashing of the paint or adhesive smeared and disfigured the border of the display panel. Another problem that frequently arose in the use of display panels of this character because of the limited space in about the border.
servicing position;
Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the poster panel showing the framework and operating mechanism;
Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line 4-41 of Fig. 3 of the poster panel of this invention;
Fig. 5 is a section of the poster panel of this invention taken on the line 55 of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings the poster panel H is of conventional construction attached to the side or top of a building or supported on the ground by suitable supports (not shown). The poster panel is formed of the border l2 which may be suitably flanged by the turned in flange l 3 Within the border I2 is the display panel I5 upon which a poster bearing an advertising display or message is applied by means of suitable adhesives or other attaching means.
The display panel l5 has suitable frame members shown in the illustrative representation herein as the vertical members It secured to the display panel. The poster panel framework includes suitable frame members such as the vertical beams l1 joined to horizontal beams l8.
-I'Ihe arrangement, size and number of these which swing on the stationary pivotsZll, as best shown in comparison. of the structures :of Figs. 1 and 2. J The stationary pivotsr arezperpendicw.
lar to the plane of the poster panel so that the arms [9 swing in a plane parallel to the plane of the poster panel.
Suitable counterweights 2| may be mounted upon the free ends of the framework'of-the dis:
- bodiment of the invention, it is to be underplay panel to facilitate the movement of the display panel. Secured to the frame upon which the display panel moves is the handle 22 which may be reached through an access door M in the border l2 of the poster panel. 44 is not necessary except where the poster panel is securedtosthewall of a building or is otherwise so mounted that access to the rear ofthe poster panel; is diificultu;
In-the: preferred embodiment of the invention This access door shown initheaccompanying drawings, the-dis- I play panel isshown as constructed upon the,
paneL-removed-from the poster panel structure. I
This is particularly important where it'is desired to parry the display panel away :from its location forrservicingi-or the replacement of'the display thereon.
In orderto protect-the display panel against unnecessary flow of water'from theborder l2- thereover, the border of the poster panel may-befitted: with t-he-.eave-23. which may be provided" as shown in Fig-.5 tozprotect the display panel.
Obviously, the proportions-and dimensions'of thovar-ious structural elements and thelocation and :size and weights of the counterweights can i be modifiedpover a wide rangeand the-number andploeation of the pivoted arm members shown in the :several modifications of'theinventiontmay be varied in number, size and form.-
Method of operation In order to service the displaypanel. !5 it is onlynecessary to swing :the display panel. upon itspivotedarmsl 9 from its display position within the border I2 of the poster panel structure: into thejservicingi position shown in Fig. 2. when the display panel-is brought beneath the-posterpanel structure but in. substantially the-same plane asit occupied when in display position.
In [the servicing positionthe entire area of the displaypanel i5.-is readily accessible. to the. operator andthe possibility of soiling or defacing theiborder i2 is greatly reduced by virtueof the fact.thatthe display panel l5 stands in front of the, lower portion of the-border l2 andprotects 1 itagainst dripping adhesives or paint.
stoodthat'it is capable of many modifications. Changes, therefore; in the construction and arrangement may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as disclosed in the appended claims, in which it is intended to claim all novelty inherent in the invention as broadly aspermissible, in view of the prior art.
