ATTORNEYS.
line a 00 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
METHOD OF LOCKING NUTS UPON BOLTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 252,186, dated January 10, 1882.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT R. CLARK, of Amite City, in the parish of Tangipahoa and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and Improved Nut-Lock and Method of Applying the Sam'e,of which thefollowingisa full, clear, and exact description.
Reference. is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification,
in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of my improved nut-lock as it appears when locked in place. Fig. 2 is asectional elevation taken on of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the locking-ring.
Arepresents the bolt; B, the nut; and C, the locking-ring, which is of some soft metal.
In applying the ring the nut is first screwed up to place and then the threaded portion of the bolt is flattened near the nut, as shown at c, by filing or otherwise. Then by means of a suitable mold thelocking-ring of yellow metal, Babbitt metal, zinc or pewter, or other soft and easily-fusible metal is cast around the bolt, so as to rest in the flattened portion of the bolt.
Application filed October 18, 1881. (No model.)
Instead of casting the locking-ring upon the separately and as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The method herein described of locking nuts upon screw-bolts, consisting in first flattening one side of the bolt near the face of the nut and then casting a metal ring around the bolt, so that a portion of the ring will rest in the flattened portion of the bolt, substantially as described.
ALBERT RIC HARD CLARK.
