UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD P. HAFF, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
POCKET TAPE-M EASURE.
SPECIFIGATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 252,101, dated January 10, 1882,
i Application filed August16, 1881. (N0 model.)
.To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD P. HAFF, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pocket Tape-Measures and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to that class of tapemeasures which comprise a circular case, an interior spring, and a tape-measure connected with the spring in such manner as to be retracted within the case and aboutthe spring when not in use.
The object of the invention is to primarily fit the case of the measure to serve also as a mirror; and to this end the invention consists in making one plane wall or the cover of the case of looking-glass; and in special features of construction whereby the silvered surface of the looking-glass is protected from injury by the moving parts, as hereinafter explained and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved article, showing the mirror-face and the central peripheral depression of the sheet-metal portion of the case by which an inner shoulder is formed for the support of the glass. Fig. 2 is a central axial section.
In both these figures provision is shown for the insertion of pins, making the article to serve also as a pin-cushion; but this feature is incidental.
A is a sheet-metal part of the case, spun from a plane disk to form one plane side and the periphery of the case.
A is an annular depression spun into'the peripheral portion of the metal part A, thereby forming an inner shoulder, a, which serves to support the mirror B through the interposed disk E, with or withoutan additional interposed part. 7
0 is the tape-measure, mounted and operating in the usual manner in connection with a back, which, by its somewhat yielding support,
lessens the danger of breaking the glass when the latter is secured in place, said glass being fastened and held by the margin to of the metal part A, which is turned downward and inward over the edge of the glass, as plainly shown in Fig. 2. The paper ring F and the central space within the same are in this instance shown as being utilized as a pin-holder, suitable apertures being made in the metal periphery opposite said ring to admit the pins F. The m rror B may, however, rest directly upon the disk E, ifpreferred, and said ring F,with other provision for pins, may be dispensed with.
I claim as my iuvention-- The combination, in pocket tape-measure, ot' the spun sheetanetal case A, provided with the interior shoulder, a, the looking-glass B, forming the cover of the case and secured by the inturued edge a of the metal part A, the moving parts contained below the shoulder a, and the disk E, interposed between the looking-glass and the moving parts, said disk resting upon the shouldera and supporting and protecting the looking-glass, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my inventionI affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ED WA RD P. HAFF.
