(c1.2 94) This invention relates to gun supports adapt able to be mounted on hunting jackets or the like for use by the hunter to support a gun as the hunter is walking through a field or standing.

It is a general object of the invention to provide an improved gunsu-pport of cheap and simple construction which canbe attached as to a hunting jacket and which can be collapsed against the jacket when it is not desired. to use the same, and which can be extended from the jacket to receive and support the butt of a gun as a hunter stands or walks through a field and permits the holding of the gun in such a position that the gun can be readilyswung down for instantaneous shooting as game appears,

A more detailed object is to provide such a gun support which includes a platewhich can be hingedly connected as to a hunting jacket and webs of flexible material attached to the side edges of the plate and attachable also to the hunting jacket which will limit outward extension of the plate from the jacket.

These and other objects and advantagesof my invention will more fully appear from the following description made in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein like reference characters refer to the same or similar parts throughout the different views, and in which Fig. 1 is a view showing a hunter wearing a hunting jacket incorporating therein a gun support of the present invention, the gun support being shown in extended position to take the butt end of a gun and two positions of the gun being shown in dotted and full lines respectively;

Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken through the pocket portion of the hunting jacket and through the gun support showing the gun support in upright collapsed position;

Fig. 3 is a similar view to Fig. 2 but showing the gun support in outwardly extended position; and

Fig. 4 is a view looking downwardly from above the structure as shown in Fig. 3.

There is shown a hunter wearing a hunting jacket A equipped with a pocket B which may be at times closed by a flap C, this flap being equipped with a half snap fastener 5 adapted to cooperatively engage a half snap fastener 8 secured to the upper portion of the exterior part of the pocket B. The hunter is shown as carrying a gun D.

In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a hinge I, one section of which is secured as by rivets 8 to the exterior side of the pocket 3 adjacent the lower portion of the pocket. Con i e i tha th unter, i Wea i the jacket A when the gun D is being carried, if the gun is to be carried in the hands without being supported at its lower end or is to be carried on the shoulder the plate it may be swung to upright position as shown in Fig. 2 and the half snap fastener 13 may be engaged with the half snap fastener 6 to hold it out of the way in the upright position. As the plate It is collapsed upwardly the flexible webs I2 will fold up in pleats so that the gun support will be completely out of the way of the hunter and the pocket B can be used in the usual manner. If it is desired to support the gun in such a manner that the weight of the gun is not carried entirel by the arms of the hunter the half snap fastener it may be disengaged from the half snap fastener 8 and the plate H3 may then be swung downwardly to substantially a horizontal position as is indicated in Figs. 1, 3, and l, whereupon the butt end of the gun may be placed between the two webs l2 to rest on the plate It which, of course, now projects forwardly from the pocket B. As the hunter goes through the field the gun may be carried as indicated in dotted lines in Fig, 1 and held merely by one hand of the hunter and the weight of the gun will be taken principally by the hunting jacket A so that the weight of the gun is carried principally by the shoulders of the hunter. As game appears the gun can be quickl swung down from the dotted line position to a shooting position without changing the 3 position of the hand of the hunter holding the gun and the other hand can be brought into engagement with the forepiece of the gun as the gun is brought up to the shoulder so that no delay is experienced by the hunter in bringing the gun to bear on the game.

While the gun support is particularly adapted for use in field shooting it is also adaptable for use in marsh shooting of ducks and other game. Attention should be called to the fact that the gun support, when the gun is carried thereby, has considerable value to prevent injur to human life through the accidental discharge of the gun. By reason of the fact that the gun is supported well above the point Where it can readily catch on brush, stalks and weeds, there is very little likelihood of the accidental discharge of the gun. However, if for any reason the gun should accidentally discharge or if the hunter should trip and fall and discharge the gun, the muzzle of the gun will be well above the head of the hunter so that no injury is likely to result. Also, the gun is carried by the support in a position that it cannot point toward other hunters in the immediate vicinity.

The purpose in making the plate [0 perforated is to permit the drainage of water through the plate in case of rain and at the same time to lighten the plate. In some instances it may be desirable to eliminate the hinge entirely and employ the side webs [2 alone for supporting the plate.

It will, of course, be understood that various changes may be made in the form, details, arrangement, and proportions of the various parts without departure from the scope of the present invention, which, generally stated, consists in the matter shown, and described, and set forth in the appended claims.

What I claim is:

1. A gun support comprising a hinge adaptable to be mounted at the lower portion of a hunting jacket, a plate secured to one section of said hinge for swinging movement from an upright position lying against the jacket to a substantially horizontal position extending outwardly from the jacket and side webs of flexible material attached to the side edges of said plate and adapted to be attached to the jacket above said hinge and collapsible with said plate as it is swung from outwardly extended position to upright position, said webs limiting the outward swinging movement of the plate and forming side walls for the plate when in outwardly extended position to cooperate with the plate and form therewith a three-wall support for a gun butt.

2. The structure defined in claim 1, a half snap fastener carried by said plate at the inner side of its swinging end and a cooperating half snap fastener adapted to be mounted on the jacket above said hinge.

3. In a hunting jacket having a pocket at the front thereof, a gun support carried by said pocket, said gun support comprising a plate hingedly connected at its lower end to the lower portion of said pocket at the exterior side thereof for swinging movement from an upright position lying against the pocket to an outwardly extending position projecting from the pocket, and side webs of flexible material attached to the side edges of said plate and also attached to the exterior side of said pocket above said hinge, said side webs limiting the outward extension of said plate, being collapsible as said plate is moved from an outwardly extending position to upright position and cooperating with said plate to form a three-wall support for a gun butt.
