The invention pertains to bobbin winding machines of the type disclosed and claimed in Patent No. 2,439,519 issued to Brooks Marcellus on application Serial No. 527,702, filed March 23, 1944, and has particular reference to improved bunch building mechanism.
In the bobbin winding machine disclosed in the aforesaid Marcellus application, the main traverse mechanism for the yarn being wound comprises a generally cylindrical cam mounted on the axis of the bobbin and movable on such axis during the winding operation, the yarn being reciprocated by the cam in the rotation of the bobbin and simultaneously carried along the bobbin in a builder motion so as to produce filling wound bobbins. At the end of one winding cycle, the cam is moved to a retracted position rearwardly of the butt end of the bobbin and at the beginning of the succeeding winding cycle the cam is advanced from its said retracted position into operative association with a running strand of yarn secured to the butt end of the bobbin. The primary object of the invention is to provide a bunch building mechanism having an auxiliary traversing guide operative during the advance of the main traversing cam from such retracted position.
A further object is to provide a bunch building mechanism of the character set forth having actuating mechanism including driving and driven members disposed in operative relation to each other only during such initial advance of the main traversing cam from its retracted position.
Another object is to provide a bunch building mechanism in which the yarn guiding element which reciprocates axially of the bobbin adjacent the butt end thereof is uniformly brought to rest .at the rear end of the bunch so that in the operation of winding a bunch preliminary to the succeeding cycle the traversing movement begins adjacent the butt or head end of the bobbin.
Still another object is to provide a bunch building mechanism capable of easy adjustment to vary the length of the bunch axially of the bobbin.
The objects of the invention thus generally set forth, together with other and ancillary advantages, are attained by the construction and arrangement shown by way of illustration in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevational view of the improved bunch building mechanism in a bobbin winding machine of the character set forth in said Marcellus application, a portion of the machine frame being broken away and shown in section to illustrate a pertinent part of the drive mechanism.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary side elevational View of the bunch building mechanism on a somewhat larger scale and illustrating the traversing guide in difierent positions.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary front elevational View on a reduced scale.
The improved bunch building mechanism is shown for purposes of illustration as incorporated in a bobbin winding machine having a main frame 1 in which is rotatably supported a winding spindle equipped with a chuck 8 for gripping the butt end of the bobbin b, the tip end being supported by a centering slide 9. The running strand being wound is indicated at a. It extends from an elevated source, not shown, through a tensioning means generally designated IE] and around guide rods 11 and 12 downwardly to the winding mechanism, the free end of the yarn being fastened at the butt end'of the bobbin within the chuck 8. The yarn is traversed during the winding operation by means of a cam 13 generally cylindrical in form and mounted for rotation in a slide 14 supported in the frame '1 for movement in a direction axially of the bobbin. Unidirectional rotational movement is imparted to the cam during such advancing movement, the cam being provided with strand engaging cam surfaces 15 operative to effect the reciprocation of the strand during the advance of the cam axially of the bobbin.
The means for rotating the cam 13 and for imparting axial endwise movements thereto may be of the character disclosed in said Marcellus application and since it forms no part of the present invention it is not herein disclosed in detail. However, I have shown in Fig. l a portion of the means for advancin' the slide 16 and thereby the cam 13. For this purpose, the rear end of the slide is equipped with a rack bar 56 meshing with a pinion 1'1 on a shaft 18, the arrangement being such that upon the completion of one winding cycle the slide is retracted into the position shown in Fig. 1 and then advanced preliminary to the next winding cycle into operative association with the running strand (Fig. 2).
The improved bunch building mechanism is arranged for operation during such advance of the slide from the position shown in Fig. 1 to that shown in Fig. 2. It comprises in general an .or cam member 25.
3 auxiliary traversing guide l9 and an actuatin mechanism therefor having a portion including a driving member mounted on the main frame I and another portion including a driven member mounted on the slide with the two members operatively associated only during the preliminary advancing movement of the slide, the driven member moving with the slide out of range of the driving member during operation of the main traversing cam in its performance of the main winding cycle.
The guide member [9 is herein in the form of a pin carried by the free or lower end of an arm 26 supported for swinging movement. The arm is of substantial length so that the guide moves through a generally horizontal arc adjacent the butt end of the bobbin andimmediatelyabove a notched guide plate 2! carried by theslide and engageable by the strand in its passage to the bobbin. As shown, the arm 28 is pivotally mounted on a pivot stud 22 on the forwardly projecting portion of an L-shaped bracket 23 rigid with the "slide U2 (see Figs. 2 and 3). At its upper end the arm 21; has rigid therewith a second arm 25 carrying a downwardly and rearwa'r'dl y inclined cam member 25. This member constitutes the driven member of the actuating mechanism.
The driving member of the actuating mechanism is in the form of abell crank 26 pivotally mounted upon a bracket 2'5 carried by the main frame of the machine. The bell crank 28 has a rearwardly extending arm 28 carrying a pin 29 projecting laterally into overlying relationto the :cam member 25, and a depending arm 36 connected by a link 3| to a drive means generally designated 32 whereby reciprocatory motion is imparted to the bell crank 26 .and thereby, through the medium of the pin 29 tothe driven A coiled contractile spring 3 2 acts upon the armjln to hold thec'am member 25 inoperative engagement with the pin 29 on the bell crank 26 when'th'e parts are in the relation shown in Fig. 1.
The bunch building mechanism may be driven from any suitable source of power. Hereinit derives its motion from the main drive shaft 35 of the machine to which shaft the winding spindle is operatively connected, as disclosed in said prior application. To this shaft is operatively connected an eccentric disk '36 (Fig. l) mounted upon a bracket 31 and having rigid therewith a gear 38 connected with the. main drive shaft through the medium of gears 39, 48 andAl. .Coacting with the eccentric disk 36 is a roller follower 42 on one arm of 'a bell crank 43. The other arm is connected by a link 44 with the link Slthrough the medium of two arms 45 and 48. Both arms are fast upon a shaft. 41, the arm 46 being adjustably secured to the shaft forareason which will presently appear. A coiled compression spring 48 acting between the frame .1 andapivot block/39 holds the roller follower 42 againstfithe eccentric disk 36.

As the slide advances from its retracted position (Fig. 1) into the advancedposition shown in Fig. 2 (which is the position occupied by the slide at the beginning of the main winding cycle) the traversing movements imparted to the arm 20 are continued. It will be observed in this connection that the cam member 25 extends downwardly and rearwardly from the pin 29 as shown in Fig. l and that the inclination of the cam is such that. as the slide and therefore the pivotal support 22 of the arm 20 advances the lower end of the arm is permitted to swing rearwardly under the action of the spring 34 so that its operative stroke remains within a predetermined range according to'the length of the bunch to be built. Thus the cam 25 in effect compensates for the advancing movement of the slide from its retracted position so as to maintain the range of operation of the guide 19 substantially constant. Thebunch building operation is terminated upon an advance of the slide sufficient to carry the main traversing cam l3 into operative association with the running strand. At this point the cam 25 moves out of engagement with the pin '29, it being observed that the cam drops "off sharply at its rear end to permit of an abrupt movement of the cam upwardly with a corre- 'sponding rearward movement imparted to the arm 20. The latter comes to rest against a stop member 50 carried by the main frame (Fig. 3), thereby, terminating the traversing movements of the guide l9 at .the rear end of its stroke. This is important inflthatit insures that the subsequent bunch building operationin the succeeding cycle will start immediately, adjacent the head or butt end of the bobbin. As the slide'continues its advance, 'the spring acting upon the arm 20 swings the latter, rearwardly as shown in broken lines in Fig. 2 untilsu'ch rearwardmovement is interrupted by theengagement of the guide pin l 9 with'the'forw'ard or head end of the slide, Thereafter, the arm remains stationary during the completion of the main winding operation, ,p V I The lengthof,,stroke of the, bunch building guide [9 and. therefore jthe length of the bunch which is built upon ,the bobbin may be varied by adjusting ,the position of the arm 45 of the drive means relative to the sha-ft 41 and correspondingly changing the length of the link 31. As above indicated, the arm 46 is adjustably scoured to the shaftAl/and it will be observed that the link 3 l is extensible axially. As shown, the link comprises a rod 5 l threaded at opposite ends in blocks 1'52 and. -,5 respectively pivoted tothe arms and. 30, the ,cpposite ends of the rods being threaded into the blocks and held in li ed position by ,means of lock nuts 54. I claim as my'invention:

2. In a bobbin winding machine, a main supporting frame, means on said frame rotatably supporting a bobbin to be wound, a slide reciprocable longitudinally of the bobbin, a main traversing device on said slide, means for advancing the slide to carry said device from a retracted position rearwardly of the bobbin into operative association with a running strand leading to the bobbin, an auxiliary yarn traversing guide mounted for reciprocation in a direction axially of the bobbin and adjacent thereto, and means for imparting a reciprocating movement to said guide including a driving member mounted on the frame and a driven member mounted on the slide, said driven member being movable with the slide out of operative association with the driving member in the advance of the slide beyond a predetermined point.

In a bobbin winding machine having a frame, means on said frame rotatably supporting a bobbin to be wound and means for guiding a running strand to the bobbin, a bunch building mechanism comprising a driving member mounted on the frame, a thread guide, a driven member connected with said guide mounted for movement endwise of the bobbin, said member being operatively associated to impart reciprocation to said guide during a predetermined range of movement of the driven member relative to the bobbin and disassociated to terminate the operation of the guide as an incident to the movement of said member beyond a predetermined point.

In a bobbin winding machine having means rotatably supporting a bobbin to be wound and traversing means including a support movable axially of the bobbin, a bunch building mechanism comprising a guide and an operating member therefor mounted on said support, a reciprocable actuating member, and means yieldably holding said members in operative relation, said operating member being movable with said support out of operative association with said actuating member.

In a bobbin winding machine having means rotatably supporting a bobbin to be wound and a member movable axially of the bobbin, a bunch building mechanism comprising a guide, a pivotal support for the guide movable with said member, a reciprocable actuator, said support having a cam surface for engagement by said actuator, and means yieldably holding said cam surface in operative relation to the actuator, said support being movable with said member out of operative association with said actuator.

In a bobbin winding machine having means rotatably supporting a bobbin to be wound and a member movable axially of the bobbin, a bunch building mechanism comprising a guide, a pivotal support for the guide movable with said member, a reciprocable actuator, said support having a cam surface for engagement by said actuator, and means yieldably holding said cam surface in operative relation to the actuator, said support being movable with said member out of operative association with said actuator, and said cam surface being shaped to permit movement of the pivotal support by said holding means to compensate for the advancing movement of the slide.

In a bobbin winding machine having means rotatably supporting a bobbin to be wound and traversing means including a support movable axially of the bobbin, 2, bunch building mechanism comprising a guide, a pivotal support for the guide, a reciprocable actuating member, said pivotal support having a cam member for engagement by said actuating member, and means yieldably holding said cam member in operative relation to the actuating member, said pivotal support and its cam member being mounted for movement with the slide out of operative association with said actuating member, and said holding means being operative upon the disengagement of the cam member from the actuating member to carry said guide in a rearward direction relative to the bobbin.
8. In a bobbin winding machine having a main supporting frame and means carried by said frame for rotatably supporting a bobbin to be wound, a yarn traversing guide, means supporting said guide for movement in a path generally parallel to the bobbin adjacent the butt end thereof including a member mounted for movement with said main traversing device, yieldable means acting on said member and tending to move it in a direction toward the butt end of the bobbin, a stop on said main frame for limiting the rearward movement of said member, and cam means for swinging said member against the action of said yieldable means.

In a bobbin winding machine having means rotatably supporting a bobbin to be Wound, a member movable axially of the bobbin, a support mounted on said member and having a traversing guide thereon, said support being movable to carry said guide in a path generally parallel to the bobbin and adjacent to the butt end thereof, yieldable means acting upon said support tending to move it toward the butt end of the bobbin, and power driven means for imparting a stroke of predetermined length to said support in a direction away from the butt end of the bobbin.
10. In a bobbin winding machine having means rotatably supporting a bobbin to be wound, a member movable axially of the bobbin, a pivotal support mounted on said member and having a traversing guide at its free end, said support being movable to carry said guide in an arcuate path generally parallel to the bobbin and adjacent to the butt end thereof, yieldable means acting upon said support tending to move it toward the butt end of the bobbin, and power driven means including a reciprocable actuating member for moving said support against the action of said yieldable means to carry said guide a predetermined distance along the bobbin.

In a bobbin winding machine having means rotatably supporting a bobbin to be wound, a member movable axially of the bobbin, a pivotal support mounted on said member and having a traversing guide at its free end, said support being movable to carry said guide in an arcuate path generally parallel to the bobbin and adjacent to the butt end thereof, yieldable means acting upon said support tending to move it toward the butt end of the bobbin, and actuating means for said support including a member reciprocable through a predetermined range of movement and engageable with said support to move it against the action of said yieldable means, said support having a curved surface engageable device on said support, said support initially positioning said traversing device in retracted relation to the bobbin, a yarn guide also mounted on said support and operative in the retracted position of said traversing device to engage a running strand leading to the bobbin, means for advancing the support to carry the traversing device from its said retracted position longitudinally of the bobbin and into operative association with said running strand, and means acting upon a predetermined advance of said traversing device to shift said yarn guide out of engagement with the running strand.
21. In a bobbin winding machine having a main supporting frame, means on said frame rotatably supporting a bobbin to be wound, a support mounted on said frame for reciprocation longitudinally of the bobbin, a main yarn traversing device on said support, a reciprocatory yarn guide on said support, and means for reciprocating said guide during a predetermined advance of the support from its said retracted position including a power driven member on said frame and cam means for transmitting the movements of the power driven member to said guide.
22. In a bobbin winding machine having a main supporting frame, means rotatably supporting a bobbin to be wound, a support mounted on said frame for reciprocation longitudinally of the bobbin, a main yarn traversing device on said support, an auxiliary yarn traversing guide also mounted on said support, means for advancing the support to carry said main traversing device from a retracted postion rearwardly of the bobbin into operative association with a running strand leading to the bobbin, and actuating means for the auxiliary traversing guide comprising a cam member connected with the traversing guide and an actuator mounted on said frame and engaging with said cam member during a predetermined range of movement only of said support from its said retracted position.
23. In a bobbin winding machine having a main supporting frame, means on said frame rotatably supporting a bobbin to be wound, a support mounted on said frame for reciprocation longitudinally of the bobbin, a main yarn traversing device on said support, a reciprocatory yarn guide pivoted on said support and means for oscillating said guide during a predetermined advance of the support from its said retracted position including a power driven member and cam means for transmitting the movements of the power driven member to said guide, said cam means including a cam and follower disengageable at a predetermined point in the advance of said support to render said actuator ineffective.-
24. In a bobbin winding machine having a main supporting frame, means rotatably supporting a bobbin to be wound, a support mounted on said frame for reciprocation longitudinally of the bobbin, a main yarn traversing device on said support, an auxiliary yarn traversing guide pivotally mounted on said support, means for advancing the support to carry said main traversing device from a retracted position rearwardly of the bobbin into operative association with a running strand leading to the bobbin, and actuating means for the auxiliary traversing guide comprising a cam member rigid with said guide and an actuator mounted on said frame and having a follower coacting with said cam member during the advance of the support from its said retracted position sufficient to carry the yarn traversing guide into association with the running strand.

In a bobbin Winding machine having a main supporting frame, means on said frame rotatably supporting a bobbin to be wound, a support mounted on said frame for reciprocation longitudinally of the bobbin, 2. main yarn traversing device on said support, a yarn guide pivoted on said support, and means for oscillating said guide during a predetermined advance of the support from its said retracted position, said means being operative to effect a change in the position of the guide automatically in the movement of the support along the bobbin whereby to compensate for the movement of the guide with said support.
26. In a bobbin winding machine having a main supporting frame, means on said frame rotatably supporting a bobbin to be Wound, a support mounted on said frame for reciprocation longitudinally of the bobbin, a main yarn traversing device on said support, a yarn guide pivoted on said support, and means for oscillating said guide during a predetermined advance of the support from its said retracted position including a pair of bell cranks, one of said bell cranks being adjustable to vary the length of stroke of said guide.
