Rockford, Illinois, of Illinois I The invention pertains to children's highchairs, and has more especial reference to devices for mounting the tables of such chairs upon the side arms.
. One object of the invention is to provide a table mounting device permitting adjustment of the table in a front-to-rear direction along the arms and swinging movement of the table into a depending position forwardly of the arms with the table pivotally suspended so as to facilitate placement of the child in the chair. 1
A further object is to provide for easy and convenient adjustment of the table along the arms and to permit of removal of the table entirely when desired.
g A general object is to provide a table mounting device of a practical character, simple in construction and susceptible 'of manufacture at low cost. The objects of the invention thus generally set forth, together with other and ancillary advantages, are attained by the construction and arrangement shown by way of illustration in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a highchair equipped A with mounting devices for the table, constructed in accordance with my invention.
' Fig. 2 is a side view of the same and illustrating in broken lines the position of the table in its suspended relation to the side arms.

In the illustrative embodiment of my invention selected for purposes of illustration I have shown the upper portion of a childs highchair comprising a'seat l, a back 8 and side arms 9. A table I0 is mounted on the arms 9 through the medium of mounting devices generally designated I I, one for each arm. I

The arrangement is such that when the locking lever I1 is held upwardly to disengage its finger from a notch l8 the table may he slid lengthwise of the slot l3, and in the extreme forward position of the table, it is adapted to swing downwardly into the suspended position shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
The bar I2 is preferably of channel shape as shown in Fig. 6 and is secured to the side arm9 in such a way that the channel is closed laterally except for the slot l3. As shown, the channel bar has an outer wall portion I9 disposed in a vertical plane in outwardly spaced relation to the inner wall of a recess 911 out in the side arm and substantially fiush with the portion of the arm rearwardly of the recess. The bar also has a lower flange 20 and a top flange 2|, the latter being extended for attachment to the upper side of the arm 9 which may be formed with a shal- 10w recess to receive the flange fiush with the upper surface of the arm. The slot l3 of the wall portion IQ of the channel bar extends substantially throughout the length of the bar terminating just short of the rear end which is attached to the side arm as by means of a screw 22. At its forward end the bar has a short front fiange 23 closing the forward end of the recess 9a.
The bracket I4 is in the form of an angle plate secured by screws 25 to the underside of the table and having a depending portion 26 extending along the outer face of the bar and carrying the lug l5 in vertically spaced relation to the table. The lug is thereby supported for movement along the slot adjacent the upper edge of the latter.
The locking lever It extends generally horizontally along the bracket M. Its rear end is mounted on a pivot pin 2'! carried by the depend ing portion 26 of the bracket, and it is urged downwardly by means of a torsion spring 28 coiled on the pivot stud 21 and having one arm bearing against the underside of the bracket and another arm engaging with 9. lug 29 struck out from the lever I6. Downward movement of the lever from the spring is limited by a stop lug 3 formed on the bracket and underlying the lower edge of the lever. The locking finger l! is disposed near the forward end of the lever in opposed relation to the bracket lug l5, the ends of the lug and finger being preferably turned in opposite directions as shown in Fig. 6.
The forward end of the locking lever is guided for vertical movement between the depending portion 26 of the bracket and a guide lug 3| struck out from the bracket; and the extreme forward end of the lever is provided with a fingerpiece 32 for convenience in swinging the locking lever upwardly against the action of its spring.
It will be-seenthat by lifting the free endsof the leversat'opposite ends of the table the fingers I! will be disengaged with respect to the notches [8 so that the table may be slid in a front-to-rear direction with respect to the arms. Upon release of the levers after disengagement from one set of notches the levers will be urged downwardly by their respective springs so as tocarry the locking fingers into engagement'with the-next succeeding pair of notches-l8.
When the table is adjusted into its extreme forward position it will swingdownwardly by the force of gravity upon the lugs 15 and locking fingers ll disposed in opposed relation (Figs. 3, '5 and 6) and acting as pivots, it being observed in this'connection that the brackets M are attached somewhat rearwardly of thecenterof the table. With-the table thus suspended as shownin broken lines in'Fig. 2,'it is capable of bein swung easily so that it'will yieldunder the pressure of the childsfeet, thereby greatly facilitating the placement of the child inthe chair.
When the table is in its foremost-suspended position it may be easilyremoved entirely from the chair. For this purpose,=theextreme forward endsof the-slots :I3 in the-bars I 2 open'upward- 1y for communication with upwardly opening notches 33, the latter in turn communicating with horizontally disposed slots '34 in the top flange 2! ('Figs. 3 and 4) the slots being enlarged at .their inner 'ends so as to 7 permit free passage of the bracket lugs wand-locking fingers H.
I claim asmy invention:
1. A table mounting device for'highchairs having side arms comprising, in combination, an elongated supporting bar adapted for attachment to a side arm-of the chair and provided with an elongated horizontally disposed slot, a bracket having a flange for attachment to the underside'of the table-and having a bearing element engaging-in said slot and movablelongitudinallythereoi, and means for locking'the bracket in=selected positions along the slot, said bearing element pivotally-supporting thebracket at the forward end of the slot so as'to permit the table attached to the bracket to swing downwardly into suspended relation to the supporting bar, said bearing element being offset downwardly from the flange of the bracket so astoprovide clearance between the table and the forward end of the slotted bar in the swingingmovement of the table relative to the bar.
2. A table mountin device for highchairs having side arms comprising, in combination, an I elongated supporting bar adapted for attachment to a side arm of the chair and provided with an elongated horizontally disposed slot, a bracket for attachment to the table and having a, hearing element engaging in said slot and movable longitudinally thereof, means for locking the bracket in selected positions along, the slot comprising a locking member carried by the bracket in. opposed relation to said bearing element,.said slot having notches along one edge for engagementwby said locking member, and saidbearing element pivotally supporting the bracket at the forward end of the slot so as to permitthe table attached to. the bracket to swing downwardly into suspended relation to the supporting bar.
3. A table mounting device for highchairs having side arms comprising, in combination, an elongated bar adapted for attachment to a side arm of the chair and provided with an elongated horizontally disposed slot with a notch along one edge, a bracket for attachmentto the table and having a bearing element'slidable in said slot, and
a locking member carried by said bracket in opposed relation to said bearing element and spring pressed into holding engagement with said notch.

A'table mounting device for highchairs having side arms comprising, in combination, an elongated bar adapted for attachment to a side arm of the chair and provided with an elongated horizontally disposed slot with a plurality of notches-along its lower edge, a bracket for attachment tothe table and having a bearing element slidable in said slot and constituting a pivot for suspending the bracket at the forward end of the slot, a locking member pivoted on saidbracketzand having a lockinggfinger. disposed inoppositedirelation. tosaidibearing element on the bracket, and ,aispring urging said-member in a direction to carry said lockingifingerintova selected onev of the notches.;said member-havin a laterally --proiecting :fingerpiece at its forward end :foroperating the-member a ainst theaction oil-said spring 5.
