COOKING APPARATUS.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 25,196, dated August 23, 18 59.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ROBERT IV. HILL, of the town of Naugatuck, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cooking and Heating Apparatus; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construc tion, character, and operation of the same; reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which make a part of this specification, in which Figure 1, is a perspective view of the whole apparatus. Fig. 2, is a longitudinal section of the same, cut vertically through the center. Fig. 3, is a transverse section of the same. Fig. 4L, is a perspective of the same, showing it connected with a stove. Fig. 5, is a representation of a gridiron.

My improvement consists in making the cooking and heating apparatus in such a manner as to render it suitable to use with any ordinary cooking stove by placing it in the boiler hole, or holes, closing the doors of the stove, and causing the whole draft (to ignite, and keep the tire in the apparatus,) to pass into it through ports to be closed by valves, or dampers, in the upper part of the feed spout, or spouts, and, after passing through the coal, pass out through spaces in the rear portion into the stove, and out through the stove-pipe, &c., and, in the manner of using the hot air chamber above the fire pits which set in the boiler holes in the stove, and in the manner of fitting the portion so that in very warm weather, or when but little fire is needed, I can make the fire in one part only.

I make the apparatus of cast iron, or any other suitable material, substantially as represented in Fig. 1, &c., with air chambers, as shown at A, A, Figs. 1 and 2, and pits for the fire, as shown at B, Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4. In the rear portion of these pits I make holes, or spaces, as shown at a, through which the draft passes into the stove, and out at the chimney.

I make the feeding spouts, substantially as represented at C, C, Fig. 1. In the covers of these feeding spouts I have dampers, as indicated at Z), I), Fig. 1, which regulate the draft in the usual way for stoves, &c.

I make the partition of cast iron, or any other suitable material, to fit the apparatus, substantially as shown at c, Fig. 2, and as indicated by dots in Fig. l, and so that it can be removed at pleasure.

To use this apparatus I set the lower portion, B, in the hole, or holes, in the stove, as represented in Fig. 4, with the hot-air chamber A above the stove, and have griddles, as shown at D, to close the two ends, when necessary, and a piece, or partition, 0, in the middle, (which is connected with the portion 0, Fig. 1). And, if I desire to use the whole front'of the stove, I take out D, D, and C, (but otherwise take out what is necessary,) kindle the fire in all, or either portion of the apparatus, and place the cooking vessel, sad iron, (or any utensil,) in its proper place, when all the draft will pass in through the opened valves, or dampers, as at b, ignite the fuel, and pass through the openings, at, stove-pipe, or chimney.

The advantages of my improvement consist in that we can have all the convenience of the stove, in Warm Weather, without the additional heat, and thereby save a very large proportion of the fuel.

What I claim as-my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The portable cooking, or heating, apparatus, herein before described, composed of the hot air chamber, (A,) and fire pit, (13,) when provided with ports, (C,) furnished with registers, with the partition, (0,) and draft apertures, (a,) the Whole being constructed and arranged as specified.
