Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
TOBIAS NEW, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
MANUFACTURE OF PREPARED ROOFING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 251,921, dated January 3,. 1882.
Application filed November 21, 1881. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1,.l0BIAS NEW, of the city and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Manufacture of Prepared Roofing, of which the following is a clear, full, and exact description.
It is well known that prepared or ready roofing is made by putting a waterproofing composilion of a gummy nature-such as the pitchy products of the pine or any bituminous compound of suitable consistency to insure adhesion-between two or more layers of single saturated felt, and submitting the whole to heavy pressure in a machine. In thus manufacturing the prepared or ready roofing the resinous or pitchy connecting material is apt to ooze through from the ends of the rolls and cause the whole to stick together, and frequently to such an extent as to prevent the prepared article from nnrolling. It also frequently happens that the pitchy substance is pressed through the body of, the felt, so that when it is appliedto-the root the felt adheres firmly to the boards, and in the expansion and contraction of the latter the roofing becomes cracked and consequently leaky. To overcome these serious difficnlties in the prepared or ready roofing is the object of my present invention.
I have discovered from actual experiments that if there be rolled up with the prepared roofing when the same is being rolled for market an extra layer of felt or paper the difficulty is entirely removed and a better roof is insured. I insert this extra layer in such a mannerthat when the prepared material is unrolled upon the roof for immediate application the dry paper or felt will be nextto the boarding, and as all danger of adhesion is thereby avoided, the workmen can apply the roofing with greater rapidity and ease. The result isa saving of labor and securing a roof of greater durability.
I am aware that felt and other materials coated with waterproofing compounds have been covered on one and both sides with paper which has been pressed on and caused to adhere to the coatingof waterproofingcompound but such is not my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An improvement in the manufacture of prepared or ready roofing, the some consisting ininserting and rolling up with the roofing a layer of dry feltor paper,-substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. As an improved article of manufacture, prepared or really roofing provided with an extra layer of dry felt or paper, substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
TOBIAS NEW.
