SCREW-OPERATED PIVOTED-JAW BOLT HOLDER.
Filed Aug. 25, 1947 Inventor Arno/d Stacey Patented Aug. 15, 1950 Arnold" Sjtacey; Jasper; Ark? This. invention relates .to new...and .usefulirm. provement in. a combination .lboltlholder and nbea ine,and-battery terminah puller and the primary object of the present invention is;..to.pr;o-=. videatdevice -whicmwill engage the kerf of a bolt to hold the same against rotation as the nut is being screwedqon or off of the; bolt.
Another important object .of the. present invention is to provide a device of the aforementioned character so designed as to be used in pulling or removing battery terminals, gears, and b in svfrom shafts andthelike in a minimum time.
A.further object of the presentinventiomis-to provide-a combination bolt helder, gear,- heari-n'gand battery terminal.puller..-that is; quickly and readily applied to the article on which the same is to be used.
A still further aim of the present invention is to provide a device of the class described that is simple and practical in construction, strong and reliable in use, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages resid in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the present combination tool;
Figure 2 is a top plan view of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is an enlarged longitudinal vertical sectional view taken substantially on the plane of the broken section line 3--3 of Figure 2; and
Figure 4 is an enlarged longitudinal horizontal sectional view taken on substantially on the plane of section line 4-4 of Figure 3.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration, there is disclosed a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the numeral represents a pair of substantially rectangular forwardly converging side members having an integral sleeve I2 formed at their forward portions that engages a cylindrical support member [4. A rivet or the like l6 connecting the forward ends of the side members engages a transverse recess [8 provided in the member l4, to prevent movement of the member l4 relative to the sleeve.
A vertical and preferably square bore is provided in the member 14 and slidably engages the square shank portion 22 of a, kerf engaging member 24. A set screw 26 adjustably mounted emaemamm, 1947;. 'SerialeNo;HWAJHv,

Projec ed upwardly fromthe' rear portion. of: the side members ,I D, Tisia. pair ot. Spacedbarallli" extensions 4z"tha.t-.,a're integrallyl-fb 'medi the side members. The upper terminals of the extensions 42 are pivoted as at 44 to a pair of arcuate links 46 that are rigidly carried by a travelling block 48 adjustably mounted on the rod 38. The free terminals of these extensions 42 project forwardly and the upper and lower edges of these terminals are bent inwardly upon each other to provide a pair of forwardly diverging movable jaws 50 that are adjustable toward the member 24 when the rod 36 is r0- tatecl to move the block .48 toward the hand rib 4%]. In practical use of the device, for holding bolts, the kerf in the head of a bolt (not shown) is engaged by the kerf engaging member 24 with the shank of the bolt and nut carried thereby projecting outwardly between the jaws 56. As the rod 36 is rotated to move the traveling block 48 toward the hand grip 40, the jaws will clamp against the structure holding the bolt so that a suitable tool' may be employed for removing or tightening the nut on the bolt with the kerf engaging member holding the bolt against rotation, and the jaws preventing movement of the structure holding the bolt.
Also, the device may be inverted so that the jaws embrace a battery vpost and extend between a battery terminal and the battery casing (not shown) and the kerf engaging member bears on the battery post. In this position, by rotating the rod 40, the kerf engaging member will remain fixed and the jaws will force the battery terminal toward the kerf engaging members for convenient removal of the battery terminal.
Obviously, a like procedure may be used in removing gears, bearings and the like from shafts.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A bolt holder comprising a pair of forwardly converging side members, a sleeve formed at the forward terminals of said side members, a cylindrical body rigidly carried by said sleeve, 2. kerf engaging member removably and adjustably carried by said body, integral extensions projecting upwardly from the rear portions of said side members, a pair of movable jaws pivoted on said extensions, and means for actuating said jaws relative to said kerf engaging, member, said means including a screw threaded rod pivotally and swivelly mounted on said side members, a traveling block mounted on said rod, and means connecting said traveling block to said jaws.
' 21A bolt ho'lder comprising a pair of forwardly converging side members, a sleeve formed at the forward terminals of said side members, a cylindrical body rigidly carried by said sleeve, a kerf engaging member removably and adjustably carried by said body, extensions projecting upwardly from the rear portions of said side members, a pair of movable jaws pivoted on said extensions, and means for actuating said jaws relative to said kerf engaging member, said means including a pivot pin carried by said side members having a central aperture therein, a screw threaded rod having a reduced terminal loosely engaging the aperture in said pivot pin, means for retaining said rod in position to said pivot pin, a traveling block mounted on said rod, and means connecting said traveling block to said jaws.
3. The combination of claim 2 wherein said connecting means includes a pair of arcuate extensions integrally formed with said laws.
4. A bolt holder comprising a pair of substantially rectangular side members having forward and rear portions, a sleeve integrally formed with the forward portions of said side members, a kerf engaging member removably and adjustably carried by said body, a pair of spaced parallel extensions projecting laterally from the rear portions-of said side members, a pair of swingable jaws pivoted on said extensions, a pair of arcuate links integrally formed with said jaws and having rear end portions, a threaded rod swiveled to said side members, and an internally threaded traveling block secured to the rear end portions of links, said traveling block being threaded on said rod;
