rlhis invention generally relates to vehicle bodies and more particularly to improvements in body side frames.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple improved arrangement of the chords, posts and diagonals of a welded truss type ubody side frame which requires a minimum number of side panel mounting members welded to the members forming the truss for reinforcement thereof and for readily attaching the exterior side panels.
The novel form and arrangement of the members forming the Welded truss type body side frame and panel mounting and reinforcing members will become apparent by reference to the following detailed description and drawings clearly disclosing one modication of the invention which is particularly adapted for a side frame of the body or cab of a locomotive of the Diesel electric type. i
Figure 1 of the drawings is a two part vertical elevation View of the side frame.
Figure 2 is a two part vertical sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figures 3, 4 and 5 are vertical sectional views taken, respectively on lines 3 3, 4 4 and 5--5 of Figure 1.
As illustrated in the Various figures of the drawings the body or cab side frame assembly is of the truss type comprising built-up upper and lower chord members, generally indicated at I and 3, and connected by suitable gussets and stiffening members to the ends of vertical posts and diagonal members of different sectional thickness. These members comprise angle end posts 5 of thin section, H shaped bolster posts 1 and diagonals 9-I I of thicker section adjacent the end posts and intermediate channel posts I3 and diagonale I5 of thinner section.
As best illustrated in Figures 2, 3, 4 and 5, the upper chord member comprises a Z bar I1 and an arcuate closure plate I9 welded thereto to form the hollow upper -chord I and the arcuate eave portion of the cab roof.
Stiffening members 2I are welded in the hollow upper chord intermediate the ends and these members are provided with flanges in alignment with the webs and ilanges of the posts and diagonal members for attachment of the upper ends thereof by welding to the upper chord adjacent the flanges of the stillening members 2|. Carlines 23 of thick section are also welded between the upper chord members I adjacent the stiffening members 2| and other carlines 25 and partial carlines 21 of the thinner section are Welded at the outer ends to the inside surface of 2 the upper chord I. Purlines 29 are welded between certain of the carlines at the ends of the side frame to support roof plates and intermediate hatch covers are adapted to be located between these roof sections and another thicker section centrally located carline 23.
The lower chord 3 comprises a Z bar 3I and an angle bar 33 welded along the'end of the outer horizontal flange thereof.
As best illustrated in Figure 3 the lower end of the inner flange of the bolster post 1 is 'cut away from the web and bent inwardly and welded directly to and by means of a gusset 35 to a builtup body bolster 31 having upper and lower plates 394I which are welded to the upper inner and lower outer horizontal ilanges of the Z bar 3I of the lower chord 3. The end of the vertical web portion of the bolster 31 is also welded to the inside of the vertical web of the Z bar 3I-and a `rjacking pad 43 is welded to the lower bolster plate 4I directly below each bolster post 1.
The inner and outer lower end surfaces of the bolster posts 1 and the thicker section diagonals S-II are flush with the inner vertical surface of the angle bar 33 and the outer vertical face of the web of the Z bar 3I and these faces are joined by welding and by suitable longitudinal gusset plates welded between these members. The lower end surfaces of the bolster posts 1 and diagonals 9-I I are also welded to the upper ilange surface of the angle bar 33.
The inner and outer upper end surfaces of the bolster posts 1 and diagonals 9-I I are also ilush with the inner vertical surfaces of the web and lower flange of upper chord Z bar II respectively and these surfaces are joined by welding and by longitudinal gusset plates welded between these members. The upper ends of the bolster posts 1 and diagonals 9-II are also welded directly to the horizontal flange of the upper chord Z bar I1 adjacent the stiffening members 2| in the upper chord I.
The inner surfaces of the upper and lower end of the intermediate channel posts I3 and Vdi agonals I5 are also ilush with the inner surface of the vertical web of the Z bar I1vof the upper chord and with the outer sur-face of the vertical web of the Z bar 3I of the lower chord 3. The upper ends of the intermediate posts I3 and diagonals are welded to the lower horizontal flange of the Z bar I1 of the upper chord I and the inner surfaces of upper ends thereof are welded to longitudinal gusset plates which are also welded to the vertical web of the Z bar Il. The lower ends of the intermediate posts I3 and diagonals are welded to the upper surface of the angle bar 33 of the lower chord 3 and the lower end inner surfaces thereof abut and are welded directly to the outer face of the vertical web of the Z bar 3I of the lower chord 3 and to longitudinal gusset plates welded therebetween. As the intermediate channel posts I3 and diagonals are of the same sectional thickness and of less thickness than the bolster posts I and diagonals 9-II the outer surfaces thereof are in a plane parallel to and slightly within the plane of the outer surfaces of the bolster posts 'I and diagonals 9-II. The outside lower end surfaces of the intermediate posts I3 and diagonals are welded to longitudinal gusset plates which are also welded to the upper surface of the angle bar 33 of the lower chord 3. The outside upper end surfaces of the intermediate posts I3 and diagonals I5 are also welded to longitudinal gusset plates which are also welded to thehorizontal surface of the ZV bar- I1 of the upper chord I adjacent the st iiening members 2 Il therein.
The outer lower end surface of the angle end posts 5 are welded flush with the outer surface of the diagonals 9 and to longitudinal gussets connected to these diagonals. The upper end of the end posts 5 are welded to the lower horizontal flange of the Z bar I'I of the upper chord I and the outer surface of these posts are welded to the inner surface of the lower vertical flange of this Z bar.
It will be evident with the above described arrangement` of the truss members that the outer surfaces of the end posts 5 and also the bolster posts I and diagonals 9--II adjacent thereof are in the sameplane with the inner vertical surfaces of the lower flange of the upper chord Z bar I I and angle bar 33 of the lower chord and that the outer surfaces of the intermediate posts I3 and diagonals` I5 are in a parallel plane inset with respectthereto.
Upper panel mounting strips 45 areV welded along the insidevertical surface of the lower flange ofthe Z bar Il ofthe upper chord and at the ends flush with the outer surfaces ofthe end posts 5, bolster posts 1 and diagonals 9-I I. .lower panel mounting strips 4'I are welded along the inner surface of the vertical flange of the angle bar 33 of the lower chord member 3. Combinedbelt rail reinforcing and panel mounting members 49 of U shape and provided with outwardly extending flanges are welded at the ends flush with the outer surfaces of the end posts 5, bolster posts 'I and diagonals `Sl-II and the dangesof the members 49 welded between the two diagonals I I are also welded intermediate their ends to the outer surfaces of the intermediate posts I3 and diagonale I5, as the thickness of the-members 48 are selected for attachment` in this manner. The members 49, as best shown` in Figures 12 and 3accordingly form two belt rails parallel to and intermediate the upper and lower chords I-3 and also serve as reinforcing and panel supporting members as the outer surfaces thereof are in the same `plane as the upper and lower panel mounting strips 45-41.
Other horizontal panel mounting strips 5I and vertical panel mounting strips 53-55 are welded flush at the endsbetween the upper and lower mounting strips 45-41 and between thecombined belt rail reinforcing and panel'mounting members45 so that their outer surfaces of all are in the same plane.`
The panel mountingA strips and members with thistruss form of side frame are few in number and are easily attached in the above described manner to the members forming the truss, and may be drilled and tapped for clamp bolts 5l passing through openings in batteri strips, such as shown at 6I-63--65 in Figure 2 for readily clamping the horizontal and vertical edges of exterior panels or-plates, notI shown, to the outer surfaces of the panel mounting strips and members.
