It has long been desirable tohave an inexpensive flash tube supporting structure and numerous constructions have been devised. The supporting structure .of the present invention may best be called a channelf because it is channel-like in appearance. It has a number of v accurate alignment of the channel with other parts of the ignition apparatus.
It is, accordingly, the object of the present invention to provide a new and improved flash tube supporting structure in the form of a channel which can be made readily and economically, is adaptable to various types of installations, and can be accurately secured in desired position relative to the burner and flash tube.
More specific and other objects of the present invention will become apparent from the ensuing description of an embodiment of the invention, in the course of which reference is had to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary plan view of a double gas burner provided with ignition apparatus including the novel flash tube supporting channel of the present invention;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary cross sectional view taken along the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary bottom view of the burner and channel, the channel being a left hand one;
Fig. 4 is a simmer burner end view of the channel:
Fig. 5 is a side elevational view of the channel;
Fig. 6 is a plan view of a blank from which either right or left hand channels are made; and
Fig. 'i is a bottom view of a right hand channel.
Referring now to the drawing, the channel of the present invention is indicated as a whole by reference character Ill and one is shown in Figs. 8, 4 and 5. It may be used for supporting a flash tube such as the one indicated by referenc character I 2 in Figs. 1 and 2 in operative relation to aburner. In Figs. 1 and 2 it is shown holding the flash tube in operative relation to a simmer burner l4 forming part of a double burner ii,
the main burner of which is indicated by reference character l8 and surrounds the simmer burner. The other end of the flash tube is held in operative relation to a pilot burner includiizg a cup-like housing 22 and a pilot burner jet 2 The burners may take various forms and those illustrated are shown only for the purpose of better understanding the construction and advantages of the channel of the present invention. The main burner l8 includes a base 26 and a cap 28 provided with a series of peripheral outlet ports 30. It is supplied with gas through a gas supplying and burner mounting part 32. of the base. The simmer burner comprises a cap 34 I detachably secured to a simmer burner post 36 and provided with two series of outlet ports 38 and 40 and holding the main burner cap 28 in place, as best illustrated in Fig. 2, and after the manner disclosed and claimed in my copending application Serial No. 31,960, filed June 9'. 1948.
The ignition apparatus includes, in addition to the pilot burner, flash tube and channel, a jet 42 secured to the simmer burner post below cap 84 in suitable manner, as by a press fit. The illustrated jet has an axial opening 44 communicating with the interior of the simmer burner post 38 and a slot 46 forming an outlet opening both upwardly and radially outwardly.
The ignition apparatus is so constructed and arranged that when gas is supplied to the simmer burner it is ignited from the pilot burner. Gas is supplied selectively to the simmer burner or to both it and the main burner under the com I trol of a valve, not shown, but which may be of known construction. When gas is supplied to the simmer burner, it flows out through the outlet ports 38 and 40 as well as through the jet. Gas from the jet is mixed with air and the mixture flows through flash tube I! to the pilot, where it is ignited and flame flashes back through the tube to ignite gas escaping from the jet. The flashback is guided upwardly to ignite gas escaping from the ports 38 and 40, this being done by the channel and the flow of air upwardly through it. Gas supplied to the main burner is ignited through a lighting slot 48 in the main burner top and extending radially inward from the ports 30.
The channel of the present invention is quite small so that it can easily be secured in flxed relation to the burner, as to the underside of the burner base and thus in an out-of-the-way place. It is so secured as by a screw 48 passing through structure extending from one wall of the channel. such as an apertured ear or flange 50 of the channel extending outwardly from the upper edge of one of the channel walls. The channel includes a pair generally vertical side walls 52 and 54 connected by a circular bight 56, at one end of which the flash tube I2 is telescopically received and supported. The opposite ends of the walls 52 and 54 are bent inwardly, as indicated by reference character 58, fairly closely to encircle the under-halt of the jet 42 (see Fig. 4). The restricted end of the support enables the jet to be used in conjunction with the securing screw and its opening properly to locate the channel.
The upper corners to of the channel walls are extended upwardly a short distance better to guide the gas and flame from the jet for ignition purposes. A passage for the upward flow of air through the channel is provided by an opening 62 in the bight located so as to be below and, to project beyond the jet when the channel is fastened in place. The end of the flash tube is prevented from blocking the opening by a small upstanding tongue 64 limiting movement of the flash tube.
Another feature of the channel is that it can be constructed with the securing flange 50 extendingeither to the right or left. In the embodiment of Figs. 1 to 5, the flange is at the left, viewing the channel from its simmer burner end. In the embodiment of Fig. 7, the flange is at the right. All that is necessary to have the flange at one side or the other is to form a blank ll (see Fig. 6), from which the channel is made, so that the flange is to the desired side of the channel.
The flash tube supports of the present invention can be readily made from blanks 10 which can be formed with the flange 50 atone side or the other to provide right or left hand supports. They can be easily secured in place, as to the underside of the main burner by screws 48, and they are easily properly aligned by the cooperative action of the jet and the restricted end portion of the support. The flash tube is telescopically received in the channel and yet prevented from closing the air opening 62 by the stop 64.
When gas is supplied to the simmer burner, some of it is discharged from the jet port 46, is mixed with air, and then flows through the flash tube to the pilot burner, where the mixture is ignited. The ignited mixture flashes back through the tube and ignites gas flowing upwardly through port 46. An ignition flame is thus directed upwardly to the ports 38 and 40 to ignite the gas discharging through the simmer burner ports.
While the present invention has been described in connection with the details of a particular embodiment thereof, it should be understood that these details are not intended to be 4 llmitative of the invention except as set forth in the accompanying claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A support for holding a gas burner ignition flash tube in proximity to a jet comprising a channel having a pair of generally upwardly extending walls and a bight, structure extending from one channel wall providing means for securing the channel in fixed relation to a burner, one end of said channel being dimensioned to receive and support the end of a flash tube and the opposite end being adapted to encircle the underportion of the jet.
2. A support for holding a gas burner ignition flash tube in proximity to a jet comprising a. channel having a pair of generally upwardly extending walls and a circular bight, a flange extending from the upper edge of one channel wall providing means for securing the channel to the underside of a burner, the walls and bight of said channel being dimensioned to receive and support the end of a flash tube and the opposite end of the channel being restricted so as to encircle closely the under-half of the jet.
3. A support for holding a gas burner ignition flash tube in proximity to a jet comprising a channel having a pair of generally upwardly extending walls and a bight, a flange extending from the upper edge of one channel wall providing means for securing the channel to the underside of a burner, one end of said channel being dimensioned to receive and support the end of a flash tube and the opposite end being adapted partially to encircle the jet, said bight having an air opening and an upwardly extending stop at the flash tube and of said opening.
4. A support for holding a gas burner ignition flash tube in proximity to a jet comprising an open-topped channel and structure for securing the channel to a burner, one end of said channel being dimensioned to receive and telescopically support the end of a flash tube, an air opening in the bottom of the channel, and a stop inside said channel preventing a tube from closing the opening.
