Description

A09 15, 1950 F. A. KING ANTENNA REEL Origipal Filed Jan. 28, 1944 antenna line as to approach counterbalancing thereof, therefore the spring tends to assist in the windingin operation and the correct adjusting of the line,
The shaft 2 constitutes a clutchl element 2l) formed integral therewith or otherwise, comprising a radial flange terminating in an annular conformed peripheral surface 2| conforming to the tapered side wall l5. Thus in turn the element 2li is also provided with a similar coniformed cavity, having an annular recess therein 22 and the flange 20 is provided with apertures 23 which intersect the outer wall of the recess- 22, thus forming a series of suitable semicircular notches which serve as ratchet teeth 24. The hexagon portion of post 3 Icarries a pawl supporting arm 25 interposed between the spring I1 and the recess 22. spring 21 which presses pawl 28 arranged to coact with said ratchet teeth 24.
As seen in the drawings the spool B isdrivingly engaged with the clutch element 20 and the hub 29 abuts an apertured plate 36 which latter are axially movable on the shaft, a slight clearance being provided between plate 3D and the inner side of the crank C to accommodate this movement.
Pre-setting means F is mounted on the outer end of crank C in a most convenient location and comprises a knob 3| fixed to one end of a screw shaft 32 extending through compression spring 33, plate 36 and screw threadedly engaged with crank C.
Crank handle actuating means G, as shown in Figs. l, 3 and 4 consists of a hollow shank 34v i AHollow 39 includes an inner boss 43 xed to theY outer en d of pin 38 by means of a llister headed screw 4 I having internal screw-threaded engagef ment therewith and the opposite end is fixed as at 42.
' 'I he hollow of handle D is provided with a cavity which intersects the counterbore 43 for screw head 4|, beneath which head is positioned a washer made of spring material havingY a'curved tongue keeper 44 which by means of the'cavity pivotally supports a hook end 45 of a Vdetension member having a hook 46 at its opposite end which is adapted to co-act with the nut 31, there being a cavity 36a in the finger piece 3'6 for this purpose.
As seen in Fig. 3 the hub 41 of crank C is formed with a skirt 48 which conforms with the contour of plate 33 except that it converges with a tapering channel 49 extending to the free end of the crank. This channel 49 includes inwardly facing apertured bosses 50--50 pivotally supporting, by means of pin i, a lever 52 the outer end 53 of which co-acts with the pin 38 and in turn the inner shorter end 54 is fulcrumed to the plate 36 by Vmeans of keeper lug 55.
It will be noted that the hub 41 is provided with an offset 56 which forms an opening 51 through which the plate is assembled and the tapered end 58 thereof is supported by the curved A pivot pin 26 supports av 4 counterbalance end of the crank having a seat 59 for this purpose.
The tensionof spring 33 is regulated by turnin'g knob 3l. andrby this means a setting of the clutch may be had as desired to drivingly connect and disconnect the spool, inasmuch as the spring 33 when under tension will yieldingly force the spool into frictional engagement with the brake or drag element 20 for winding in the antenna line.
Assuming now that the finger piece 36 and the handle D is given a firm squeeze by the operators hand or the handle, D is merely pressed inwardly, the rod38 will movethe lever 52 as indicated by the dotted line Yt0 and the keeper 55 will move outwardly under the urge of spring 33 to release the clutch. The hook 46, being under the urge of spring keeperA 44, will then snap into place behind the nut 31 to retain the clutch mechanism disengaged as indicated by dotted line 6|, so that a weighted antenna `may be. unwound as the spring I1 is wound up toits full capacity when rotated in the direction as indicated by the arrow Si?, which later serves to automatically stop the antenna within ranges of its predetermined radio' after permitting it to automatically stop-paying o'ut,.the operator need merely press a button 66l and one of the wedges operated thereby will slide under the detention hook 45, whereby to disengage the latter and permit the spring 33 to reengage the clutch element 2E! and its connected handle D with the spool B which then is rotated by swinging the crank C to adjust the antenna frequency to the desired position and it is main-1 tained in this position through the medium of the i.- ln a reeling mechanism, asupport, a stationary post thereon, a tubular shaft rotatablev on said post, a clutch member fixed on said shaft for rotation therewith, a spool rotatable and axiallymovable on said shaft, a second clutch member carried by and rotating with said spool, a crank ixed to said shaft, spring pressure means carried bv the crank arranged to apply pressure against said spool for urging said clutch mehr' bers into operative engagement with one another, and means on the crank movable for con trolling said spring pressure means for clutch-l ing and declutching said clutch members.
