Referring now to the drawings in detail wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention they numeral 5 designates a pair of end seat supports and 6 a plurality of intermediate seat supports connected in spaced parallel relation with respect to each other by means of a front rail 'l suitably secured to the front lower edge of the seat supports and by a rear rail 8 similarly secured to the bottom of the seat supports at the rear end thereof.

The lower edge of frame 25 is supported ou a. base 28 and a top rail or finishing molding 29 is secured on top of the frame while nishing strips 30 are secured to the front and rear edges of the frame. The sides of the frame are closed by sheet covering material similar to the covering 20. Y

The end seat supports 5 are secured to the horizontal frame member 26 by screws or similar fastenings 32 and the end back supports 9 are rectangular shaped supporting member or leg indicated generally at 34 and which likewise cornprises a frame 35 having its sides closed by a frame 35 above the sides 36 thereof for attaching to one of the intermediate seat supports 6 by suitable fasteners and the front edge of frame 35isrnotched as shown at 39 to receive the front rail l which thus rests on the front edge of frame 35. The bottom of the intermediate supports` or legs 34 is also provided with a base 4U.

' From the foregoing it will be'apparent that the'interlocking dado connection between the rail I4 and back-supports 9 and H as well as the .dado interlocking connection between the bar |`8 and seat supports 5 and 6 rigidly supports the back'and seat supports of the frame and the. front edge of rail I4 which is ilush with the front edges of the back supports 9 and H supports the covering between the back supports and theV plank I1 supports the covering between the seat supports so as to withstand the weight of the person occupying the pew.

The several'parts of the pew may be manufactured in quantity production by simultaneously 'cutting and milling similar parts from stock and the seat and back portion of the pew 140 may be assembled and shipped in a knock-down condition for assembling on the site to the end members 24 and intermediate legs 34.

AvInview of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawingsdit is believed that a clear understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in theart. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary. l

It is to' be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims.

Having described the invention, whatis claimed as new is:

1. A pew comprising upstanding end supports including a frame having a horizontal bar and a rearwardly inclined bar, a seat and back frame including a plurality of spaced parallel horizontal seat supports and a plurality of spaced parallel rearwardly inclined back supports, a seat plank recessed in the seat supports ilush with the upper edges thereof, a back supporting bar rigidly connecting the back supports to each other and with'the front edge of the back supporting bar ilush with the front edges of the back supports, means securing the ends of the seat and back frame to the horizontal and inclined bars of the end supports, a covering of sheet material on the sides of the end supports, and a covering of'stiif sheet material on the seat and back frame.

2. A pew comprising upstanding end supports including a frame having a horizontal bar and a rearwardly inclined bar, a seat and back frame including a plurality of spaced parallel horizontal seat supports and a plurality of spaced parallel rearwardly inclined back supports, a seat plank recessed in the seat supports flush with the upper edges thereof, a supporting bar for the seat plank, t back supporting bar rigidly connecting the back supports to each otherand with the front edge of the back supporting bar ilush with the front edges ofthe back supports, means securing the ends of the seat and back frame to the horizontal and inclined bars of the end supports, a'covering of sheet material on the sides of the end supports, and a coveringof stiif sheet material on the seat and back frame.

3. The combination of claim 2 wherein the supporting bar for the seat plank is anchored to the seat'supports by av dado construction and the back supporting bar is anchored to the back supports by a dado construction.
