SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 251,840, dated January 3, 1882. Application filed November 15, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, ROBERT W. DAVIS and DANIEL DAVIS, citizens of the United States, residing'at Elmira, inthe county of Ohemung and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wheel-Hubs; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specificatiomand to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon. Figure 1 of thedrawings is a longitudinal central section of our invention; Fig. 2, an inner plan view of one of the clampingplates,

4, a detail view of one of the spokes; and Fig. 5 is a vertical transverse section, in detail, taken through the clamping-plates and spokes. i The presentinvention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in the manner otsecuring metal spokes to the hubs of wheels; and ,the object thereof is to provide means whereby all the pressure is thrown against the ribs at the center of the spokes and does not touch the edges thereof until it reaches their extreme end next to the axle-box, thereby preventing crystallization atthat point by allowing the vibration to extend down intothe hub.
0 These objects we attain by the construction substantially as shown in the drawings and hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, A repre sents the axle box, of the usual construction,
having at one end an annular'flange, a, and at its opposite end screw-threads b, for the reception of a screw cap or nut, B. Around this axle box A are: located two shells or hollow metal sections, 0 D, which together form the 40 outer portion of the hub or body thereof. The
section 0 has an annular shoulder, 0, against which abuts the flange a of the axle-com and the section D an annular shoulder, d, against which fits the annular rim 0 upon the inner end of the screw cap or nut 13 at its periphery.
Between the inner ends of the sections 0 D are located two clamping-plates, E F, which have annular recesses upon their outer sides near their periphery to receive the inner faces or ends of the shells orsections O D. The clamping-plates E F near their outer periphery have a series of bolt-holes, f, for receiving the bolts g, by which means the plates are securely held together by the employment of suitable screwnuts, h, engaging with the screw-threaded ends 5 5 of the bolts. These bolt-holes f are so located with relation to the periphery of the plates E F that the heads of said bolts and the screwnuts will come nearly in contact with the inner ends or rims of the sections 0 D, thereby 6o preventing them from unscrewing or getting loose.
The metal spokes G have ribbed sides 5, and at their inner ends notches k, as shown in Fig.
4, said spokes fitting within radial grooves l upon the inner faces of each of the clampingplates E F, the notches It fitting over transverse bars at upon the inner surface or face of the plate E.
The annular recesses upon the outer sides of 70. the clamping-plates E F, which receive theinner faces or ends of the sections (3 D, are formed by casting said plates with annular rims a.
The grooves l, which clamp the spokeribs i, sustain all the side and lateral pressure without bearing on the edges of the spoke at or' near the periphery of the clamping-plates, the inner ends of each spoke being fitted to the periphery of the axle box A, and firmly held there by the notch k and its counterparttransverse bar m, which, when clamped together, form a lockand hold it firmly by means of the screw bolts and nuts.
The clamping-plates are so made that they do not quite meet together, thereby allowing room for further tightening and clamping the ribs of the spokes by means of the bolts.
Having now fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a metal hub having the usual shells or hollow metal sections, the combination, with the spoke formed with ribbed sides and a" notch near its inner end, of two independent clam ping-plates located between said shells or hollow sections, one of said clampingplates having on its inner face radiating grooves provided with transverse bars forming a counter to and fitting the notched spoke, substan-" tially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a metal wheel-hub the combination, with a ribbed and notched spoke of clampingplates having on their inner faces radial grooves correspondin g with and fitting the ribbed spokes, said grooves being so formed as to bear against the ribs of the spoke and relieve the edges thereof from contact with said clamping-plates, siibstantially as and for the purpose set; forth.
3, In a metal wheel-hub, the combination of the ribbed spoke G, having notch 7c, clampingplates'E-F. with their radial grooves'l and transverse bars m hub shells or sections 0 D, axle-box A, cap or nut B, and clamping-bolts g, substantially as described.
