SPECIFICATION forming part 0f Letters Patent No. 625,000, dated May 16, 1899.

Be it known that I, EDWIN D. WASSELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pitts-- burg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Vehicle- Vheels; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact'description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My present invention relates to metallic vehicle-wheels, and has for its object certain improvements in construction whereby a coinpact and durable wheel is produced at the minimum cost, as will be fully disclosed in the following specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawings,wh ich form a vertical longitudinal section of my improved wheel; Fig. 2, a vertical transverse section on the line a: Fig. l, looking in the direction of the arrow; Fig. 3, a side elevation of the axle-box detached; Fig. 4, a side elevation, partly in section, of part of a spoke, showing a modification of the construction; Fig. 5, a vertical longitudinal section of one of the felly spoke-boxes, and Fig. 6 a vertical transverse section of the same.
Reference being had to the drawings and the letters thereon, A indicates the hub of the wheel, which is made of two metallic sections screw-threaded extension c and a shoulder d and the latter an externally-screw-threaded extension c and a shoulder f. The sections are cored out at g h to reduce their weight and are secured together by the screw-threaded extensions c and e. Within the sections a b of the hub and extending beyond the outer end of each is a sleeve t 7c, each having an outwardly projecting ilange Z at its inner end, by which the sleeves are secured in the sections a b and are engaged by the shoulder d of the section a and the inner end m of the section b, with gaskets n, of rubber or soft metal, between the flanges, as shown in Fig. l of the drawings.

The axle-box B is of a diameter to t the bore of thefilling-pieces o p, is provided with a collar t at its inner end, against which the outer end of the filling-piece 1J bears, and with longitudinal grooves u, in which the inner ends of the spokes of the wheel rest, so that the thrust of the spokes in the grooves prevent the axle-box turning in the hub, in which function they are assisted by thepieces s s, extending into and filling said grooves.
The spokes C extend through the thickest portion of the sections c b of the hub, as shown in Fig. l, and by which it will be seen that the inner spokes pass through the screwjoint of the said sections by passing through the extensions c and e, and the possibility of the sections separating is thereby prevented.
Thel spokes also pass through the filling-l pieces s s and with their rounded heads o or inner ends of the spokes rest in the grooves u of the axle-box B. The spokes are tubular and for light vehicles are provid ed with short solid steel rods w, which extend beyond the hub and upon which the heads y are formed, and upon the shoulder of which head the inner end of the tubular spoke rests. rlhese rods serve to stiffen'the spokes at the point subject to the greatest strain and prevent the spokes being bent at the hub, as frequently For heavy vehicles the spokes D (shown in Fig. 4) may be used. In this construction the spoke is reinforced by an outer tube y, which enters the hub and is provided with a rounded ende to engage the groove in the axle-box.
The outer end of the spoke is corrugated, as at ct, and is secured in the felly by means of a box b', which I designate the felly spokebox, in which the spoke is embedded in soft .said axle-box and between the inner ends of y metal or rubber, as shown in Fig. 1. The felly spoke-box is provided with a bar or seat c', having a concave outer surface d to receive the convex inner surface e' of the tire F, a boss F on the inner side of the bar c' to enter the end of the tubular spoke, and with anges g g to confine the soft metal or rubber in which the spokes are embedded.
The tire F is provided with inwardly-projecting flanges h h', which engage the sides of the felly E, which anges,\vith the concavoconvex joint between felly spoke-box and the tire, serve to prevent the tire slipping off the felly.
It will be observed that the grooves u in the axle-box extend from the shoulder i to the outer end of the box to enable the box to be removed when worn out.

In assembling the parts of the hub the filling-pieces o p and s s and the sleeves 'L' k are inserted from the inner ends of the sections a b and forced into position by pressure, when the gasket n is inserted and the sections d l) are secured together. The holes for the spokes are then drilled in the hub and the hub finished, after which the spokes are inserted in the hub, the felly applied, and the tire shrunk on the fellyin the usual manner. Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a metallic vehicle wheel, tubular spokes reinforced at their inner ends by metallic rods having heads at their inner ends and extending beyond the hub of the4 wheel, in combination with an axle-box provided with grooves engaged by said reinforces.
2. In a metallic vehicle-wheel, tubular reinforced spokes, the reinforce having rounded inner ends and extending beyond the hub of the wheel, in combination with a grooved axle-box and filling-pieces, said spokes engaging the filling-pieces and the grooves in the axle-box.`
3. In a metallic vehicle wheel, tubular spokes reinforced at theirinner ends, the reinforce extending beyond the hub of the wheel and provided with rounded innerends, in combination with a grooved axle-box engaged by the spokes.
4. In a metallic vehicle-wheel, ahub in two sections having overlapping screw-threaded extensions, and an axle-box provided with longitudinal grooves, in combination with spokes extending through said extensions and engaging the grooves in the axle-box.
l5. In a metallic vehicle-wheel, a hub in two connected sections, in combination with' sleeves within said sections and extending beyond each section and having anges at their inner ends which are engaged by the sections.
6. In a metallic vehicle-wheel, a hub in two connected sections, in combination with sleeves within and extending from each section and having lianges at their inner ends which are engaged by the sections, and a gasket between the outer surface of the flanges.
7. In a metallic vehicle-wheel a sectional hub in combination with a grooved axle-box, filling-pieces engaging the grooves in the axlebox, and spokes engaging said filling-pieces and the grooves in the axle-box.
8. In a metallic vehicle-wheel, a hub consisting of two connected sections, sleeves within said sections and extending beyond the ends thereof, and filling-pieces having concentric 'flanges or ribs to support said sleeve, and filling-pieces through which the inner ends of the spokes extend.
9. In a metallic vehiclewheel, tubular spokes having rounded inner ends, in combination with a hub, and an axle-box having seats to receive the rounded ends of the spokes, and filling-pieces engaged by the spokes.
lO. In a metallic vehicle-wheel,a felly spokebox having a bar provided with inwardly-projecting flanges,a filling inclosed bythe flanges, and a boss to engage the end of 4the spoke.
1l. In a metallic vehicle-wheel a felly spokebox having a bar provided with a concave outer surface, inwardly-projecting flanges, a filling inclosed by the iianges, and a boss to engage the end of the spoke.
