4 Claims. (01. era-414) The present invention relatesto new and iusefu improvements in yarn reels for use wvhen lunraveling yarn from askein and the inventionhas for its .primaryobject to provide .a reel 011?.Whih
the yarn may be wound to maintain the same against tangling while subsequently windin the yarn into a ball.
A further object of the invention is to provide a yarn winding reel of this character constructed from collapsible parts whereby the reel may be dismantled and stored in a compact form when not in use.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which may be manufactured from inexpensive material and which at the same time is efficient and reliable in use and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view;
Figure 2 is a top plan view;
Figure 3 is an end elevational view;
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on a line 4 of Figure 2, and
Figure 5 is a vertical sectional view taken on a line 55 of Figure 1.
Referring now to the drawings in detail wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates a base generally and which includes an elongated strip of wood or other light weight inexpensive material ii on the outer end of which is positioned a cross strip 1 and secured in cross relation on the strip 6 by means of a dowel 8. To the underside of the cross strip 7, at the outer end thereof, are cemented blocks 9 to support the ends of the cross strips against tilting movement.
An elongated block H) is positioned on the strip 6 of the base 5, the block l0 and strip 6 being coextensive in width, one end of the block hav ing an upright ll of flat material secured thereto by a dowel 12, the outer side of the post hearing against the cross strip i. The post is formed with a tapered yarn feeding opening Ila.
The other end of the block I0 is formed with a vertical bore l3 in which a dowel pin I4 is positioned projecting above the upper flat substantially horizontal edge l3a of the block and ,2 r i i h a e ade eta d e ral y at $15 is i ma' ed for hor z n al ro a y m vement as washer I16 is positioned between the reel and the upper surface of the block l-fl.
7 2112, re diecen ruoted o s ores ii and-id formed of flat strips of material arranged in cross relation and journaled on the upper end of the dowel pin :4. A dowel l9 connects the spokes l1 and It to each other for rotation as a unit.
Angle members 20 are suitably secured on the upper surface of the spoke l! at the ends thereof to form outwardly opening channels at the ends of the spoke and similar yokes or channel members 21 are secured or integrally formed with plates 22 slidably mounted on the upper surface of the spokes l8 adjacent the outer ends thereof.
The plates 22 are provided with longitudinally extending slots 23 in which the guide pins 24 and bolts and wing nuts 25 are slidably received, the guide pins and bolts extending upwardly from the spoke l8 through the slots to secure the yokes or channel members 2| in radially adjusted position on the spokes.
In the operation of the device as the yarn is unraveled the same is fed through the opening i la in post i l to hold the yarn horizontally while it is wound on the yokes or channel members 2|] and 2| of the spokes as the latter are rotated. The radial adjustment of the yokes 2 I varies the diameter of the reel.
I claim:
1. A reel comprising a base, a vertical shaft rising therefrom, a plurality of double-ended spokes journalled on the shaft, means detachably connecting the spokes to each other in crossed relation for rotation as a unit, a yoke at each end of the spokes for winding strands of material thereon, said yokes including base strips engaging the spokes and provided with longitudinal slots, guide pins fixed to the spokes slidably engaging the slots in said base strips, and adjustable fasteners carried by the spokes for holding the base strips against sliding movement, said fasteners being spaced parallel to said guide pins and received in said slots to coact with the guide pins in preventing lateral movement of said yokes relative to said spokes.
2. A reel comprising a base, an elongated block carried by the base having an upper edge spaced parallel to the longitudinal axis of the base, said block having a vertical bore extending through the upper edge at right angles thereto, a shaft fixed to the base and extending outwardly through the vertical bore in said block, a bearing washer embracing the shaft and engaging the upper edge of the block, a plurality of doubleended spokes journalled on the shaft and bearing upon the washer, means detachably connecting the spokes to each other in crossed relation for rotation as a unit, a yoke at each end of the spokes including base strips having longitudinal guide slots, guide pins carried by said spokes for slidably engaging the slots provided in the base strips, and adjustable fasteners carried by the spokes for holding the yokes against sliding move ment.
3. The combination of claim 2 wherein said.
means detachably connecting the spokes to each other includes a dowel pin connecting the centers of the spokes to each other.
4. A reel comprising a base, an elongated block carried by the base having an upper edge spaced parallel to the longitudinal axis of the base, said block having a vertical bore extending through the upper edge at right angles thereto, a shaft fixed to the base and extending outwardly through the vertical bore in said block, a bearing washer embracing the shaft and engaging the upper edge of the block, a plurality of doubleended spokes journalled on the shaft and bearing REFERENCES CITED The following references are of record in the file of this patent:
