Claims.
This invention has relation to a dispenser adapted to be attached to a bottle, or other receptacle, containing a liquid substance, such as catsup, mustard, dressing, etc., to be removed from the bottle or receptacle in measured quantities.
An object of the invention is to provide a device for dispensing measured amounts of a liquid substance from a bottle or other container having the liquid substance which will be of simple, inexpensive, novel and improved construction.
A further object is to provide a liquid substance dispensing device of the character as stated wherein will be incorporated several desirable and improved features and characteristics of construction which will be novel both as individual entities of the liquid substance dispensing de vice and in combination with each other.
And a further object is to provide a device for dispensing liquid substances which will include features and characteristics of construction as hereinafter set forth.
With the above objects in view, as well as others which will appear as the specification proceeds, the invention comprises the construction, arrangement and combination of parts as now to be fully described and as hereinafter to be specifically claimed, it being understood that the disclosure herein is merely illustrative and intended in no way in a limiting sense, changes in details of construction and arrangement of parts being permissible so long as within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the claims which follow.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification,
Fig. 1 is a central longitudinal sectional view of a dispenser made according to the invention, the view also disclosing, in section, a bottle with which the dispenser is associated;
Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view of the dispenser agreeing with the disclosure of Fig. 1 but showing operative parts of said dispenser in different positions;
Figs. 3 and 4 are central longitudinal sectional views of the dispenser agreeing with the disclosures of Figs. 1 and 2 but showing operative parts of said dispenser in still other difierent positions;
Fig. 5 is an elevational view of a pump plunger of the dispenser as when removed from the remainder of said dispenser; and
Fig. 6 is an elevational view, partially in section and partially broken away, of a hollow slide valve or sleeve of the dispenser as when removed from the remainder of said dispenser.
A stationary hollow casing or cap member of the new and improved dispenser is denoted I0. While said stationary hollow casing or cap member Iil could be otherwise constructed, it is in the disclosure as made of. an integral mass of plastic material.
A body portion II of the hollow casing or cap member I0 is of general cylindrical configuration and includes an annular flange or skirt portion I2 at its periphery having an internal thread I3 adapted to be turned down upon an external thread I4 on the mouth or neck of a bottle or other container, such, for example, as the bottle indicated I5.
An extension portion I6 of saidhollow casing or cap member I0 also is of general cylindrical configuration as disclosed. More explicitly, said extension portion IB is constituted as an elon gated member which is integral with and extends outwardly or downwardly from a central part of the body portion II in spaced, substantially concentric relation to the annular flange or skirt portion I2. Desirably, the construction and arrangement will be such that whenthe dispenser is applied to a bottle or other container the outer or lower end of the extension portion I6 of said dispenser will be situated in proximate or adjacent relation to the bottom wall of said bottle or container and theexterior side surface or surfaces of said extension portion IE will be situated in spaced relation to the side wall or walls of the bottle or container, about as disclosed in Fig. l of the drawing.
An elongated pump chamber I! of the stationary hollowcasing or cap member ID, cylindrical as disclosed, is defined at its outer or lower end by a transverse closure well I8 at the end of the extension portion I6 spaced from the body portion II and at its circumference by an internal cylindrical wall I9 of said extension portion. A concavity 20, of cylindrical configuration as disclosed, in the outer or upper surface of the body portion I I is in surrounding relation'to the inner or upper end of the elongated pump chamber IT, and said elongated pump chamber is continuous from the location of said concavity 2D to said transverse closure wall I8. A base wall 2I of the body portion I I, defining the base of the concavity 20, is in surrounding relation to the inner or upper endof the pump chamber I! and as shown is in perpendicular relation to the longitudinal axis of the extension portion I6. In Figa- Z-the pum plungerand-the hollow slide valve or sleeve are disclosed situated as when said pump plunger manually has been pushed irrwardly to extent just sufli'cient to'ca-u'se the outer or lower end "or said hollow-slide'valve or'sleeve to be engaged against the interior surface of the transverse closure wall 18; the inlet port 22 tobe 'cl'osed' to passage ofliquid substance backwardly through said inlet port,.and the outlet ports 30 and 24 tube-alined: Of course, inward movesaid hollow slide valve or sleeve in response to inward movement of the hollow slide valve or sleeve, instead of by engagement of the outer or lower end of said hollow slide valve or sleeve with the transverse closure wall I8, as will be understood. Supposing the pump plunger and the hollow slide valve or sleeve to be situated as in said Fig. 2, or as when movement inwardly of the bottle of said hollow slide valve or sleeve has just been arrested by engagement of the outer or upper limiting surface of the elongated slot 29 with the stop piece or peg 32, and manual depression of said pump plunger to be continued, the pump plunger will be moved inwardly or downwardly of the bottle relative to the hollow slide valve or sleeve thus to cause liquid substance to be emitted from the discharge outlet 23 by way of said outlet ports 30 and 24.
In Fig. 3 the pump plunger and the hollow slide valve or sleeve are disclosed as when said pump plunger has been pushed inwardly of the bottle to its extreme extent so that the upper limiting surface 34 of the elongated slot 3| is engaged with the stop piece or peg 32 while said hollow slide valve or sleeve also is at its extreme inner position. Supposing the pump plunger when situated as in said Fig. 3 to be released, said pump plunger and the hollow slide valve or sleeve initially will be moved outwardly or upwardly of the bottle together as a unit, in response to resilient action of the compression coil spring 28, until the inner or lower limiting surface 35 of the elongated slot 29 of the hollow slide valve or sleeve has engaged the stop piece or peg 32. During this initial outward or upward movement of said pump plunger and said hollow slide valve or sleeve, liquid substance will be per mitted to enter the interior space within the hollow slide valve or sleeve adjacent the outer or lower end of said pump plunger by way of the inlet port 22, and at the same time the outlet port 30 will be moved out of alinement with the outlet port 24.
In Fig. 4 the pump plunger and the hollow slide valve or sleeve are disclosed situated as when said pump plunger has been moved outwardly by the compression coil spring 28 to extent just sufiicient to cause the inner or lower limiting surface 35 of said hollow slide valve to be engaged against the stop piece or peg 32. As shown in said Fig. 4, the inlet port 22 is open to the interior of the lower portion of the pump chamber I1 and the outlet port 30 is out of communication with the outlet port 24. Supposing the pump plunger and the hollow slide valve or sleeve to be situated as in Fig. 4 and outward movement of said pump plunger by the compression coil spring 28 to be continued until the parts are situated as disclosed in Fig. 1, the pump plunger will be moved outwardly or upwardly of the bottle relative to the hollow slide valve or sleeve thus to cause liquid substance to be drawn or sucked through the inlet port 22 into the outer or lower portions of the pump chamber I1 and the hollow slide valve or sleeve 25.
It will be obvious that the dispenser as illustrated and described can be manipulated to cause measured amounts of a liquid substance to be dispensed from a container such as the bottle l5. With each outward movement of the pump plunger 26, adapted to be accomplished by resilient action of the compression coil spring 28, a measured quantity of the liquid substance will be loaded into the dispensing device, and
with each inward movement of said pump plunger, adapted manually to be accomplished, a measured quantity of the liquid substance will be removed from said dispensing device. The discharging operations will occur with movement of the parts of the dispenser from their positions as in Fig. 1 through their positions as in Fig. 2 to their positions as in Fig. 3, and the re-loading operations will occur with movement of the parts of said dispenser from their positions as in said Fig. 3 through their positions as in Fig. 4 to their positions as in said Fig. 1.
What is claimed is: l
l. A liquid substance dispensing device comprising a hollow casing providing a pump chamber open at one of its ends and closed at its opposite end, a hollow slide valve mounted in said pump chamber for movement longitudinally of the pump chamber, a pump plunger mounted in said hollow slide valve for frictional movement longitudinally of the hollow slide valve, said hollow casing including an inlet port opening to said pump chamber at a location adjacent its closed end and an outlet port leading from the pump chamber at a location spaced inwardly of said inlet port, and said hollow slide valve including an outlet port adapted selectively to be situated in and out of alinement with said outlet port of said hollow casing, each of said hollow slide valve and said pump plunger including an elongated slot, the slot in said pump plunger being longer than the slot in said hollow slide valve and means including a stop piece having an exterior portion thereof fixed in said hollow casing and an interior end portion thereof situated within the elongated slots of the hollow slide valve and the pump plunger for limiting the extent of longitudinal movement of both said hollow slide valve and said pump plunger the difference in the lengths of said slots in said pump plunger and hollow slide valve permitting longitudinal movement of the pump plunger outwardly of the hollow slide valve after movement of said hollow slide valve has been arrested.

A liquid substance dispensing device comprising a hollow casing providing a pump chamber open at one of its ends and closed at its opposite end, a hollow slide valve mounted in said pump chamber for free movement of reciprocation longitudinally of the pump chamber in direction toward and away from the closed end of said pump chamber, a pump plunger snugly mounted in said hollow slide valve for frictional movement of reciprocation longitudinally of the hollow slide valve in direction toward and away from said closed end of the pump chamber, said hollow easing including an inlet port opening to a portion of said pump chamber at a location adjacent its closed end and an outlet port leading from the pump chamber at a location spaced inwardly of said inlet port, said hollow slide valve including an outlet port adapted selectively to be situated in and out of alinement with said outlet port of said. hollow casing and said pump plunger being adapted to be manipulated selectively to cause said inlet port to be in communication with an interior portion of said hollow slide valve open to said pump plunger while the outlet ports of said hollow casing and hollow slide valve are out of alinement and shut off from said interior portion of the hollow slide valve open to the pump plunger while said outlet ports of said hollow casing and hollow slide valve are in alinement, each of said hollow slide valve and said pump plunger including an elongated slot, the slot in said pump plunger being longer than theslot in said hollow slide valve and means including a stop piece having an exterior end portion thereof fixed in said hollow casing and an interior end portion thereof situated within the elongated slots of the hollow slide valve and the pump plunger for limiting the extent of longitudinal movement of both said hollow slide valve and said pump plunger the diiference in the lengths of said slots in said pump plunger and hollow slide valve permitting longitudinal movement of the pump plunger outwardlyof the i101- low slide valve after movement of said hollow slide valve has been arrested.

A liquid substance dispensing device comprising a hollow casing providing a pump chamber open at one of its ends and closed at its opposite end, a hollow slide valve mounted in said pump chamber for free movement of reciprocation longitudinally of the pump chamber in direction toward and away from the closed end of the pump chamber, a pump plunger snugly mounted in said hollow slide valve for frictional movement of reciprocation longitudinally of the hollow slide valve in direction toward and away from said closed end of the pump chamber, said hollow casing including an inlet port opening to a portion of said pump chamber at a location adjacent its closed end and an outlet port leading, from the pump chamber at a location spaced inwardly of said inlet port, said hollow slide valve including an outlet port adapted selectively to be situated in and out of alinement with said outlet port of said hollow casing and said pump plunger being adapted to be manipulat'ed selectively to cause said inlet port to be in communication with an interior portion of said hollow slide valve open to said pump plunger in response to outward movement of the pump plunger while the outlet ports of said hollow casing and hollow slide valve are out of alinement and shut off from said interior portion of the hollow slide valve open to the pump plunger in response to inward movement of said pump plunger while said outlet ports of said hollow casing and hollow slide valve are in alinement, each of said hollow slide valve and said pump plunger including an elongated slot, the slot in said pump plunger being longer than the slot in said hollow slide valve and .ineans including a stop piece having an exterior portion thereof fixed in said hollow casing and an interior portion thereof situated within theelongated slots of the hollow slide valve and the pump plunger for limiting the extent of longitudin-al movement of both said hollow slide valve and said pump plunger, the difference in the lengths of said slots in said puinpplunger and hollow slide valve permitting reciprocation of said pump plunger both inwardly and outwardly of said hollow slide valve after movement of the hollow slide valvehas been arrested.

A liquid substance dispensing, device comprising a hollow casing including abQdyportion adapted to be secured upon a container and an extension portion adapted to be situated within said container, said body portion and. extension portion providing a pump chamber open at its outer end and closed at its inner end, a hollow slide valve mounted in said pump chamberior movement longitudinall of the pump chamber,
r 8 l a pump, plunger mounted in saidhollow slide valve for frictional movement longitudinally of the hollow slide valve, a hand piece upon said pump plunger, said hollow casing includin an inlet port opening to saidpump chamber at a location adjacent its closed end, an outlet port leading from the pump chamber at a location spaced inwardly of said inlet port and a discharge outlet, and said hollow slide valve including, .an outlet port adapted selectively to be situated in and out of alinement with said outlet .port of said hollow casing, a compression coil spring for normally urging said pump plunger outwardly of said pump chamber, each of said hollow slide valve and said pump plunger includingan elongated slot, the slot in said pump plunger being. longer than the slot in said hollow slide valve and means includin a stop piece havingan exterior portion thereof fixed insaid extension portion and an interior portion thereof situated-within the elongated slots of the hollow slide valve and the pump plunger for limiting the extent of longitudinal reciprocation of both said hollow slide valve and said pump plunger the difference in the lengths of said slots insaid pump plunger and hollow slide valve permitting reciprocation of said pump plunger both inwardly and outwardly of said hollow slide valve after movement of the hollow slide valve has been arrested;

A liquid substance dispensing device comprising a hollow casing providing a pump chamber, open at one of its ends and closed at its opposite end, a hollow slide valve mounted-in said pump chamber for movement longitudinally of the pump chamber and including an elongated slot, a pump plunger mounted in said hollow slidevalve for frictional movement longitudinally of the hollow slide valve and including an elongated slot, the slot in said pump plunger being longer than the slot in said hollow slide valve, said hollow casing including an inlet 'port opening to said pump chamber at a location adjacent its closed end and an outlet port leading from the pump chamber at a location spaced inwardly of said inlet port, and said hollow slide valve including an outlet port adapted selectively to be situated, in and out of=alinement with said outlet port ofsaid hollow casing, and means rigid with saidhollow casing including a stop piece situated in the elongated slots of the pump plunger and hollow-slide; valve for limiting the extent of longitudinal reciprocatory movementof both, said hollow slide valve and said pump plunger, the difierence. in the lengths of the slots in said pump plunger and hollow slide-valvepermitting reciprocation of the pump plunger both inwardly and outwardlyof the hollow slide valve after .movement ofsaid hollow slide valve hasbeen arrested,
