Claims.
This invention relates to work desks and is primarily intended for typewriter desks but may be used for other purposes.
An object of the invention is to provide a work desk equipped with a platform which may carry a typewriter or may be used for other work, which platform may be easily and readily adjusted by the operator to different levels, and is securely locked at each adjusted level.
Other objects of the invention will in part be obvious and will in part appear hereinafter.
The invention accordingly comprises an article of manufacture possessing the features, properties, and the relation of elements which will be exemplified in the article hereinafter described, and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the claims.
For a fuller understanding of the nature and objects of the invention reference should be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. l is a top lan view of the desk showing the upper cover folded back and the top of the platform without the typewriter;
Fig. 2 is a section through the center of the desk with a dotted-line showing of the platform in one of its adjusted positions;
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2 looking in the direction of the arrows;
Fig. 4 is a broken view, the part at the left being a front elevation and at the right being a section on th line 4-4 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 5 is a sectional view showing the locking and adjusting mechanism in position ready for adjustment of the platform and in dotted lines as it is locked at adjusted position; and
Fig. 6 is a section on the line 66 of Fig. 2 looking in the direction of the arrows.
The proper adjustment of the typewriter platform in a typewriter desk is of very special importance in that adjustment conforming to the height of the operator, which may be anywhere from 4 ft. to 6 ft. 6 in., is of very special importance both from the standpoint of the health of 2 I that it will house a long carriage typewriter'or any machine not over-11% in. in height by 35 in. in length. There is no desk on the marketthat will house a long carriage typewriter, whichin many offices is placed on ordinary tables or tops of desks.
The drawings show a typical desk A withside walls B, side drawers C, and a folding cover top comprising three hinged sections I, 2, and- 3, which can be folded down as shown in Fig. 5 to cover the typewriting machine, shown diagrammatically at D, when not in use.
The platform of this desk has a flat workcarrying top E, a rear wall 4, and side walls 5, and shows a stiffening rib 6 passing between guides I. This platform is mounted for adjustment to different levels along inclined guides 8 held at their ends, as shown, by screws 9 .into studs 1!] carried by the side Walls of the desk, and, to the extent of the length of the studs, spaced from said side walls. A housing I I shown as screwed to the platform is provided encircling each of the guide members 8 so that the platform may be readily moved along said guide members. I
The top section of the platform is as shown equipped at its end toward the operator with-a hinged section l2 carrying a stop member l3 which, as shown in Fig. 5, when the hinged section is raised contacts with the top of :theplatform E and prevents.an undue raising of the hinged section which might put undue strain upon the connected parts. This hinged section carries on its lower side a member 14 whichhas a rubbing action as shown against the upper endof a bent lever 15 pivoted at I6 to the side wall of the desk platform and carrying at its lower end an anti-friction roll :I'l adapted to fit in any one; of the cut-out depression openings It on the lower side of a long central slot 19 in the guide member 8. As will be seen from Fig. 2, these openings-l8 are shaped in the form of arcs of a circle so that the curve goes in above the roll both up and down. This results in holding the lever l5 inposition against accidental dislodgement in both directions, whether from a tendency to-move up'or down. Its releasing movement is accordingly in a substantial straight line movement out of the depression.
It Will thus be seen by reference to Fig. 2 that if the operator wishes to raise the desk platform from the position shown in full lines in this figure to a position shown in dotted lines, she takes hold of the hinged section l2, inserting the fingers of each hand in the hand holds 20, raising this hinged section slightly to bring it to the position shown in Fig. 5, which turns the lever l5 and raises its lower end out of the depression 18 so that the platform may be readily lowered or raised to a position where, upon dropping down the hinged section 12, it will be again locked in any desired position in any one of the depressions.
The spring 2| anchored to a pin 22 on the platform exerts a pull upon the upper end of the angularlleverlliand thereby. holds ,the lower end of the. locking leverlin position in its depression as shown in Fig. 2. Spring 23 anchored at its upper end to the end wall of the desk and connected at its lower end to the housing H is extended when the desk platform is initslowermost position and accordingly aids the operator in raising the platform to any higher position.
It will thus be seen that the construction shown accomplishes in an easy and practical manner the stated result of providing a work platform of a desk which may be adjusted to different "heights 'byzmoving it vertically, and preferably '55 sshown a'long an inclined path, so that this 'deskplatform 'maybe readily adjusted to any suitable height depending upon the height of the operator and-the use'towhich the-deskplatform is to be put. I
Sin'ce certain changes may be made in the eabove 'cons'truction and different embodiments of the invention could *be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter -'contained in "the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted =as'illust-rative and not in -'a limiting :sense.
