COMBINATION TABLE. AND DESK Filed May 5, 1947 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 INVENTOR ATTORNEYS Patented May 30, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to furniture, the primary object of the invention being to provide a furniture piece which may be readily converted from a table into a convenient desk, or vice versa.
An important object of the invention is to provide a furniture piece in the form of a table having hinged leaves and a vertically movable desk section, means being provided for operating the desk section with the movement of one of the leaves to its extended position, the operating means being capable of being thrown out of use, permitting the hinged leaves of the table to be elevated without moving the desk section to a position for use.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts, hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangements of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a furniture piece constructed in accordance with the invention, the desk section thereof being shown as elevated for use.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view through the table, the desk section being shown as in its lowered position.
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmental perspective view illustrating the curved desk section operating arms.
Figure 5 is a view illustrating the means for securing one end of the operating cable of the device, to the hinged table leaf.
Figure 6 is a fragmental perspective View of one of the leaf supporting arms of the table.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the reference character 5 indicates the top of a table and the reference character 6 indicates the legs of the table, which are secured thereto, the legs of the table being connected by pieces I which provide a housing for the desk operating arms, to be hereinafter more fully described.
The table top is formed with a rectangular cut-out portion of a size to accommodate the desk section 8, the top of the desk section closing the opening in the table top to provide a table.
The desk section is provided with pigeon holes 9 and drawers I0 for holding the usual pens and pencils, envelopes and papers, commonly stored in desks.
The end pieces I are formed with grooves to accommodate the ribs H and are secured to the ends [2 of the desk section, thereby guiding the desk section in its vertical movements.
Secured between the front and rear pieces I, are bars Hi, to which the bearings M are secured, the bearings l4 receiving the ends of the control rod l5 that extends along the rear of the table, as clearly shown by Figure 2 of the drawings.
Secured to the control rod to move therewith, are curved arms l6 that have rollers I! mounted at the free ends thereof, the rollers l1 contacting with the bottom IB of the desk section.
The reference character [9 indicates an arm which is secured to the rod IE to move therewith, at a point between the arms I6, the arm l9 being shown as extended downwardly, where it is formed with an eye in which one end of the cable 20 is connected. This cable 20 extends through a, guide opening 2| formed adjacent to the front piece I, from which the cable extends to a point adjacent to the front leaf 22 of the table. Secured to one end of the cable 20 is a pin 23 that has a notch 24 formed in its edge, the pin 23 being designed to fit within the opening 25, formed in the keeper block 26, which is secured to the under surface of the leaf 22. Slidably mounted within the keeper block 26 is a pin 21 that is adapted to fit within the notch 24, when the pin 23 is inserted in the opening 25, thereby firmly securing the cable to the hinged leaf 22 of the table, so that movement of the hinged leaf 22 will result in a relative movement of the arms 16, to raise the desk section or allow the desk section to lower to a position wherein the top of the desk section will lie flush with the table top.
When the leaves of the table are elevated, supporting bars 28 which are hingedly connected to the front and rear pieces 1, by means of hinges 29, are swung outwardly to the position as shown by Figure 2, holding the leaves elevated.
From the foregoing it will be seen that due to the construction shown and described, with the operating arms Is in the position shown by Figure 3, the desk section will be forced upwardly by the arms 16 when the leaf section 22 of the table is elevated. Since the cable is of a length to extend between the arms I9 and table top 22, this movement will be insured.
As the table top 22 is raised, the rollers I! will roll over the bottom of the desk section forcing the desk section upwardly to the position shown by sheet one of the drawings. The furniture may now be used as a desk.
By lowering the leaf 22, the weight of the desk section will cause the desk section to return to its normal or lowermost position.
Should it be desired to elevate the leaves of the table, without elevating the desk section, it is only necessary to disconnect the pin 23 from the keeper block 26. This is accomplished by pulling the pin 21 and removing the pin 23. The leaf 22 may now be swung upwardly without moving the desk section, and the table used in its extended condition.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
A furniture piece comprising a table having hinged leaves and a table top formed with an opening, a desk section fitted within the opening, the top of the desk section adapted toclose the opening and provide a table top when the desk section-is-in-its-1owered position, a horizontal rod mounted under the desk section, curved operat ring-arms havingone of' their respective ends sex'curedxto the rod to movetherewith, rollers on the free ends of the curved arms, said rollers adapted to engage the bottom of the desk section at points adjacent to the center thereof, elevating the desk section as the arms swing upwardly in the arcs of circles, an actuating arm secured to the rod to move therewith, a cable connected with the actuating arm, means for removably connecting one end of the cable to one of the leaves of the table, and said cable adapted to rotate the rod operating the arms ;when the leaf section with which the cable is connected, is elevated.
