My present invention relates to an improved wall paper cutter and more particularly to a cutter machine adapted to simultaneously trim both edges of paper which has been pasted or before pasting so that the edges will be straightand true and thereby enable the operator to prepare the paper for hanging with a minimum of time and labor.
Ordinarily, the paper is pasted, folded longitudinally, and the edges are then cut by shears, resulting in lost time and effort. According to my invention, the machine will cut down the time and also trim the paper in a more efficient manner.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention according to the best mode I have thus far devised, but it will be understood that various changes and alterations may be made in the exemplified structure within the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of the device of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view at line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a side elevational view at line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical sectional view at 4--4 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a transverse vertical sectional view of the main cutter shaft with the central cutter disk elevated.
Referring now to the drawings I provide a pair of supports 2 having legs 4, of conventional design, and upon these supports I employ a pair of base boards 6 and 8. Pins l0 secure the spaced boards in alignment and permit adjustment laterally of theboards.
The outer edges of the boards are covered with zinc strips l2 replaceable when worn, and the edges of the strips are provided with preferably chrome straight edges I4 for aligning the paper to be cut.
Below the straight edges and secured to the boards I utilize the tubular guide tubes l6 which guide the frames iii in longitudinal movement along the edges of the boards. In the brackets 20 I position ball bearing rollers 22 engaging the under side of the tubes and lugs 24 extend outwardly of the frames.
The frames are connected by a tubular shaft 26 having a securing head 28 and a telescoping rod 30 secured by nuts 32 in a frame. A ring 34 on the inner end of the shaft 26 carries a set screw in Fig. 1.
2 36 so that the length of the combined shaft and rod may be adjusted to accommodate wall paper of various widths.
On the outsides of the frames [8 I use the journals 38 secured by screens 4!] for the threaded bolts 42 having knurled heads 44, and upon the upper ends of the bolts 42 I mount the yokes 46 forked at 48 in which the hangers 50 are pivotally supported at 52. The set screws 53 in the yoke limit the downward movement of the shaft 54 supported in the hangers 50 and on this shaft I have positioned the cutting disks 56 slidable thereon. The extension 58 of the shaft 54 permits adjustment of the frames relative thereto.
Intermediate the ends of the shaft 54 I use a ring 60 having a handle 62 and angularly thereto I extend the arm 64 supporting a, cutter disk 66 which may be employed to sever a strip of wall paper centrally or otherwise as desired.
The spring 68 urges the shaft 54 downward against the set screw 53 and the shaft and disks together with the frames may be rolled along the boards by pushing the handle 62 s to the right A knurled knob 12 on the shaft 54 affords a means for rotating the shaft on the hangers to lift the cutter disks 56 out of the way to insert a strip of paper which normally comes in rolls which are supported on the rollers 12 in the arms 14.
The device of my invention is obviously simple to manufacture and use and will result in more accurate trimming and a saving in time of cutting and of application of roll paper.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a wall paper trimmer the combination with a base, of a carriage longitudinally slidable along the base, said carriage comprising side frames telescopic means connecting said frames whereby said carriage is laterally extensible to accommodate wall paper of various widths cutting disks for trimming the edges of the paper, an intermediate disk for severing the paper longitudinally, a transverse shaft in the carriage for the disks, and means permitting a pivotal movement of the shaft to permit insertion of paper between the disks and the base.
2. In a wall paper trimmer the combination with a base, of a carriage longitudinally slidable along the base, cutting disks for trimming the edges of the paper, an intermediate disk for severing the paper longitudinally, a transverse shaft in the carriage for the disks, means for adjusting the shaft and disks with relation to 2,5 1 5,979 "i ii; 5
the base, and eccentric supporting means permitting pivotal movement of the shaft and disks to permit the positioning of the strip of paper to be trimmed.
3. In a wall paper trimmer the combination with a base, of a, carriage longitudinall slidable along the base, said carriage comprising side frames, tubular shafts fixed to one of said frames, rods fixed to the other of said frames and telescopically received-in said shafts whereby said carriag'is laterally extensible cutting disks for trimming the edges of the paper, an intermediate disk for severing the paper longitudinally, a
means for adjusting the shaft and disks with relation to the base, and eccentric supporting means permitting pivotal movement of the shaft and disks to permit the positioning of the strip of paper to be trimmed.
