Claims.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in nail clippers and the primary object of the present invention is to provide a nail clipper so designed as to retain the clipped nail in a deposit chamber for convenient removal at a selected time.
Another important objectof the present invention is to provide .a nail clipper embodying .novel and improved fulcrum means for the jaw actuating lever.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a nail clipper that is extremely neat and attractive in appearance, and occupies very little space when in a non-used position.
A still further aim of the present invention is to provide a nail clipper that is simple and practical in construction, strong and reliable in use, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the I same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:

Figure 8 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view showing the cutter elements in position for engaging a nail to be clipped, the lever being depressed partially; and,
Figure 9 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view showing the cutter elements in clamping engagement with each other.
.Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration, there is disclosed a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the numeral l0 represents .a relatively stationary jaw provided with a preferably arcuate cutter element [2 at its forward end.
Fixedly secured to the reduced rear end of'the stationary jaw ID by any suitable means, is the reduced rear end of a resilient movable jaw M having an arcuate cutter element I6 at its forward end directly opposing cutter l2. Both the stationary jaw andthe movable jaw are preferably egg shaped to add to the attractive appearance of the device.
Projecting outwardly from one side of the stationary jaw III, is a substantially triangular longitudinal side member 18, and also projecting Y outwardly from the opposite side of jaw Ill near cutter I2, is a second side member 20. Integrally formed with each of the side members and projecting outwardly therefrom, are opposed ears or fulcrums 22 provided with apertures 24 for journally receiving a transverse pin 26. The sides of the movable jaw are notched as at 21, to engage these ears for guiding movement of jaw l4 relative to jaw Ill.
The numeral 28 represents a lever or jaw actuating member substantially egg shaped in form, having its enlarged end 30 pivoted on pin 26, its free end 32 pointed and its substantially flat inner face is provided with a file surface '34. Longitudinal slots 36 are provided in the enlarged end 30 of the lever to loosely engage the cars 22 for guiding the pivotal movement of the lever relative to jaw I4.
The numeral 38 represents a slide closure member substantially egg shaped in form and provided with a longitudinal channel bracket 40 on its substantially flatinner face that engages a longitudinal substantially rectangular arm M integrally formed with side member 20. The side portionsof the outer face of member 38 are preferably inclined and a substantially egg shaped finger gripping knob 44 is suitably secured to-the outer face of the closure.
.At the pointed rear end ofthe closure member and projecting inwardly from the substantially flat face thereof, is a lug 46 that lockably engages a notch 48 in the reduced rear portion of one of the sides of jaw Ill-when the closure completely closes the opening between jaw Ill and jaw I4 at one side.
J ournaled in apertures 50 provided in side members l8 and 20 are the terminal portions of a transverse pivot pin 52 that is suitably secured to one end of a substantially V-shaped member 54. Projecting inwardly from one transverse edge of member 54 is an integral plate 56 having its free transverse edge arcuate to conform to the curvature of cutter elements I2 and I6.
The numeral 58 represents a pair of coiled springs having their terminals turned outwardly and diverging to respectively engage recesses 60 in the jaw I6 and apertures 62 in the member 54 for normally holding the arcuate free edgeof plate 56 against the inner face of cutter l2 when jaws l and 14 are spread apart, and also for retaining a free edge of member 54 against the rear inner portion of a forward detent 64 formed in jaw l4, as best shown in Figure 6 of the drawings.
Slidably mounted in a longitudinal slot 66 sary to push finger knob M forwardly so that.
fulcrum 10 engages detent 64, as shown inFigure 7. By then lowering the lever 28 toward jaw l4, plate 56 is pivoted toward cutter l6, as shown best in Figure 8, whereby a fingernail may be inserted between the cutters and also between plate 56 and cutter l2.
When the lever is fully depressed, as shown in Figure 9, the nail inserted between the cutter is clipped and the arcuate edge of plate 56 bears against the inner face of cutter I6. Upon release of the lever 28, plate 56 will pivot downwardly toward jaw Ill whereby the free arcuate edge of the plate 56 will force the clipped nail onto the stationary jaw It.
To remove the clipped nail it is merely necessary to slide the closure 38 forwardly, as shown in Figure 5, whereby the device may be tilted so that the clipped nail will fall outwardly therefrom.
In View of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully'comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A nail clipper comprising a stationary jaw provided with a cutter at one end, a movable jaw secured at one end to said stationary jaw, said movable jaw having a cutter at one end opposing said first mentioned cutter, longitudinal side members carried by said stationary jaw for guiding the movement of said movable jaw, said jaws and said side members forming a compartment, one of said side members having an opening, a removable closure for said opening, means guiding longitudinal movement of said closure relative to the opening, means for locking said closure in a closed position to the opening, means for actuating said movable jaw, and means carried by said side members for depositing a clipped nail into the compartment formed by said jaws and said side members.
2. The combination of claim 1 wherein said actuating means includes a lever pivoted between said side members, detents provided in said movable jaw, and a fulcrum slidably mounted on said lever for selectively engaging detents provided in said movable jaw.
3; The combination of claim 2 wherein the outer end of said fulcrum is provided with a finger gripping portion projecting outwardly from closure, said stationary jaw having a notch for receiving said lug.
6. The combination of claim 1 wherein said last mentioned means includes a spring urged pressure plate.
'7. The combination of claim 1 wherein said last mentioned means includes a contact member pivotally mounted between said side members and interposed between said stationary jaw and said-movable jaw.
8'. The combination of claim 1 wherein said last mentioned means includes an angulated member pivotally mounted between said side members and interposed between said stationary jaw and said movable jaw, and resilient means normally retaining one end of said angulated member against the inner face of the cutter of said stationary jaw.
9. The combination of claim 8 wherein one end of said angulated member bears against the inner face of the cutter of said movable jaw as said jaws are clamped together. I
10. A nail clipper comprising a pair of jaws including a fixed jaw and a movable jaw, side members carried by said fixed jaw, a pivotal lever carried by said side members, said movable jaw having a recess therein, and a slidable member carried by said lever and received in said recess for retaining said lever inclined relative to said movable jaw.
