4 Claims.
This invention relates to manicuring implements and has reference in particular to what is believed to be a new style fingernail clipper, that is, one embodying a depository for convenient accumulation and trapping of the clippins.
This application is a continuation in part of an application filed by me on August 26, 1937, Serial There are certain. known fingernail clippers characterized by a complemental spring separated and lever actuated clipping or cutting element. The present invention is characterized by a somewhat corresponding coordination of parts but has associated therewith unique cam coacting pressure means as well as an appropriately arranged and aptly designed receptacle constitutthe depository.
More specifically stated, I have evolved and produced a nail clipper of the aforementioned general. type embodying a main channel shaped member forming the receptacle, a resilient cover member cooperable therewith, and a special adaptation of slotted flanges to accommodate the iulcruming and cam elements on the operating lever.
Other features and advantages will become more readily apparent from the following description and the accommpanying illustrative drawings.
In the drawings, wherein like numerals are employed to designate corresponding mechanical details throughout the views:
Figure l is a top plan view of the novel nail clipper as constructed in accordance with the structural principles of the present invention.
Figure 2 is a central longitudinal sectional View taken approximately on the plane of the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a View similar to Figure 2 showing how the cam coacting means comes into play to provide the necessary leverage to operate the resilient clipping member.
Figure 4 is a top plan view exposing the receptacle, the resilient cover plate or companion part thereof being broken away for clearance of illustration.
Figure 5 is a side View of that portion of the construction seen in Figure 4.
Figure 6 is a top plan view of the so-called resilient cover plate.
Figure 7 is a top plan view of the operating lever.
Figure 8 is an edge view of the same.
Referring now to the drawings by distinguishing reference numerals, it will be observed that the numeral 9 designates the clipper unit, this part being of metal of proper texture and com position strength. The channel shaped portion includes spaced parallel side walls ill and an intervening web ll the web being longitudinally shaped to cooperate with the side walls in providing a depository for the nail clippings. The outer or left-hand end of this part H is formulated into the usual arcuate or segmental nipper or cutter 22. The side walls id adjacent to the cutter l2 are provided with extensions which may be conveniently called adapter flanges i3. These flanges are provided with duplicate horizontally elongated slots Hi to accommodate the retention and fulcruming lugs E5 on the operating lever it. It will be observed in Figure 5 in particular, that the upper edges of the respective slots are provided with selectively usable notches or seats ii and it. That section of the unit 9 identified by numeral 2 9 forms the aforementioned cover plate and is of a length corresponding to the receptacle and is integrally connected at one end as at 26 to the corresponding end of the receptacle. The construction at 2% is such as to provide the desired spring hinge connection, the resiliency being such as to normally press or swing the part i9 away from the receptacle. Thus the part 15% becomes a relatively movable cutter and it is provided on its outer end with a nipper 2i corresponding to the aforementioned nipper 52. At the point 22 the movable cutter is is provided with an aperture which constitutes a convenient means for dumping the deposited clippings whenever necessary or desired. It will be further noted that this part i9 is provided with a somewhat pyramidal riser or button 23. This constitutes a depressing or thrust element and is located for coaction with the slot M and companion portion of the lever It.
In connection with the lever it will be observed that the extreme outer end is directed laterally as at 2 1 in respect to the retention and pivoting lugs 15. Then on the opposite side of the lugs said lever is fashioned as at 25 to provide a thrust rib or cam for cooperation with the complemental cam or thrust element 23.
Under this arrangement the lever may be shifted to its off and on positions. For example, in Figure 2 we see the lever in its collapsed or folded position to facilitate carrying the device in ones pocket. At this time the lugs l5 engage in the seats l8 and the detent 2t rests upon the button 23. The inherent resiliency of the spring cover plate it exerts pressure on the detent whereby to maintain the lever in this out-of-theway collapsed position. This, incidentally, is one outstanding feature of the invention.
It is also observable that by shifting the lugs from the seats is into the outer or front seats H, the lever may be swung to an open operable position for depressing the spring plate l9. When in the latter position, as illustrated in Figure 3, the cam element or rib 25 comes into engagement with the thrust button 23 to provide the desired pressure for actuating the nippers l2 and 2! in a well-known manner. In order to move the lever it from its rear position shown in Figure 2 to its forward position said lever I6 is slightly raised so as to slightly depress the member l9 and then the lever is moved forwardly so as to move the trunnions i5 from out of the seats l8 into the seats [1.
The disclosure of the invention thus made comprehends the preferred embodiment of the inventive concept. I desire to emphasize, however, in a construction of this major it is desirable of visualizing the features separately and collective-- ly to appreciate their companion coordination, each sharing its proportionate part in the contribution to a unitary implement possessed of the advantages indicated.
It is thought that the description taken in connection with the drawings will enable a clear understanding of the invention to be had. Therefore, a more lengthy description is thought unnecessary.
While the preferred embodiment of the invention has been shown and described, it is to be understood that minor changes coming within the field of invention claimed may be resorted to if desired.
I claim:

In a nail clipper of the class described, a stationary jaw provided with a nipper, a relatively movable resiliently operable companion jaw having a nipper opposed to said first named nipper, the stationary jaw being provided with spaced parallel flanges having elongated slots, said slots having selectively usable keeper seats formed therein, a lever having lugs slidable in said slots and selectively disposable in said seats, said lever having a cam member for coacation with the adjacent jaw as well as a detent, said detent constituting means for maintaining the lever in compact folded relation.
