The present invention has to do with the art of cutting, filing, scraping and manicuring. More particularly the invention pertains to improvements in a miniature tool adapted to be carried about the person and characterized in that a casing, constituted by closely spaced discs between which are sustained several cutting, filing and scraping members, comprises outer, smooth and uninterrupted surfaces which may be suitably and conveniently embellished to enhance the appearance of the tool. .Various methods have been devised heretofore for securing the discs of the casing between which the aforementioned members are swingably supported by the aid of rivets or the like. 1f secured by rivets or other fastening members the -outside surfaces of the casing were broken and this vitally harmed the appearance of the tool. According to the invention, the method contemplated resides in providing the complements or discs of the casing with depending'elements extending transversely thereof, which elements may be suitably interlocked or fastened for holding the complements the desired distance apart and without affecting or vitally harming the outer surfaces of the complements.
The invention accordingly comprises, features of construction, combination of elements and arrangements of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter set forth and the scope of the application thereof will be indicated in the appended claims.
For a clearer understanding of the invention attention is directed to the' embodiments shown in the accompanying drawing in Which:-

According to the inventiony the tool comprises a casing, generally denoted l0, which is constituted by closely spaced discs or components 11 and 12. In the form shown in Fig. 2, disc 11 includes the diametrically arranged integral depending lugs 13 and 14. As shown, these lugs are preferably of an inverted T shape. In the form according to Figs. 6' and 'l disc 11 is also 60 provided with diametrically disposed integral depending lugs 15 and 15. The outer faces of lugs 13 and 14 are preferably formed as to be flush with the peripheral face of its disc. Similarly the depending lugs 15 and 16 have their outer 65 faces flush with the end face of its disc. In both of the embodiments 2 and 6, the upper and lower faces of disc 11 are smooth and uninterrupted.
In the form illustrated in Fig. 2, the other disc or component 12 of the casing includes 70 means for interlocking with the opposed depending 'F shaped lugs of the companion disc 1l. To this end diametrically arranged clevis members each broadly denoted 17 are preferably cast integral with or otherwise formed on disc 12.
Each clevis member comprises a pair of upstanding and spaced channels 18 and 19 which are interconnected by a common intermediate arm 20 and each clevis member is arranged as to have its end face flush with peripheral face of disc 12. Each of the channels is also provided with an overhanging upper portion 21. The opposed channel members of a clevis form an inverted T shaped slot adapted to snugly receive and interlock with corresponding T shaped lugs of the companion disc.
The upper and lower faces of disc 12 are also smooth and uninterrupted and its upstanding channel members have their outside faces flush with peripheral face of its disc.
Preparatory to attaching the spaced discs of the casing of the character alluded to, a blade carrying plate is anchored to one of the complements. For purposes of description, it is assumed that the blade carrying plate, generally indicated 22, is first mounted 'on the lower disc 12. This plate is in the form of a relatively thin disc having the diametrically disposed recess or cut away portions 23 and 24, the walls of which being adapted to embrace the side, and rear faces of an adjacent clevis in order to centre the plate in suchmanner that the circumferential face of the component 12 is flush with the peripheral face of theanchoring plate 22 and further to prevent the displacement of the blade carrying plate with respect to the disc 12 when the walls ofthegecess 23 and 24 straddle the-spaced channel meliibers of v a clevis.

the striations Vbeing so arranged that .a pair thereof is on each side of an imaginary line connecting the origins of the cylindrical posts 29 and 30 which are preferably cast integral with plate 22. Thus a spring like element or Vfinger 31 is formed between st- riations 25 and 26 and between the striations 27 and 28. Each finger has afree offset integral terminal 32 spaced from the body of blade carrying disc 22, each terminal being also slightly bent out of alinement with longitudinal axis of a respective spring finger and constituting a yieldable lseat for the cam portion 33 of the perforated ears 34 of the swingable ling and cutting members 35 and 36. As illustrated, the perforated ear 34 of the filing and Vscraping blade 36 is swingably mounted on the cylindrical post 30 and the perforated ear 34 of the cutting end scraping blade 35 is hingedly mounted on the circular post 29.
Blade 35 is provided with a front scraping end 36', a cutting edge 37, a protuberance 38, a rear rectilinear face 39 and the arcuate face 40.
Swingable blade 36 is in all respects similar to the cutting blade 35 except that it contains roughened faces as 41 and a dull edge 42.
The free offset terminals 32'of the spring fingers cooperate with the cam faces of an adjacent blade to maintain and hold the latter in an open position as illust-rated in Fig. 4, or in a closed position as shown in Fig. 3 or in an intermediate position between their open and y closed positions. In the open position of a blade,
- of the blade carrier 22, but its projection as 38 ,'just slightly extends beyond the curved sides of the casing, (see Fig. 3), the projections 38 forming means which may -be easily and quickly actuated by a finger nail of the operator in swinging a blade for use beyond the casing.
When a blade is folded or within the casing its scraping end as 36' rests on a channel member as 18 of opposing or remote clevis, the channel in this instance serving as a stop. In such position the projection 38 of its blade is just be'- yond the limits of the casing. In other words, in the open position of a blade, a channel of an adjacent clevis serves as its stop and in the closed position of a blade, a channel of an opposing clevis forms a stop therefor, and a blade is securely held in any of these positions by an offset yieldable and free spring terminal interposed between its respective ear and an adjacent clevis.
With the blade carrying plate 22 anchored to the disc 12 as hereinbefore set forth, the casing may be closed and this is accomplished by placing disc 11 over plate 22 in such manner that its T shaped lugs may be arranged to slide into the corresponding T shaped slots formed by the spaced channels of a clevis. `To this end, disc 11 is arranged above the plate 22 and. slightly tilted so that a lug 13 enters rst into a respective slot of a clevis of the companion disc. Subsequently the other lug 14 is snapped into the other corresponding slotof its associated clevis. `Arranged in this fashion the depending lugs of the top disc 11 interlock with the channel members of the lower disc and to prevent the lugs from being disengaged, the channel members of a clevis may be slightly pressed towards each other to more securely embrace the restricted portion of the T shaped lug of the companion complement. For purposes of the present disclosure the upstanding channel members as 18 and 19 may be also considered as lugs and limitations such as depending and upstanding may be used interchangeably.
When assembled, the tool takes the form of a coin, (see Fig.1)k and comprises smooth outside surfaces which may be made more attractive in enhancing their appearance by engraving thereon suitable and pleasing designs in variegated color combinations.
In the form 'illustrated in Figs. 6 and 7 the discs 11 and l2 forming the casing also have smooth and uninterrupted outer faces and one of the discs, say 12 is provided with a spring anchoring device comprising a series of posts 50, 51 and 52. The end posts 50 and 52 are in alinement and the intermediate post 51 is slightly out of alinement with respect to the imaginary line connecting the origins of posts 50 and 52.` These posts are also cast integral with the disc 12. The purposes of these posts is to anchor and hold a crimped or offset portion 53 of a spring generally denoted 54 to or against. the inner face of disc 12.
Spring 54 embodies laterally disposed arms as 55 which have their free portions cooperating with the cam faces 56 of ears 57 to hold its blade in either closed, open or in an intermediate position, the ears being suitably perforated and are pivotally mounted o'n posts as 58, the cutting and ling blades in Fig. 6 being of the types hereinbefore disclosed in connection with Fig. 2.
Preferably cast integral with the disc 12 are the spaced upstanding lugs 59 and 60. These lugs are also slightly spaced from the circumferential edge of its disc 12 as to form a shoulder. The depending lugs 15 and ,16 of theupper disc 1l cooperate respectively with th upstanding lugs .59 and 60 of the lower disc 12 as to form spaced transversely disposed intramarginal blocks through each of which there is positioned a rivet, or pin 61 which has been properly upset as is well understood for holding the meeting faces of the cooperating lugs of a block together and further prevent displacement of one disc with respect to the other, the lugs 15 and 16 being so designed as to seat in the shoulder formed by an adjacent lug of the opposing disc and the inner 'face thereof that is the lugs 59 and 60 being of .height to contact the inner face of the opposing disc 11 and accordingly forming a seat therefor, the height of a block being just slightly wider than the thickness of the swingable filing and cutting blades, as to prevent their transverse displacement play or rattling thereof and further to provide a compact construction.
As illustrated, the cutting blade in Fig. 6 is closed and has its scraping end seated on the block formed by the lugs 16 and 60 and this position is maintained by the aid of the opposing free terminal 55 of the spring on which the ear of this blade is seated. In other words, due to the action of spring 54, a blade, if closed, will be held closed unless swung upon by the -operator and in the closed position of a blade the protuberance 38 just barely overhangs the circumferential edges of the spaced discs.
If a blade be in an open position, its rear rectilinear face 64 is held against the outside lugs as 16 of a block by the action of a free but aathe size of a quarter of a dollar, and which coin may be conveniently carried about by the person as it occupies a relatively small space either in a mans pocket or in a ladys hand bag and moreover may be advantageously utilized for either cutting, filing, scraping or manicuring.
While I have described my invention in detail and have referred to specific applications thereof, I do not intend that the invention herein disclosed shall be limited to such details or to such specific applications but intend that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
I claim:
1. A device of the character described comprising spaced discs, swingable means mounted between the discs for cutting, ling or scraping, each ot the discs having depending spaced lugs extending towards an opposing disc, and means for securing corresponding lugs of said discs together. p
2. A device o! the character described comprising 'spaced discs, swingable means mounted between the discs for tiling, cutting or scraping, the discs having transversely disposed members, means for securing corresponding members of said discs together, the swingable means comprising an arcuate face having a projection, the face being flush with the sides of said discs and the projection extending slightly beyond said sides in the closed position of said swingable means.
3. A device o1' the character described comprising spaced components, blade means mounted between said components for filing, cutting or scraping, the components having depending members, means for securing overlapping parts of said members together, each of the blade means having an arcuate face and a projection, the arcuate face of each blade means being flush ,with the sides of said components and the projection oi' each blade means extending slightly beyond the sides of the components in the inoperative position of the blade means.
4. A device of the character described comprising a casing having spaced discs, spaced lugs depending from one of the discs, spaced clevis means carried by the other disc, each of said clevis means.
having overhanging members for interlocking with one of said lugs and blade means swingably mounted in said casing.
5. A device oi' the character described comprising a casing having spaced discs, diametrically disposed lugs depending from one of said discs, means mounted on the other disc comprising openings having sides for interlocking with said lugs, a plate mounted on one of said discs, and blade means swingably mounted yon said plate.
6. A device of the character described, a casing comprising spaced walls each having spaced lugs, the lugs of one oi! said walls being inverted T shape, the lugs of another wall comprising inverted T shaped slots for interlocking with said lugs and blade means swingably carried by the casing.
'7. A device of the character described comprising a casing having spaced walls, a plate mounted on one of said walls and in juxtaposition therewith, said plate having struck out resilient ngers, blade means swingably disposed on said plate and cooperating with said fingers, and means extending transversely of the casing and depending from said walls to prevent relative displacement of the latter.
8. A device of the character described, a casing having closely spaced walls, a plate mounted on one of the walls and in juxtaposition therewith, the plate including struck out resilient fingers each having offset free terminals, blade means swingably mounted on said plate and cooperating with said terminals, and means extending transversely of the casing and towards each other to prevent displacement of said walls with respect to each other.
9. A device of the character described comprising a casing having opposed walls, one of which includes a plurality of spaced pins, a spring having an intermediate crimped portion secured to one of the walls by said pins, the spring having laterally extending arms, a post adjacent each free portion of said arms and extending from the last mentioned wall, and spaced lugs depending from the latter, the other wall having spaced lugs disposed in juxtaposition with respect to corresponding lugs of the opposing wall, means for securing corresponding lugs of both walls, and blade means' mounted on a post and seated o n a terminal of one o1' said springs.
10. A device of the character described comprising a casing having opposed walls, one of which includes a plurality of spaced members defining an irregular channel, a spring having an intermediate oiset portion secured in said channel, blade means pivotally mounted in said casing and seated on a terminal of said spring, one wall having depending lugs, the opposing wall being provided with transversely disposed elements disposed in juxtaposition with respect to said lugs, and means for securing an adjacent lug and element to prevent relative displacement ot said 11n walls.
11. A device of the character described comprising a casing having opposed discs, one of which includes a plurality of spaced pins dening an irregular channel, a spring having an intermediate oiset crimped portion secured by said pins in said channel, blade means pivotally mounted in said casing and cooperating with the terminals of the spring, the opposed discs each having depending lugs, corresponding lugs of said discs being disposed side by side and means for securing corresponding lugs together.
12. A device of the character described comprising a casing having opposed walls, blade means pivotally mounted in the casing, diametrically disposed blocks common to'said walls, each block comprising juxtaposed lugs depending from said walls, and means to secure juxtaposed lugs to prevent relative displacement of said walls.
13. A device of the character described comprising a casing having opposed walls, a spring intermediate said Walls, blade means pivotally mounted in the casing and seated 'on the terminal portion of said spring, blocks for spacing said walls and common to the latter, each block comprising juxtaposed lugs depending from said walls and means to secure juxtaposed lugs to prevent relative displacement of said walls.

A device of the character described comprising a casing having opposed discs, one of 140 which includes a plurality of spaced pins defining an irregular channel, a spring having a crimped portion secured in said channel, said spring having laterally disposed arms, the last mentioned disc being provided with depend-ing lugs spaced from the circumferentialI edge thereof, a post adjacent each lug, blade means pivotally mounted on a post and normally abutting a free portion of said spring, the opposing disc having diametrically disposed lugs with their outer faces l pins, said series defining flush with the circumferential face of its disc and inner faces disposed in juxtaposition with the outer faces of corresponding lugs ofthe opposing disc, means to secure corresponding lugs of opposing discs together, said blade means having an arcuate face adapted to be flush with the circumferential face of said discs in the closed position of said swingable means. the blade means -being further provided with a protuberanc'e slightly projecting beyond the limits of the discs in the closed position of its blade means.
15, A coin shaped implement of the character described comprising a casing having opposed closely spaced discs, one of which includes a se` ries of spaced pins, the outer pins of the series being in alinement, a common intermediate pin of the series being out ofalinement with the outer a tortuous path. a spring having a crimped offset portion, said crimped portion being secured in said tortuous path, the spring comprising laterally extending arms projecting within close proximity to the characterized in that the blade means includes a rear face cooperating with an adjacent lug with respect to its fulcrum to limit the outward movement thereof.
17. The implement according to claim 15 further characterized in that the swingable blade means embodies a scraping portion which cooperates with a remotely disposed lug with respect to its fulcrum to limit the inward movement of the blade means.
