BEACH BAG Robert A. Jones, Los Angeles, Calif.
Application March 12,1948, Serial No. 14,509
9 Claims. 1
Q My invention relates to hand bags, and more particularly to that type of hand bag which is known as a beach bag and which is adapted to carry bathing suits and like garments worn at a beach, together with bathing accessories, to and froma bathing beach. Such bags are well known and generally include at least a waterproof lining, whereby the wet towels and bathing suits are securely enclosed and the dress garments of Obviously, such hand bags may be used for other purposes than carrying of bathing gear, but are "invention is to provide an improved beach bag.
A furtherv object of the invention is to provide .an improved beach bag which comprises a plurality of sections adapted to be detachably connected together by waterproof joints.
A further object is to provide an improved beach bag such as that last described which,
when assembled, and emptied of the articles carried therein, provides a hollow waterproof receptacle which may be used as a float.
A further object is to provide an improved beach bag such as that last described, wherein "a pair of end sections are detachably connected to a body section, and which end sections are adapted to be detachably connected together apart from the body section to provide an auxiliary hollow container of waterproof construction.
A further object is to provide an improved beach bag of hollow waterproof construction and which includes novel means for detachably connecting a carrying handle thereto.
A further object is to provide a novel combination of beach bag, float and beach ball.
Other objects and advantages reside in the particular structure of the invention, combination and arrangement of the several parts thereof, and will be readily understood by those skilled I in the art upon reference to the attached draw- Figure 5 is an elevation with parts'broke'n away and shown in longitudinal vertical section and showing one use of the invention.
Referring specifically to the drawings, wherein like reference characters have been used throughout the several views to designate like parts, the beach bag according to the invention is'of prolate form and comprises a body section ll which is of hollow tubular construction and which may be made of any suitable rigid, semi-rigid, or'flexible material of a waterproof nature. One surface of the body section [0 is formed with a pair of longitudinally-spaced, oppositely undercut recesses II which provide seats for the free ends of the legs l2 of a carrying handle I3. As is readily apparent from Figure 3, the legslz of the carrying handle are loaded for resilient movement in opposite directions away from each-other, whereby the toes l4 thereof are resiliently seated in the undercuts of the recesses l I. At the same time, inward pressure in opposite directions on the legs I2 move them toward each other a distance sufiicient to permit the toes I4 to clear the undercut parts of the recesses, whereby the carrying handle l3 may be readily detached from the body section In. To provide a relatively smooth outer surface on the body section III, it is preferred that the recesses H be formed in thickened portions defined by the inwardly-directed bosses l5 which extend into the interior of the body section In. Likewise, the opposite ends of the body section III may be'provided with inwardlydirected annular bosses [6, the free ends of which may extend axially outwardly of the ends of the body section, as indicated at I! and [8, to provide flanges. It will be noted that the left-hand flange, Figure 3, is inset from the outer surface of the body section [0 and is formed with an exterior screw-thread. On the contrary, the flange [8 at the right-hand end of the body section provides a continuation of closure caps 20 and 2|, respectively. Each of the end sections is preferably formed with a pair of spaced recesses 22 providing finger grips. The left-hand end section or cap 20 is provided with an interior screw-thread complementary to the thread of the flange l1, while the right-hand end cap 2| is provided with an inset flange 23, the exterior of which is screw-threaded to be complementary to the threads of the flange I8 of the body section. The right-hand end cap 2| has detachably secured on the exterior of the flange 23 thereof a sealing gasket 24. Such gasket 24 cooperates with the gasket l9 carried by the end-i flange of the body section to provide a pairo'f waterproof jointswhen the end sections 20 and 2| are threadedly connected to the body section I0. 22 in each of the end sections 20 and 2i are useful in screwing the end sections tightly'onto the body section, whereby to formthe waterproof joint aforesaid. a
In view of the fact thtthe"scre\v'=threads of the end sections 20 and 2| are complementary to the threads of the'body section which are in turn complementary-to each other, it follows that the screw-threads of the end sectionsmust-be com-' plementary-to-pach other, wher eby -topermit- =---themto-be-deta'chab1yconnected together apart -from thebody section to provide the beach ball -illustrated in'Figure 5. one of -the sealing J3 =----g-askets--24 is carried by the end section 2 I, such e y -beach bal1 is waterproof when the two 'sections Yr 20 and- 2i are threadedly connectedl When used --=--venient means for handling theba-ll and like- -wise provide -convenient grips for screwing the sections together and apart a When the clevice is used as afloat, the handle l3 'may befletached and-positionedinside the 1 float, as illustrated in-brokenline's, Figure 3.
-'It=follows from-theforegoing that the device 7 Y according to the -invention is of-' a: convenient "the -precise structure-shown anddescribed herei inabove exceptas -hereinafterclaimed.
ll -I claim: 1 1. A beach bag, comprising body of Waterproof material, saidbody being open thread complementary to"on'e"of sai'd'threads of said rings' and adapted to provide a threaded joint 'tlier ewith; "whereby %'to: provide a 'prolate -hollow=' contai1ier----when= said end sectiohs are threaded onto'sa'id rings-, means 'i'or sealing said joints; saidbodybeing f'ormed to'provide a pair "of longitudinally-spacedundercut recessesthereachably; seated in The finger grip-providing recesses *saine 'is susceptible of other-forms and expres -"SiOI1S'.* Gonsequently -d do not-*limit myself to-- a hollow cylindrical a each end,"eachend of"sai'd 'body including a substantially"rigid ring; one ring" being formed 'wi-th "-a'n' 'exterior screw-thread; th'e' o'ther ring" being formed with' a: complementary "interior screw thread,-'a pair "of "h'ollow' semi-spherical 'end se'ctions eachibeingfoi med with' a 'screwhollow cylinbeing formed with complementary interior screwthreads, a semi-spherical end section threaded on each end of said body section, sealing gaskets interposed between said body section and said end sections to provide waterproof joints, a carrying handle, and means detachably connecting said handle to said body section.
