HANDLE FOR TINWARE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 251,526, dated December 27, 1881.
Application filed July 21, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, M. GEORGE CoMBs, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Shellsburg, in the county of Benton and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Handles for Tinware; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked therson, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in handles for sheet-metal ware--such as washboilersand will first be described, and then designated in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the handle. Fig. 2 is a side view of apart of the handle, the grasping part being shown in longitudinal section. Fig. 3 shows the blank from which the sheetmetal bracket of the handle is formed. Fig. 4 is a side view of the end of a wash-boiler with the handle attached. Fig. 5 is a top view of t the same thing shown in Fig. 4.
The letter A designates the grasping part of the handle, and is made of wood,because that material is a poor conductor of heat, and is provided with a bore, 1), or hole extending through its length. A suitable-sized wire, 0, extends straight through thebore of the grasping part, and at each end thereof the wire is bent at a right angleyo, and thence extends straight, as shown at 0 Thus constructed,the woodgrasping part will turn freely on the straight part of the wire. Two sheet-metal brackets, E, are provided, one of which is rigidly secured to each of the straight ends 0 of the wire. Each bracket is made from a 7 blank of sheet metal, having the form shown in Fig. 3. The top edge, e, isturned over, as shown in Fig. 1, to stiffen it. The front edge,
f, is rolled to form a tube, which wraps around away part 1 at the lower extremity of the tubular edge. This arrangement serves to prevent the end 0 of the wire from drawing out of the tube. The wire is, however, secured to its position within the tube of the bracket with great permanency and rigidity by being soldered along the entire rear open edge of the tube. The rear edge, h, of the blank is bent outward to form a flange on the bracket, by which it is secured in any suitable manner to the wash-boiler or other vessel. In the presentinstance the flange is provided with holes 6, through which rivets may be inserted and made fast to the vessel.
A handle of this construction may be manufactured and sold as an article complete in itself, and ready to be attached to vessels for which it is adapted, such as wash-boilers, milk-cans, large-sized pans, 850. It possesses the advantages that it will neither out nor burn the hand and from the fact that the grasping part will turn freely it is very easy on the hand when lifting a vessel from a high to a low position, or vice versa, because there is no friction on the hand, such as is occasioned when the grasping part is immovable, whereby the hand is required to slip over it.
