INNES THORNTON MOINTYRE, OF OARROLLTON, MISSISSIPPI.
WHIFFLETREE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 409,057, dated August 13, 1889.
Application filed May 11. 1889. Serial No. 310.381. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, INN ES THORNTON MOIN- TYRE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oarrollton, in the county of Carroll and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vhifiietrees; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvementin whiffletrees; and it consists in the peculiar arrangement and construction of the parts of the same, that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
The object of my invention is to provide a strong, light, and cheap whiffietree, which is made from a single rod of metal, and all the parts of which are therefore necessarily integral. H
The accompanying drawing is aperspective view of a whiffietree embodying my improvements.
In the construction of my improved whiffletree I employ a metallic rod of suitable length and diameter, which is doubled at the point C to form an eye at one end of the whiffletree. The portion a, which is straight and forms the front side of the whiffietree, is bent at its center to form a rearward-extending looped brace A, the lapped portions B on the front side of the said looped brace being flattened and welded together and flush and in line with the portion a, so as to preserve a straight unbroken line on the front side of the whifiletree.
The portion D of the rod beyond the eye 0 forms the rear side of the whiffietree, is bowed, as shown, and has its central portion welded to the rear side of the looped brace.
The extremities of the portion D are welded to the rear side of the front portion a at the ends thereof, as at E, and an eye F is formed between the ends of the portions (H7 at the opposite end of the whiflietree from the eye O. The rearward extending looped brace A and the bowed rear portion D form a truss, which is integral wit-h the whiffletree and serves to strengthen the same and render it exceedingly serviceable and durable. Trace-hooks G are attached to the eyes 0 F at the ends of the whiffletree.
A whiffletree thus constructed is very cheap and simple, is exceedingly light and strong, and will be found of great utility.
Having thus described my invention, I claim-- A whiffletree formed of a single rod of metal bent to form the front side a and the rear bowed portion D, the said portion a being bent at its center to form the rearwardextendinglooped brace A, the lapped portions B of which are flattened and welded together and in line with the front side of the Whiffletree, and the ends of the portion D being welded to the rear sides of the ends of the front side a, eyes C F being formed at the ends of the whiffletree, and the center of the bowed portion D being welded to the rear side of the looped brace A, whereby a truss is formed on the rear side of the whiffietree and integral therewith, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
INNES THORNTON MCINTYRE.
