Description

CLOTHESPIN Filed Jan. 30, 1948 Jzs Aniazzz'a fiaraa I EN TOR;
A TTORNE Y1 Patented July 11, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Application January 30, 1948, Serial No. 5,350 In Mexico February 18, 1947 2 Claims.
This invention relates to clothes pins.
The prime object of the invention is to provide a clothes pin having two clamping members pivoted together by a coiled spring and an inter- .posed disk, the spring normally clamping the members together and the disk holding the two members from sidewise movement.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the clothes pin.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the same.
Figure 3 is a top plan view.
Figure 4 is a top plan view of the spring and disk.
As shown in the accompanying drawing, the clothespin comprises two similar members In and II which are placed in inverted position with regard to each other, said members making up the body of the clothespin with the fastening ends 12 and spacing ends l3. Each of the spacing ends I3 of the members In and II making up the clothespin is considerably tapered, as may more easily be appreciated from the showing in Figure 2 of the drawing, to keep them apart from each other, so that on being pressed together, the opposite ends l2which fasten the clothes or articles to which the pin is applied-may open or separate from each other. These same ends 13 are provided with respective longitudinal grooves or cuts I4 starting approximately from the centers of the members l and I I and terminating at the outer free ends thereof.
These same members In and II have, on their inner face or surface, transverse grooves l5 and I6 that are common to this type of devices to support the pin on the clothesline, etc. When the clothespin members are assembled, the disk 11, previously mounted on the spring I8 is placed in the grooves [4, formed in the members In and H as stated above; to which purpose the disk is provided with a central hole, which is partially visible in Figs. 1 and 2.
The spring I8 has its ends extended so as to form the lever arms I9, the bent ends of which are inserted into transverse grooves 20 formed in the outer face of each of the members In and H making up the body of the clothespin, so as to cause said spring to keep its place and to exercise the right pressure on said members.
As will be understood, the disk I! forces the members l0 and II into perfect alignment, thus avoiding excessive lateral play between the two members, which might cause the latter to become separated.
Having thus described the invention, what I consider as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A clothespin comprising two members, each member formed with a longitudinal slot, each member having a transverse groove formed on its inner face, a coil spring seated in the transverse grooves forming a pivot for the two members, and a disc mounted on the coil spring and fitting in the slots formed in the members, one end of the coil spring being extended and bent to fit in a groove formed in the outer surface of one of the members, and the opposite end of the coil spring being extended and bent to fit in a groove formed in the outer surface of the other member.
2. A clothespin comprising two members, a spring including a coiled portion seated in grooves formed on the inner faces of the two members, one end of the spring extending from the coil and bent at right angles to overlie the outer surface of one member, the opposite end of the spring extending from the coil and bent at right angles and opposite the direction of the firstmentioned bent end and overlying the surface of the opposite member, and a disc mounted on the coiled portion of the spring and fitting in slots formed in the two members.
