MECHANICAL WALLPAPER FASTER Filed' June 12, 1947' 3 Sheets-Sheet 3 ries IZA/@Jam ATI'CI RN EYS Patented July l, I1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE MECHANICAL WALLPAPER PAs'rER Charles W. Hesson, Louisville, Ky. Application Jane 12, 1947, serial No. '154,239 ls claims. (ci. en -14) This invention relates to a mechanical wall paper pasting machine. n
It, is an object of the present invention to provide a Wall paper pasting machine adapted to support a roll of wall paper and to directthe 'same through a paste compartment'and over a lroller adapted to pick up paste and deposit it on the under side of the wall paper as it is pulled thereover and wherein while the paper is being extended, cutting the sides of the paper to the exact connection to trim it.
Itis'another object of the present invention to provide in a wall paper pasting machine, in addition to the roller arrangement for applying paste to the wall paper sheet, additional roll means within the same compartment adapted to be used for depositing paste upon the border strip which may be extended' therethrough.
It is another object of the present invention to provide in a wall paper pasting machine, a paste roll which has a rubber sleeve surface adaptedto pick up paste and adapted to be elongated so that the ends of the roll can be extended by stretching the rubber sleeve to adapt the machine for different Width Wall paper and wherein the cutting knives may likewise be adjusted to trim the dierent width wall paper sheets.
Other objects of the present invention are to provide a wall paper pasting machine which is of simple construction, inexpensive to manufacture and eiicient in operation.
For other objects and for a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed construction taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of my wall paper pasting machine.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary and sectional View taken through the cutting knife device.
Fig. 3 is an end sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a side elevational View of my Wall paper pasting machine With the paper extended through it.
Fig. 5 is a transverse cross-sectional view taken on line 5-5 of Fig. l.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary cross-sectional View taken on line 6 6 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 7 is a fragmentary cross-sectional view taken through one end of the paste vapplying roller and as viewed on line 1-1 of Fig. 5.
Fig. 8 is a fragmentary top plan view looking upon the top roller.
Referring now to the figures, I5 represents a tank having paste I6 therewithin. This tank is supported above a door by adjustable legs I1 disposed at opposite sides and ends of the tank. One set of legs supports a wall paper roll I8 from which paper is drawn and extended over the front `corner of the tank as indicated at I9 and through rolls 29 and 2| having cutting discs 22 and 23 uniting to trim the sides of the paper. Within the tank is a large roll 24 adapted to pick up paste I6 to deposit the same upon the underside of the paper as it is extended over the roll and between the roll 24 and a small roll 25. From the small roll 25, the paper is drawn over a top plate 26 which is pivoted at 21 so that it may be tilted upwardly as shown in Fig. 5 to provide access to the end of the plate 26 so that the paper can be severed therefrom conveniently. The edge of the plate 26 is indicated at 21 and the paper can be severed along this edge. The paper can be extended over a table top 28 prior to being placed upon the Wall. Trim 29 from the cutting knives 22 and 23 will drop to the oor.
Roll I8 of the wall paper is supported on a shaft 3l and is retained against axial displacement thereon by set collars 32. The ends of the shafts are placed in brackets 33 on the legs I1.
Legs I1 are adjustable through brackets 34 on the sides of the tank I5 and are retained in their adjusted position by a set screw 35.
On the side of the tank I5 is a measuring device 36 which is operated by engagement of a pinion wheel 31 engaging with the paste applying roller 24. Measured quantities of the paper can accordingly be rolled off.
The paste applying drum 24 is formed of cupshaped members 38 at the opposite ends of the same and a rubber exterior sleeve 39 connected to the members by clamping plates 4I on the end faces of the members 38. The end members are secured at their centers to an adjustable fitting 42, Fig. '1, threadedly connected to screw 43 and adjustable thereover to bring the cup-shaped members either closer together or farther apart whereby to stretch the rubber sleeve 39 as in the latter case to provide a longer paste roll 24. lock nuts 44 can be adjusted to x the fitting 42 in its adjusted position. The rubber sleeve 39 will provide a good surface on which the paste may be collected for deposit on the paper.
The tank I5 is of sufficient width to accommodate a second paste applying roll 45 over which border paper is extended. A top roll 43 engages with the paper to retain it upon the paste-applying roll 45. The tank has a partition 41 for supporting the inner ends of these rolls,
3` as well as the inner ends of the rolls 24 and 25. The border paper can be placed on the shaft 3| in the same manner that the roll I8 is placed thereon and to one side of the roll I8.
The rotating knife 23 is adjustable upon a threaded shaft 48 and the rotating knife 22 will be pressed toward the knife 23 by a spring 49 reacting between the knife 22 and the end of the roll 30. Knife 22 is on a square shaft 5l. The shafts 48' and 5l are supported on a bracket 52 which is connected to the front of the tank l5.
The shafts are connected together to drive one another by meshed gears 53 and 54. A bracket 55 extends upwardly from the shaft 48 to support the plate 26. The brackets 55 willv pivot on the shaft 48 so that the plate 26 can be pivoted upwardly as shown in Fig. 5.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claims.
I claim:
